March was an exciting month at Yanko Design. We came across innovative and intriguing designs that left a lasting impression on our minds. Three months into 2021 and the design industry is raging. Our curiosity and interest are piqued – what does 2021 have in store for us? Are new horizons going to be discovered and boundaries pushed in the design world? And what will these experiments in creativity eventually lead to? As we keep our fingers crossed, and hope to be thoroughly impressed, let’s appreciate the best designs that we have come across till now! Here’s a collection of the designs we absolutely loved in the month of March. Each of these designs touched a chord within us. Not only do they address unique problems, but also promise to make our daily lives a little better. We hope you enjoy them as well!

This innovative desk design uses wall bars at its core with modular attachments that let you use it as your 9-5 set up and then transform it into beast mode. “The designer wall bars are one of the most flexible wall bars in Germany. Can be installed anywhere in the room without dowels. Just stretch it between the floor and the rigid ceiling,” says the team on the no-screw assembly which is a huge USP especially if you are renting your home or move frequently. Shapely additions crafted from wood make the aesthetic wall bars a multifunctional fitness device for the whole family. You can customize it per your ceiling and your needs, in fact, the company also sells kid-friendly setups that have slides instead of workout benches! It lets you use a single corner for a home office, homeschooling, home gym, and a kid zone seamlessly without taking up an insane amount of space.

If you’re looking at this 4×4 Bugatti Chiron Terracross concept and going “something doesn’t feel right here”, it’s completely intentional. The Chiron, a beast made for perfect roads and luxurious metropolises, set against a rugged terrain with those massive tires just feels unnatural… but there’s a beauty in its unnatural design. Created by Rafał Czaniecki as a mere pandemic project, the Bugatti Chiron Terracross concept is a dystopian beauty made for a world where futuristic cybercities and wastelands coexist. Off the bat, the Terracross isn’t your average Chiron. It comes with a few upgrades that are more than apparent when you look at the automobile. Right off the bat, you’ll notice its outlandish wheels and suspension, which make sense given its all-terrain nature but create a ground clearance that’s completely unusual for a Bugatti. The headlight and taillights are altered too, with a honeycomb-ish pattern that’s also found on the car’s exhausts, the wheel design, as well as on the large, outward-extending fenders.

This gives a completely new meaning to the word ‘papercut’! Say hello to the Paper Razor, a sustainable alternative to the disposable plastic razor. The Paper Razor, as its name suggests, comes with an all-paper body and sports a metal blade-head on top. Designed to be flat-packed, the single-use razor comes completely unfolded and can easily be put together in a matter of seconds by merely folding in the sides and the top to create a rigid, ergonomic razor with a grippy handle. Its origami-inspired design gives it as much strength and maneuverability as a plastic razor while minimizing the use of plastic by as much as 98%. The result? A razor that can be easily flat-packed and shipped, used and then disposed of… safely, of course.

TTMAC77’s sleek half-cover could be constructed from ash wood with stainless steel accents, offering a delicate mix of casual adaptability and a touch of luxe elegance. The rotational, hinge rod allows the turntable’s cover to open and close, allowing for records to be swapped in and out. The turntable’s platter aligns neatly with a typical 12-inch record and without a dust cover, the wooden cover only hides half of the record so the record can always be seen spinning. With minimal frills and whistles underneath, the TTMAC77 appears considerably sophisticated, yet simple. Bresn’s TTMAC 77 turntable utilizes linear tracking, which means that, unlike conventional pivot tonearms, linear-tracking tonearms do not swing across a record, but instead slide over the record in a radial, straight line.

The TRANSFAST measures a mere 73mm in length (2.8 inches) and weighs 24 grams (0.8oz). It sports a metal body that not only allows it to look sleek and compact but also doubles as a nifty heat sink, ensuring that the SSD remains cool during file transfers. A Type-C port allows you to rapidly transfer as well as read files from the SSD, making it perfect for everything from backups to using as a drive to store and edit heavy video footage. In fact, with its ability to read data at 550Mbps and write at 480Mbps, you could practically transfer a BluRay film in the time it took you to read this sentence. Moreover, the USB-C port gives the TRANSFAST unrivaled compatibility, allowing it to work with Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS, DSLRs, the Nintendo Switch, and a host of other gaming consoles including the PlayStation.

Titled the ‘Pallet Thief’, this wooden throne was created by Anton Brunberg in response to a question he once had – “How to still celebrate the pure joy of making and craftsmanship without having to use up the planet’s precious raw materials?” Just by Anton’s calculations, there are roughly six billion pallets in circulation worldwide, most of which are made of wood. Each year, one percent of those pallets (approx 60,000) reach the end of their lifespan or are lost. By tapping into this industrial global supply, Anton discovered a way of turning unusable waste from one industry into raw material for another industry. The ‘Pallet Thief’ is certainly no ordinary piece of furniture, but then again, it’s a vision and a proof of concept for Anton, who aimed at showing the potential this recycled pallet wood has in the furniture-design world. It comes with hundreds of pallet planks joined together before the seat is carved out of the central mass.

The Razer Reusable Straw comes made from food-grade 304 stainless steel, with a telescopic design that allows it to be disassembled when not in use, for easy storage. When put together, the straw measures 230mm – optimally long enough for a Venti-size drink at Starbucks, although it isn’t diametrically wide enough for a McFlurry or Boba Tea (so don’t bother trying). For hot drinks, the anodized black straw comes with an acid-green silicone sleeve that prevents your lips from accidentally touching hot metal. The entire straw is infinitely reusable and comes with its own cleaning brush for maintenance purposes, all packaged in a nifty silicone carrying case with a carabiner, so you could strap your Reusable Straw right to your belt loop like EDC, or tuck it into your pocket and carry it with you everywhere you go.

Woo-bi desk lamp instantly reminds us of our childhood when we would wear brightly colored raincoats and splash water everywhere as we walked around with our friends. ‘Woo-bi’ literally means raincoat in Korean and the emotional design expresses a child’s innocence through soft lighting. Complete with a little ‘hood’, the playful form and warm CMF really connect with the user. We love the form of this design and the hat adds in functionality by being movable – just as it protects you from the rain, move the hat to control your exposure to the lamp’s brightness. Another fun feature is the knob of the lamp, which doubles as the tip of the umbrella/hat and helps you dim/brighten the lamp as needed. The charging point comes with a magnet for quick docking. If the yellow is too chirpy, there is a green variant to soothe your eyes!

The Constrained Ball by Gihawoo Design is one of those concepts I can easily see myself buying from a late-night infomercial. I’m not saying it’s bad but the novel approach to a simple kind of problem is endearing. Fitted with a gasket, the gadget helps you draw straight lines and indicates the length. OMG, is this the end of the ruler’s dominance?!? No, but I quite like this concept. I’m a stickler for drawing straight lines. It’s either gotta be straight and perfect or it’s a no-go for me.

The Fully Cora Standing Desk Converter is a handy office accessory that lets you work while standing! Sitting in one position and working all day can become increasingly tedious, not to mention it’s not very good for your posture. In such a scenario, the Full Cora Desk allows you to stand up, stretch your legs, and work in a fresh position. The desk extends from 1.3″ to 15.7″, so you can adjust it according to your requirements. Once you’re done using it, you can fold it into a flat form, and easily store it wherever you please. It’s a nifty work from home product that can amp up your productivity, and keep you refreshed and energized!
