Third Eye for Cyclists

With more and more urban dwellers opting for bicycles over cars, it’s to be expected that more riding accidents between regular traffic and cyclists will occur. The Safeye system adds an additional layer of protection to riders by giving them a view of following traffic. The system detects when an object (such as a car) has approached from behind, first alerting to the rider with tactile vibration in the handles, and then on their smartphone with a live video feed from the rear facing camera.

Electro Kicks

Designed for bicyclists and joggers, Adam Nagy’s Lacoste Laser Cruiser shoe features electroluminescent fabric that not only gives the shoe head-turning style, but an added layer of defense and safety. Much brighter and longer lasting than glow-in-the-dark plastic, the EL fabric can be activated and deactivated by the wearer so they are glowing only when they want to be seen. Simply hold the heels together for a few seconds and BAM- Tron lighting at your feet!

Shockproof Backpack

The Juggernaut cyclist’s backpack aims to protect the rider as much as the contents in the event of an accident or fall. Composed of rigid yet lightweight CURV thermoplastic material, the backpack hugs the wearer like a motorcycle fairing, offering added protection to the areas most susceptible to injury including ribs, shoulders, kidneys, and spine. With its aerodynamic teardrop shape, ergonomic straps and overall lightness, the cyclist will barely know its there… unless they fall, in which case they’ll be glad they were wearing it!

Google and Sustrans join forces, bring bike navigation to UK Maps

Google and Sustrans

Pedaling your way through the streets of London Town and eager to avoid giant hills or dangerous traffic? Well, Google Maps is about to become your new best friend. The (still kinda-sorta) search company partnered with Sustrans to bring cycling directions to UK users of its mapping app. Now, alongside your typical driving, walking and public transit options you'll see an adorable little biking icon. Really, there's not much more to say, it's a feature we in the US have been enjoying for quite some time and we're happy that our friend across the pond are finally joining the party. There's a celebratory video and some PR after the break, if that sort of thing intrigues you.

VisiJax turns you into one big bicycle warning system

Image
Anyone who's ever done any bike riding in a big city knows that it's one of the more harrowing experiences of modern society. So, why not protect yourself as much as humanly possible? The VisiJax electronic cycling jacket seems like a pretty solid start. The neon-colored waterproof windbreaker features some 23 LEDs worth of butt-saving protection, with white lights on the front and red on the rear. The iMASS active signaling system, meanwhile, detects when the cyclist lifts his or her arm and triggers the corresponding turn signal. The jacket runs on three AAA batteries, which should give you around 200 hours of use. You can pick one up now in the UK for £129 (or £149 after May 31st).
