Sonic Screwdriver Wand: Doctor Potter? Harry Who?

If you like your Harry Potter mixed with some Doctor Who, this is your lucky day. Here is a sonic screwdriver wand. You can make your own. But is it magic or science? It is both and it is amazing.

Both Harry and the Doctor would love this. It was created by Instructables contributor CabbitCastle. Someone wanted him to make a wand of the Tenth Doctor’s sonic screwdriver, so he made plans in Photoshop and used a lathe to make it. The wand box was made from poster board and foam pads, and naturally, it’s been decorated to look like a TARDIS.

Tutorials for each project are available so you can make both the wand and box. Now you are almost ready to cosplay as Doctor Harry Potter. All you need is a pair of glasses and trenchcoat.

Incantor brings World of Warcraft to real life (hands-on)

Image

There's plenty of cool stuff to see on the floor of this year's TechCrunch Disrupt, but nothing's likely quite so eye-catching as Incantor, a mobile game that utilizes your smartphone and, naturally, a magic wand, to bring fantasy-style action to the real world -- or as the game's creators put it, to "bring World of Warcraft to real life." The wand speaks to your handset via Bluetooth, detecting your gestures and generating "spells." Hold your phone in portrait, and you'll get personal information, including your character level, spell bag, etc. Flip it to landscape, and you'll get a Google Map overlay, showing you other players in your area.

There are 13 different game play modes in all, and you can play as a group or solo. Moveable Code was only showing off one wand at the show, but the company expects to make 10 available in all, representing different classes. Interested parties can find out more at the Kickstarter link in the source below. Beta testing will begin in early Q4, with widespread availability coming by year's end. The wand, which offers up feedback based on gameplay (including interactions with other players), should run you around $60 when it hits the market. You can play the game sans phone, but we're told its not quite as fun.

Either way, sparring, quests and games capture the flag should get people outside a bit more than PC-based MMORPGs. Sunscreen, however, is not included. Check out a video of Incantor's creators demonstrating the game after the break.

Incantor Smartphone Game Comes with Wand: Harry Potter 2.0

Of all fictional weapons, I find the wand to be the least appealing, because it’s a stick. But at the same time it’s really easy to pretend to be a wand-wielding magician, because it’s a stick. If you’ve always wanted to re-enact the wand fight scenes from Harry Potter, check out Incantor, a game that is played with a wand imbued with the magic of Bluetooth.

incantor smartphone game

At its core, Incantor involves players casting a spell to defeat monsters or other players. Spells are cast via gestures made using the wand, which as I said communicates to the smartphone app via Bluetooth. It also has haptic feedback, so your hand will feel how a fireball feels like. Apparently it feels the same as getting a text message.

Another unique and possibly expensive feature of Incantor is that there are different types of wands – some deal direct damage, others heal or give status effects. Perhaps other wands can make wishes come true. If you’re interested, you should check out the Incantor blog for more details on the game’s mechanics. Get back to me if you see something about that wish granting wand.

Developer Movable Code is currently raising funds for Incantor on Kickstarter; a pledge of at least $100(USD) gets you a wand and a copy of the game, which will be available for both iOS and Android devices. Unfortunately, the prospects of the fundraiser reaching its goal of $100,000 seem slim at this point. As of this writing they’ve got 21 days to go and have only raised $7,277.

I’m no marketing wizard but I think it would have helped if they targeted kids instead. Children won’t give a damn about being seen in public waving a wand about, but older gamers might need to cast an invisibility spell beforehand.
