A Sports Duffle that also doubles up as your gym locker

The Tribal sports bag is an aggregation of a number of good ideas, tied up well into a sports bag that’s a pleasure to own, use, and occasionally flaunt. Touted as the world’s first anti-theft sports bag, the Tribal comes with three security measures. A 3-digit combination lock sits on the front, protecting your sports gear and your belongings stashed in the main compartment. The Tribal even packs a YKK 8RCW double layer, anti-puncture zipper that can’t be pried or broken apart to access your belongings. While these two features secure the items within your bag, the bag itself has a retractable steel cable built into it, allowing you to tether your bag to a post, or a fence, preventing thieves from making off with the bag itself.

I don’t have the statistics of sports-bag theft on me at the moment, but it’s just common sense that any item of storage, from a briefcase containing nuclear codes, to a child’s lunchbag, should at its most basic level, deter theft. Claiming to be the first sports-bag that champions this cause, the Tribal, like I mentioned at the very outset, combines some pretty good features to make theft a drag. When you don’t have the luxury of a locker room, the Tribal works just fine, looking absolutely dapper, but discouraging anyone from accessing the contents of said dapper bag.

Its anti-theft properties aside, the bag comes with a design that’s versatile and feature-laden. Designed to be easy to carry when empty, the bag comes with a foldable design that compresses it into a flat pack that’s a cinch to carry around. When unfolded, the bag has multiple compartments for segregating your stuff, along with a rather innovative laundry/shoes pouch that opens inwards, allowing you to store soiled clothes or cleats without having them touch fresh clothes. The pouch comes with a ventilated lining to allow proper air circulation too.

Made with a specific purpose in mind, the Tribal bag packs all the features necessary to make it the ideal anti-theft sports bag. With security features that protect your gear/belongings while you’re engaged in your activities, detachable and adjustable straps that allow you to carry the bag in any way you see fit, ventilated pouches that prevent odor accumulation, and even a rain-cover to shield your bag from precipitation, the Tribal does what it set out to do, and does it well. Additional props for the reflective details on the bag that give it great visibility in the dark too, making the Tribal quite the allrounder!

The Criminal-Confusing Carry-on!

Zippers… a designer’s mortal enemy. They’re hideous, painful, and not particularly secure. Yet we can’t live without them. They’re on our jeans, jackets, and bags. Now while jeans and jackets aren’t much of a threat, zips on bags are rather vulnerable to being picked. Hell, sometimes I forget to even zip my bag, or the zip breaks, which is sort of asking for trouble.

The immediate thing one notices about the Bobby Anti-Theft Backpack is its rather beautiful design that features not one single zip. The bag is fabric through and through, so while it looks great, it also throws the thief off guard because they’ll be struggling to find the opening!

The Bobby was designed just like a regular backpack, but with one crucial rearrangement. The zip still exists, but it stays concealed, and can only be accessed from the back of the bag rather than the front. It stays concealed behind a sleeve and completely hidden from sight, but only you know that secret. The backpack’s overall design aim was to be robust and reliable. Aside from the hidden zips, it comes with a PP inlay in the fabric that gives it structure while also making it slash-proof. The front face is made of a water-repellent, stain-proof fabric that gives the bag a color contrast, and a rather iconic line on the bottom in the center also serves as a reflective strip for people who commute on bicycles.

Other features of this undeniably iconic looking bag are brilliant compartmentalization. The way the bag opens up feels almost like a briefcase thanks to its sturdy structure, allowing for a rather well-planned inside, with spaces and pockets for all your carry-ables. It even has three hidden instant-access pockets in the straps for things like business cards, or access cards. If all that weren’t already the makes of a superior bag, the Bobby even features a USB port that connects the power bank inside your bag to the phone outside your bag, so you don’t have to fumble through the backpack for a charger in public, effectively giving away the secret way to open your uber-cool theft-deterrent backpack! Go ahead… don’t be a part of the 400,000 people who get their bags or pockets picked per day!

New Anti-Theft System Monitors Your Touchscreen Behavior

bad-guy-steaks-phone

Since phones are both small and valuable, they tend to be a hot item for many thieves, but some new anti-theft technologies may help deter phone burglary.

