I don’t have a single thing that I’d need a CNC router for, but after seeing what the Shaper Origins can do, I wish I did. It’s a handheld CNC machine, which in itself is amazing since these devices are usually pretty huge and static. The way it works it also pretty impressive: you create your design, then simply follow the lines through the onboard display. The Shaper Origins automatically corrects for your hand errors and even retracts the bit if you go too far off course. This way you can achieve 1/100 inch accuracy, creating intricate designs out of a slew of materials. For anyone passionate about DIY work, who wants to output more sophisticated creating, the Shaper Origins is almost magical. Again, I wish I had the time and inclination to use this machine. And also the $1,499 it currently costs to order your own.

Internet went out again? You probably know the easiest way to get that fixed is to walk to your router, unplug the darn thing and wait for things to fix themselves. Most of the time it works all the time. But it’s still annoying to have to get up off your couch, so the ResetPlug does it for you. Just plug your router into it, and then the device itself into your wall socket. It’ll connect to your WiFi network after being configured, and will periodically monitor your Internet connection; when it sees it went out, it’ll just cut power to your router, wait a bit, and power back up. Torch Router Helps Parents Manage Their Kids’ Browsing Habits

With the multitude of devices in most homes these days, it’s a bit of a hassle keeping track of who does what online. But the Torch Router can help conscientious parents keep tabs on their kids habits, as well as limit what they do online.

It’s easy-to-use interface lets you see what sites every device on your network is visiting, how much data they’re using, and how much time they’re spending online. You can set limits on each device’s usage, suspend their ability to connect to the Internet (without affecting the other devices on your network), and block specific sites on a per-device basis

Other features include the ability to pause the Internet altogether during dinner time or bedtime, and is compatible with most home gizmos and gadgets such as iPad, Xbox, Roku, Apple TV, Sonos, and Nest. A detailed report can break time spent online into categories such as social media, education and gaming, so you have a better grasp of your children’s browsing habits. And since this is all done at the router level, you know they won’t be able to erase their history before you get to it.

It’ll cost $200 once it hits retail, but the Kickstarter early-birds can get it for half that price… if the campaign funds. Expect a March 2016 delivery if that happens.

Netgear Intros Nighthawk X6 Tri-Band Router

Netgear Nighthawk RouterNetgear announced their latest in Wi-Fi routers this week at the CE Week New York Event with the Nighthawk X6 AC3200 Tri-Band Wi-Fi Router. Aside from the cool new Batman-like appearance, the router features 3 bands and increased speeds, but the tri-band isn’t really an extension of the dual-frequency routers we’ve seen, as one might initially think.

The Nighthawk provides one 2.4GHz band and two 5GHz bands, where the 5GHz is actually provided as two separate bands. Newer, faster devices can connect on a higher-speed while older, slower devices can use a slower band and not interfere with others allowing the router to deliver higher speeds. Netgear states the router can deliver up to 3.2 Gbs if you combine all three bands. That would likely be in perfect conditions and circumstances, however the potential is there.

The X6 AC3200 sports six movable antennas with instructions for use and placement and a couple of USB ports to connect networked devices. It also has the usual home router features along with VPN, SPIT, NAT and guest network support. You can pre-order one now from Amazon for $299 with delivery a little later this month.
