Dehydrated Edible Zebra Tarantula

There’s all sorts of jerky and dehydrated foods you can buy these days, many of which you would look forward to eating. And then there’s the Dehydrated Zebra Tarantula. Yep, inside that can is one huge edible spider. Thankfully it’s not alive, but it once was. Now it’s food, boiled and then dehydrated and flavored like barbecue. Not fried like those other edible bugs, this is the healthy choice. High in protein for it’s size. No artificial flavors (not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing in this case). No artificial colors.

This dehydrated monster masterfully straddles the line between something you either want to try to see how it tastes, or something you give as a novelty gift or unusual stocking stuffer. If you choose gag gift, nobody will believe that there’s an actual spider in there until they open it up and hilarity further ensues. And maybe with enough eggnog in you or your victim and some bravery, this could make a little snack.

Artist Creates Disturbing Superhero Figures Out of Insect and Crab Shells

Some people play with action figures. Other people play with bugs. Ew! This guy plays with both. Double ew! This student in Osaka, Japan known as @ride_hero on Twitter has a very interesting hobby. He makes action figures out of insect and crab shells.

We know this because he posted several photos of his disturbing creations. They may be disturbing, but I have to admit, they are also very cool and he is very talented. It begs the question, why does he have so many insect and crab shells laying around? And once you ask that, it becomes even creepier. He may be an insect serial killer. We just don’t know. Don’t want to know.

These truly are heroes in a half shell. One of his favorite shells appears to be that of the cicada, which make me feel all icky and gross. I have to be honest, there’s no way I could touch these, never mind putting them on my shelf.

Maybe he’ll make a Spawn out of prawn one day. I think that should be his next creepy masterpiece. This guy does really great work. Just keep them away from me is all I’m saying.

Chirps Chips are Made from Crickets

I hate crickets. You know, those bugs that somehow find their way into your home and spend the night chirping and keeping you awake. I have a strict “stomp that bastard” rule in my house. If you see a cricket inside and let it live, you hunt until you find and smash it, lest it keep me awake at night. While I want those annoying buggers dead, I’d never eat a cricket.

For those more daring, there are now chips that are made from crickets, appropriately called Chirps. Each of the chi(r)ps is made with one whole cricket. I assume those black dots to be smashed cricket guts. You can get them in BBQ, cheddar, or sea salt flavors to cover up the disgusting bug taste. Each bag offers up 5g of protein, courtesy of insects.

A bag of Chirps sells for $3.99(USD) over at ThinkGeek. I’d rather huff whey powder than eat a chip made out of a smashed bug.
