Liftware Self-Stabilizing Spoon Normalizes Lives

Last year, Lift Labs Design unveiled Liftware Stabilizer, a spoon with an electronic self-stabilizing handle. Liftware makes it easy for people suffering from tremors – such as those with Parkinson’s Disease – to eat on their own. This month Lift Labs is back on Indiegogo, this time not just for itself but to help others as well.

For those who are not familiar with Liftware, its handle has accelerometers that detect motion and actuators to compensate for said motion.

Liftware is used only as a spoon for now, but because all of its electronics are in the handle Lift Labs will release additional attachments in the future, including a fork and a key holder.

Pledge at least $300 (USD) on Indiegogo to get a Liftware as a reward. You can also get the device directly from Lift Labs Design, but as stated in the video above, the company will match all Indiegogo pledges up to $50,000 dollar for dollar. That means for every $295 it collects, the company will donate two Liftware units to the International Essential Tremor Foundation.

Dip And Scoop

The Foldable Coffee Measuring Spoon can be used as a spoon for coffee powder – or salt, sugar, and even tea! The physics part of the design is this: a straight strip goes deeper into the powder than a spoon with a head. A simple pressure to the long shaft of the spoon results in the formation of a spoon head. This makes it easy to scoop up the powdery ingredient.

When you release the fingers, the spoon goes back its flat form and can be stored easily.

Liftware Spoon Lets Parkinson’s Patients Feed Themselves

Liftware Spoon

People with Parkinson’s often have a difficult time feeding themselves due to the tremors associated with the disease. In most cases, someone else has to feed them because it might cause injury or result in a mess. However, this might all soon change thanks to Lift Labs’ innovator Liftware Spoon that automatically tracks and compensates for shaking motions and tremors.

The spoon is equipped with sensors that have a high degree of sensitivity, so they can detect even the slightest tremor that’s made. It then moves in the other direction to cancel that tremor out. During testing, the Liftware was found to cancel out over 70 percent of these tremors, which is enough to allow those with Parkinson’s to feed themselves once more.

The Liftware Spoon will be available next month at $300. It will come with a free app that keeps track of the detected tremors, which will allow those with Parkinson’s or other conditions to monitor their symptoms over time.

Edible Eco-Spoon Lets You Help Mother Nature Out, One Bite At a Time

Edible Spoon

Whether you’re eating breakfast on the go because you woke up late or are having takeout for lunch, the common factor between both (and with most other meals that you eat outside a proper dining area) is plastic utensils. They might not seem like much since they’re relatively small and all, but a little goes a long way. And since it takes more than twenty years to fully decompose, I’d say we’ve got more than enough of these spoons currently sitting in our landfills.

So Triangle Tree came up with a solution in the form of edible spoons called the Eco-Spoon.

Edible Spoon1

The Eco-Spoon is basically a spoon-shaped chip made from corn and other all-organic ingredients, to it’s 100% biodegradable and 100% edible. It comes in two varieties: plain, if you don’t want it to affect the taste of your grub; and sweet and spicy, if you want to complement your food with some sweet and spicy flavors.

Ramen Spoon+Fork: How a Spork Should Be

I think they had the right idea when they began making sporks and including these hybrid utensils in packs of instant noodles. However, they left a lot to be desired, especially since they didn’t really do a good job when it came to actually scooping up soup or noodles.

That is, until now.

Reinvented SporkSome folks finally saw fit to reinvent the spork and come up with a utensil that is actually useful. The spork you see here looks more likely to be able to perform its functions as both a spoon and as a fork, doesn’t it? While it was specifically designed for eating ramen noodles and soup, it could also come in handy for pasta and other saucy dishes.

The Ramen Spoon+Fork is available from Uncommon Goods for $14 (USD).

Now excuse me while I go fix up a bowl of instant noodles…

Tasty Tastings

A wholesome, flavorsome meal is what cooking is all about. You know you want to serve the perfect dish for family and friends, but sometimes the right flavoring can get the better of you. To make sure that you always dish out the perfect meal, Tastee helps you by doing the tasting for you. Shaped like a spoon, the device is laced with receptors based on the human taste bud. This means it is adept at telling you if you got the flavors right, or if you need to add a pinch of salt and a dash of vinegar!

Tastee is a 2012 Electrolux Design Lab top ten finalist entry.
