This wind-powered street light is peak sustainable technology for urban architecture!

We are going through a climate crisis and a large part of it is due to energy consumption. As the population increases, more and more energy is consumed which leads to the planet getting warm faster. To help combat the problem, Berlin-based designer and student, Tobias Trübenbacher, created Papilio – a street light that is powered by wind and conserves energy thereby reducing CO2 emissions on a large scale if implemented.

Papilio was designed to combat light pollution and growing energy consumption that has a big impact on our planet. It is an insect-friendly street light that generates energy from wind. The climate-neutral energy generation becomes an aesthetic play at all times. It has an integrated Savonius wind rotor for which the wind direction is irrelevant so it can be installed anywhere. The street light has been designed with an insect-friendly light spectrum and gets automatically activated only when needed. Cities become more windy as we build them up higher and Papilio is a sustainable solution that will let us light up streets while reducing the impact on the environment!

“Would be nice if the excess energy can be given back to the grid. Imagine every light pole having this. It would create a ton of almost free energy.”

Making the Most of Solar

Banca-solar-(1)

Solar-powered outdoor lighting has come a long way but with today’s low-power/high-output LED technology, that leaves plenty of harnessed energy to spare! This design by Fernando Iñiguez Celi goes beyond providing illumination for parks, pathways and roads… it also doubles as a charging station and triples as a place to sit and rest! Built-in USB ports make it a convenient pitstop for charging your phone, tablet, computer whether you’re low or just feel like working in the fresh air. Made of stainless steel and triplex, it’s built to withstand the elements and has a fresh, modern aesthetic that will withstand the test of time!

Flower-inspired Outdoor Illumination

Cornflower_01

With its burst of LED “petals”, the latest in KEHA3’s Wannabe LED family is a street light inspired by the national flower of the group’s native Estonia. Simply named Cornflower, the elements of its lighting fittings can be freely directed with a simple joint. This enables each unit to light the road, the surrounding buildings as well as different objects at the same time. The number of modular Wannabe LED-profile elements used varies from 6 to 8. These modern luminaires, made of aluminum and galvanized powder-coated steel, are ideal as street light poles with a height of 6-12 meters. It’s also possible to add a smart controller to the Cornflower lighting solution so they can be easily adjusted by personnel as surroundings change.

Because regular Street Lights are mainstream

You’ll see a wide variety of things on Yanko Design. You’ll notice that many of them are concepts that may seem ludicrous, out of the reach of realms. Truth is, we pretty much decide where innovation takes us. Twenty years back if anyone told me I could take 4K video with a phone camera, I’d ask them what 4K meant. Ideas decide the path of innovation, and therefore no matter how outlandish they seem, we believe in showcasing the extraordinary on Yanko. The Eco-Mushroom is a city planner’s most valuable future asset.

Masked as a pretty looking streetlight, the Eco-Mushroom also has an air purifier inside it. It pulls dirty air from the top and releases clean air at the middle of the lamppost. Around the air inlets are your LEDs that illuminate your street at night. Imagine a million of those things purifying the air around your city!

Light Up the City

The conceptual Noise Power system explores the transformation of sound energy, specifically that of road traffic, into usable light. Designed to surround roadways, the solution harnesses energy produced by acoustic micro-vibrations which are passed through a sensitive membrane to a generator that provides electricity to low-voltage LEDs. The result is a large scale system that not only reduces noise pollution, but provides safety lighting powered by the very drivers that need it!

Smart Streetlight

Smart design meets urban light in this minimal LED street lamp design by Igor Solovyov. The steel and aluminum-cast lamp reaches upward with just a slight curve at the top; enough to cast a bright light to the sidewalk without overly-obstructing the view of the sky above. A cluster of large and small multidirectional LEDs ensure light is dispersed as efficiently as possible to the area below.

Linear Street Lamp

Designed for Bep’s Car & Motorcycle Accessories, the B-Light is a modern twist on the street lamp that is instantly recognizable in “traffic red.” Formed from a single, laser-cut metal sheet, the design consists of a straight line that folds in on itself, like the sinuous lines of light obtained by photographing moving cars at night. With a bright LED light that’s parallel to the ground it also does its best to minimize light pollution.
