This stress-ball from the future levitates as you meditate!

It’s funny that in most aspects, the Buda Ball is the absolute opposite of a stress ball – It’s hard, unlike the soft foamy stress ball, it’s contact-less, unlike the stress ball, which needs you to physically compress it to release tension… but the funny bit is that the Buda Ball is arguably more stress-busting than squeezing a foam sphere to ease your anxiety.

The Buda Ball’s levitating-ball is literally a visual interpretation of how you’d want to feel. It’s reflective, levitates, and holds its own (wait, is it named after Buddha?!)

Designed by the team who created Flyte, the floating lightbulb that could illuminate without any wires, Buda Ball operates on the same principle of magnetic levitation. Instead of a tungsten bulb, however, the Buda Ball features a 20mm metal sphere that levitates against a wooden base. The Buda Ball’s special brand of levitating tech allows it to work horizontally as well as vertically, which means your ball and base could be placed either on a coffee table, or even mounted on a wall. The ball, once lowered onto its electromagnetic base, finds its levitating position (with a little bit of practice) and floats with its signature carefree spirit. The idea is to emulate the ball, by clearing your surroundings, elevating yourself, and being in a state of carefree zen… sound familiar?

The Buda Ball + base comes in a variety of colors and wooden finishes, but my eye gravitates instantly to the Buda Box, a special-edition set that lets you literally levitate the metal ball with your mind! The Buda Box comes with its own wearable ECG reader that maps brain-waves to a levitation controller, allowing you to make the ball levitate as you meditate. The Buda Box isn’t really for sale though, although it will be awarded to one lucky backer of the project. The project begins shipping in July 2020, so until then we’ll just have to settle for a GIF of that floating sphere in action. To be honest, the GIF itself has such an oddly satisfying vibe to it I can’t begin to imagine how calmingly zen the real levitating orb will make me feel…

Buda Ball: A Levitating Sphere Designed to Lower Stress

Buda Ball is a magnetically levitating sphere that hovers in mid-air. Designed to lower our stress levels, Buda Ball floats and rotates hypnotically in an invisible magnetic field, creating a soothing, time-stopping visual experience: a reminder to live in the present moment.

These days we’re stressed more than ever. Our senses are often overwhelmed by the noise of information. Buda Ball is a reminder to take a deep breath and to slow down.

Buda Ball is perfect for your desk. It’s a mini-art installation that combines science with design providing a gentle reminder of how to find your center of gravity during turbulent times.

The minimalistic design combined with mind-boggling magnetic levitation technology, makes Buda Ball the ultimate conversation piece.

Visually Mesmerizing, Strangely Satisfying

Buda Ball seems to defy the laws of gravity, floating freely in the air through a magnetic field. Combining both art and science, Buda ball is a unique design object for the Zen minimalist.

Buda Ball levitates both vertically AND horizontally thanks to the carefully crafted magnetic levitation technology.

An interview with Simon, creator of Buda Ball.

A Visual Meditation

Suspended in the air like a drop of water frozen in time, Buda Ball hovers and rotates in mid-air giving us that time-stopping illusion: a reminder to slow down and be mindful of the present moment.

Magnetic Magic

Designed to remain balanced in perfect equilibrium, Buda Ball finds its center resisting the forces of gravity.

Setting up Buda Ball is like a lesson in meditation. It requires practice, patience and focus.

How to Set Up Your Buda Ball

– Gently lower the ball down with two hands at a distance of 6 inches/ 15cm.
– Aim for the exact center point of the base.
– When you feel the ball push up, gently let go.

The Back Story

Since the team launched Flyte, the levitating light on Kickstarter in 2015, they have been amazed by the reactions of thousands of peoples’ faces light up as they experience levitation for the first time. They are back on Kickstarter because they love levitation and they want to share the magic with more people all over the world.

How did Buda Ball Begin?

The concept of Buda Ball can be traced back to an earlier question:

What if the mind is powerful enough to change our reality? They decided to put the question to the test and see if our brainwaves could be used to control the levitation of a floating chrome sphere.

Using EEG headsets, the team measured brainwave activity and mapped them to their levitation controller.