Last year, in the US alone, lost and stolen phones cost consumers over $30 billion.  Many initiatives have been discussed to abate this expense, such as fingerprint scanners and even a proposed national cell phone kill switch, but it’s so easy to steal a cell phone.  There has yet to be a foolproof method, but there are always more innovative new ways to stop a would-be thief emerging.

Researchers at Georgia Tech have been testing brand new system for Android called LatentGesture that monitors the way you use your cell phone–specifically the way you interact with the screen–and learns to watch for your unique behavior.  It then uses your behavior to monitor your device for anyone that doesn’t behave like you, and locks them out.

Everyone has a unique pattern with the way they interact–touch, tap, and swipe–at their touch screens.  The way we interact with our technology can be just as unique as our fingerprint or retinal scan.

The beauty of this system is that even if someone manages to guess a PIN code or password to access a stolen phone, they are still constantly being scrutinized by the software and will likely end up getting locked out anyway if they shouldn’t be poking around.  The software was found to be 98% accurate on phones and 97% accurate on tablets.  Considering Apple’s Touch ID only works 90% of the time for some users, this could be a much more reliable solution.

Behavioral security is also inherently stronger than any fixed or static security methods such as biometric scanners for fingerprints or irises, because fingerprints and irises are static.  They can be stolen and faked.  The problem when someone steals your fingerprints is that they are permanently attached to your body and cannot be changed.

Behaviors are extremely difficult to steal and even more difficult to mimic.  Accurately observing the way someone interacts with their phone for a long enough period of time is extremely difficult.  It’s not specified how detailed of a sample is collected by LatentGesture, but there are so many different and unique ways to interact with your touch screen from the distance and arc of a swipe the the staccato of a tap, “stealing” someone’s behavior is far more difficult than stealing their fingerprint, especially for a snatch and grab.

Phones are easy to steal, and the technology necessary to crack security is always hot on the heels of new security developments, but hopefully some new anti-theft initiatives–such as LatentGesture–will go a long way towards curbing the rampant phone theft.

You Can’t Steal these Exploding Ink Pint Glasses

exploding ink pint glass You Cant Steal these Exploding Ink Pint Glasses
We all have that one friend that always swipes a pint glass from bars. Maybe it’s you. Maybe it’s me. Maybe I’m sitting alone in a room completely surrounded by shelves of commemorative pint glasses with nothing to show for it other than glassware and a hangover, sobbing at the waste my life has become. Or not. It all could have been prevented if all glasses were outfitted with these Exploding Ink Pint Glass Collars. Much like the dye packs on money from the bank, if you go more than 100 meters from the bar, they explode on you.
kopparberg pint glass You Cant Steal these Exploding Ink Pint Glasses
Cider maker Kopparberg created these anti-theft glasses and they are actually being tested at a London bar. Of course you could just order your beers smart bank robber style and request one with “no dye packs”. Personally I always dress up as a clown when I go to bars, order drinks without paying for them, then slip out of my clown outfit and blend in with the regular customers and my best friend Randy Quaid as I make my exit slyly to the street with Geena Davis. Home free.

A Different Kind of Anti-Theft

When it comes to bicycle theft, the saying remains true- “if they want it bad enough, they’ll take it.” The designers at Cycling Boom believe bigger chains and bulky locks are just one solution to deterring theft, which is why they’ve created a unique tag system that is effective in a different way. These discrete metal tags can be placed anywhere on the bike and feature a custom identification number that can be looked up in an online universal registry system. Buyers can look up the used bike’s ID to ensure they aren’t purchasing a stolen bike, discouraging overall theft.

Google patents Project Glass motionbased theft detection, locks up if it feels 'unnatural' movement

We know that you're never gonna take your Google glasses off, but if some nefarious lout feels differently, the boys and girls in Mountain View's X lab have got you covered. The company has patented a system whereby the device can identify "unnatural" movements and lock the headset if it feels the violent motion of them being wrenched from your face. Even better, while your would-be assailant is making off with the $1,500 gear, it'll be contacting the authorities to ensure that they can't get far with their ill-gotten HMD. If nothing else, we'll won't worry as much when pre-order customers 782 and 788 go out of an evening.
