Hanging Book Rack: Hang ‘Em and Read ‘Em

Bookworms will be pleased to know that there’s another way to store and display books aside from shelves. In addition to furniture that incorporates space where you can arrange your books (like the Sunflower Chair), there are installations like the Hanging Book Rack that lets you do it with more flair.

As the name indicates, it’s a book rack in the unconventional sense because it doesn’t have shelves where you’re supposed to arrange your books. Instead, it looks like a coat rack, with its wooden plates and all. At the bottom of these plates are waxed cotton strings that hold the books in place, and they function as a bookmark, at the same time, too.

To account for varying book thickness, the wooden plates can be moved from left to right to make sure everything fits. The Hanging Book rack can fit up to twelve books, and that should be more than enough for your Book of the Month reads.

The Hanging Book Rack is available online for $210(USD) from OldandCold’s Etsy shop. A mini version that can fit six books is available for $110.

Multifunctional and Minimalist Coat Rack

The unique construction of this minimal coat rack appears to defy gravity with its hovering steel sheet and three free-standing poles. Focusing on our human habits, the design is centered around four common objects: keys, books, coat, and shoes. Within the compact structure, you’ll find a place for each with room to spare for other everyday accessories. Classic materials of porcelain, wood and steel as well as its minimal aesthetic make it a convenient and easy addition to any space.

LEGO Brick Spice Rack: Brick Oven Cooking

You can create all kinds of stuff with LEGO bricks. Then there are all of the things that you can create that look like LEGO bricks, but aren’t. Here is a clever creation for that LEGO-themed kitchen you have been dreaming of.

lego spice rack
Spice racks are hit and miss. It seems like they are either really nicely designed, or very ugly. This spice rack is most definitely geeky. Therefore it is awesome in my book. It was made by Matthew Ebisu, who wanted to spice up his kitchen with LEGO. Very clever indeed, Matthew.

The body and the studs of this spice rack are made of chipboard and cardboard. And if you want to make one yourself, you can download the design template here. I wonder if you could make one out of actual LEGO bricks.

Metal Post Helps Chinese Sleep on Trains

It’s long been said that the Chinese work really hard. Apparently, they don’t have time for traditional sleep like you or I either. So it would be ideal to be able to catch up on their rest during long train rides. But how do you manage that with those hard seats? Problem solved. The solution is called the Body Supporter sleeping rack.
body supporter
This odd contraption does exactly what the name says. It supports tired bodies. The Body Supporter is a metal stick with small platforms that support the head and chest. Their sales pitch even claims that “This device is just like sleeping on your front in your actual bed.” Yeah, right.

If that isn’t enough for the tired train traveler, you can also purchase traveler’s underwear with secret pockets for your valuables and portable urine bags that allow passengers to relieve themselves without giving up their seat. Forget getting up from your nap. Looks like these hard-working people have it made.

Hooks and More Hooks

A metal rod, steel base and 19 winding hooks are all that compose the Hook Up hanger stand. Its simplicity and size make it a great for a variety of spaces small and large, from the bathroom to the foyer. 19 is kind of an odd number to land on, but I can definitely think of that many uses!  Utilitarian design at its best.

Drying Rails

The Rail Type Laundry Rack is a rework on the traditional drying rack. It features sliding hanging rails and a grooved frame, which allow the rack to be adjusted so that it gets easy to hang the laundry. Typically the rails on most laundry racks are fixed at equal distances, so it may get difficult to dry two jeans in adjacent rails. With the Rail Type Laundry Rack, you can adjust the distances between the two rails and hang clothes accordingly.

Rail Type Laundry Rack Design is a 2012 red dot award: design concept winner.