During meditation our brainwaves slow down. In a relaxed state, the breath begins to lengthen and the brain waves begin to slow down. The ratio between Alpha and Beta signals and Theta and Delta signals change.

Using a customized algorithm, brainwave signals are processed to detect the “meditative” state of our brain. These signals are programmed to drive a custom-built motorized levitation controller up and down, causing the ball to rise according to our meditative state. The higher the meditative state, the higher the levitation.

They Used Science to Levitate Objects with Our Minds

The Buda Box is one-of-a-kind device that uses brainwaves and an EEG headset to levitate a floating sphere. They are excited to offer the Buda Box pledge on Kickstarter only.

Hello Edison? We reinvented the Bulb

Design magician Simon Morris sure knows how to captivate our hearts with their incredibly beautiful levitating products. Only less than a month ago we were introduced to the unforgettable Story clock that went on to become the Editor’s choice on YD… Now, the Flyte lamp promises to delight even more.

While the Story clock contained an innocuous chrome orb that floated mysteriously above the face of the clock, moving like its hands would, the Flyte lamp does something even more mysterious. Not only does it host an incandescent bulb that flats over its wooden base, the bulb also magically lights up with invisible wireless electrical energy that travels through air from the base till the bulb! A completely surreal experience, the Flyte lamp feels like the lovechild of a Salvador Dali and Nikola Tesla romance. Interestingly enough, it happens to use Tesla’s wireless power system to supply enough electricity to the bulb via air to actually have it illuminate.

Flyte’s magic extends beyond just the lamp too, for when you replace the bulb with your phone by placing it on the base, the base becomes a wireless smartphone charger! (Although it would be nothing short of wizardry if the phone could levitate while charging too!)
It’s no surprise that this magical lamp was voted as one of TIME Magazine’s Best Inventions of the year!

Time is Fleeting, Time is Floating!

I knew time was fleeting, but this one is new to me… and it may easily be the most beautiful timepiece I’ve ever seen. Embodying the serenity of time, the Story clock’s floating chrome orb is a metaphor of our planet, floating gracefully in an orbit around a large star, and therefore of time itself.

Story embodies time, but it isn’t a clock. The way Story works is that you set its movement based on your story. The clock can Depict the passing of time from winter to spring, or days/months until a personal goal. The Story acts as a reminder and a physical manifestation of time passing by. It can count minutes, hours, days, or even years.

Story ushers in a new sort of appreciation for time and timepieces. It isn’t about Swiss movements, or sapphire crystals. The levitating orb’s movement across the wooden base is nothing short of captivating, making you forget time, but still being a reminder that time is passing by. Story looks outwardly simple, but is incredibly layered (both metaphorically, and internally), and that’s why we love it. The body is a plain wooden disc, available in ash and walnut finishes. Atop this sits a chrome orb, majestically and magnetically levitating above the wood. The orb orbits the periphery of the wooden disc with a certain calmness that inspires awe and draws one closer to it. The wooden disc comes with a back-light that gives the Story a beautiful halo/aura when mounted on the wall. Also embedded within the wooden disc is an LED matrix that lights up through the wood surface, displaying the exact time or date at certain intervals.

The Story is devoid of any controls that would add clutter to its form. Instead, it’s controlled by an app that allows you to configure the Story in any way you see fit. Instead of using it as a clock, the Story encourages you to use it to depict the journey of time that has a specific meaning to you. The app allows you to set the Story in three modes. A journey mode, for longer time periods (9 months to the birth of a child, or countdown to a family vacation), a clock mode that allows it to behave like a timepiece, and a timer, for small goals. While the orb displays the passing of time in a poetic manner, the LED matrix can be configured to display exact times or dates whenever needed.

There’s a beauty to the Story that brings back the joy of watching time pass by, a simple joy that we saw last with the cuckoo clock. The Story can be wall mounted, or even kept slanted, or horizontally. Either which way the floating orb, aptly called the Storyteller, moves in its invisible orbit, inspiring happiness and calmness, and reminding us that time isn’t something you wear on your wrist or keep in your pocket. It’s the thing that moves planets, creating years, months, days, and moments worth remembering.
