I feel like this year’s prepared me with so much material, I could possibly do a PhD on purification. From masks to filters, antimicrobial materials, and even ultraviolet purifiers, I’ve witnessed an absolute explosion of devices that protect and purify, designed to keep you healthy in the long run… and even though this category is saturated, to say the least, something as ingenious as the Nuvoe quickly managed to grab my eye.

Nuvoe isn’t a product as much as it’s an accessory. Designed as a device you can drop into any water bottle (as long as it has a neck diameter of 36mm), the Nuvoe uses UV-C lights to purify the water inside your bottle in under a minute. Back in 2018, Joop Opmeer, the young inventor behind the YOS bottle, noticed how his mother would forget to take her medications on time, sometimes skipping an entire day. It’s a task that’s easy to forget, but one that can have serious health consequences depending on the necessity of that medication. However, Joop’s mother isn’t the only one making these mistakes. In his home country, The Netherlands, 68% of people who take daily supplements or medication forget at least once a month. To make their lives slightly more convenient, Joop designed a portable pillbox that someone would be less likely to forget. This was the inspiration for the YOS bottle.

YOS, which stands for Your Organized Supplements, is a reusable water bottle with a detachable pill holder. The bottle holds 375ml and the pillbox has seven compartments (labeled for each day of the week). Although, if the containers are too small, YOS offers a larger, 4-compartment box as an alternative. The bottles also come in four vibrant colors, so you’ll want to take it everywhere you go. They are also dishwasher safe, which adds to their convenience.

The YOS is more than a clever, functional product. The company itself has a mission that buyers will feel good about supporting. So, you can see that although the YOS bottle caters specifically to individuals who take supplements, its appeal is universal. After all, we all need water to survive.

This water bottle and pillbox hybrid was designed to restore young cancer patients’ confidence!

Pengu was born out of empathy for those diagnosed with cancer. It is heartbreaking and life-changing at any age, but more so when you are a teenager or young adult (TYA) because it takes away from their chance at having a normal developmental trajectory during a phase of life that is crucial for social, cognitive, and emotional development. Pengu was designed to improve the quality of life for TYA cancer patients on hospital leave or in remission by helping them feel and live a little more independently.

At this age, usually, a TYA patient would be moving out for school, getting their own space, experimenting with career options, and more but it all comes to a giant pause as their life suddenly revolves around health appointments. The constant monitoring and check-ups are bound to make anyone feel like they don’t have control over their life, and especially with a disease like cancer, so Pengu – a water bottle and pill holder hybrid – is a small product that can make a big impact by giving them a little control back. It helps to smoothly facilitate two critical things for the patient – taking their medication on time and hydrating enough. These two tasks are things the best of us forget all the time, but it is something vital for a patient’s recovery and therefore can’t be missed. With Pengu, the user will not have to feel conscious about having a big pillbox and the medicines will be easier to access compared to being in their bags. When the user starts to streamline their own basic needs of taking medication and drinking water, it starts to slowly build back their confidence about being able to leave home and readjust to life outside cancer. Besides, Pengu is sleek, minimal, and stylish so it takes away the feeling of “people are watching me when I have my pills.”

The name might hint on the fact that the form was inspired by the emperor penguin and their chick. “The subtle ribbed touch points on each side represent the flippers, whilst the shut line of the lid represents the beak. The pill holder slots into the base of the bottle, similarly to how the penguin would shield its chick from the cold,” explains Spence. Even the CMF was thoughtfully picked out to mimic the water-resistant feathers of the penguin. The jet black color is bold yet minimal and the bottle is powder-coated in stainless steel for sturdiness and insulation. Since it is still a concept, it would be fun to see if there was a digital element to it like subtle reminders to hydrate or take pills. The penguin is a symbol of resilience – no matter how harsh the storm, they must keep moving forward to survive and it is a beautiful reminder to those fighting cancer every day.

Water Bottle Flipping Robots Are a Thing Now

Me in 1988: By 2019 we are going to have flying cars. It’s gonna be so cool! Me in 2019: Looks at water bottle flipping robots in disgust. This is where we put our engineering energy? I mean, explosive flipping robots might be fun, but water bottle flipping robots? And I’m still driving on the road here. What the heck, guys?

The two videos below that show a bunch of water bottle flipping robots that were built by high school students and demonstrated at Japan’s ROBOCON 2018. I have to admit, these robots make it look easy. They just toss the water bottles in the air, flipping them perfectly so that they land on table tops that are set at different heights.

They can even bounce the bottle off a trampoline first before perfectly executing a landing. It’s pretty impressive to watch it happen. I suppose when robots are spending their time doing useless stuff like this, it extends our human lives by keeping them busy. Keep up the good work! We’ll provide all of the bottles you need to compete endlessly.

All I can say is that if humanity’s survival ever depends on landing a bottle perfectly on a table, we have our saviors.

If I asked you to imagine a water bottle, you’d probably think of a flimsy, disposable plastic PET bottle with a branding-label around its waist. Even if you go a step further to look at reusable plastic bottles or even metal thermoses, there’s an underlying design that unites all of them into an invisible category. This invisible category (which helps you differentiate between the bottle designs for water, or beer, or ketchup) is a nice guideline to follow, but more often than not, it results in a lot of products looking insipidly similar.

Every once in a while a product comes and shatters the mold, creating a design that uses new materials, or boasts of a new form that instantly sets it apart. The Hashy does both. Utilizing materials that are relatively new to water-bottle-design, and a form factor that takes heavy inspiration from perfume bottles, the Hashy is bold, eye-catching, and is a pretty great water bottle/thermos too!

At first glance, the Hashy stands out, with its perfume-bottle inspired design. Its redesigned cap takes heavy visual cues from vintage perfume bottles with their spherical lids. Implemented on a water bottle, it instantly sets the Hashy apart, imparting a premium look to the flask.

The Hashy comes with a double-wall stainless steel construction, and keeps beverages cold for 24 hours, and warm for 12 hours. Now, here’s a design everyone can use, because it doesn’t matter who you are… you’re either not drinking enough water or not often enough! Especially useful for those who get busy at work, Drinki is designed to keep you properly hydrated throughout the day.

It features a top lid infuser so you can add in your favorite tea leaves or other flavors. Because it can be used for tea or cold water, it also sports a cute, glowing temperature gauge that mimics the shape of a water droplet so you can always ensure your water is just right. Because it’s easy to forget to hydrate, it alerts users with a sound and vibration alert when it’s time to quench. A digital happy face at the bottom of the water droplet screen will track your progress and display a happy face when you’re staying hydrated. The design principles behind the Spain based company Closca are deeply rooted in preservation through efficient, useful problem solving. I say preservation because Closca’s first ever design was the Closca Helmet, an urban cycling helmet that would actually collapse into a flat-pack, encouraging you to never leave home without it (because it isn’t bulky), and in turn use the helmet to preserve your head and health. Closca’s aim is now much larger than self-preservation. It aims at preserving our planet.

Closca’s vision is a pretty mighty one. They want to absolutely banish disposable plastic bottles. How do they pull off such a mighty task and overthrow a convenient, everyday product that generates over 80 billion units in waste each year? They replace not just the product, but the mindset too.

The Closca Bottle is a rather slick, clean looking borosilicate glass bottle that comes with a very handy, flexible silicone sleeve.
