FlipBooKit: A Kit to Make Your Very Own Mechanical Flipbook

I love flipbooks. They just have this classic and nostalgic feel to them that makes them so special, both to the creator and to the spectators of the moving art that they hold within their pages. Now bringing mechanical flipbooks to the mainstream are kinetic artists Mark Rosen and Wendy Marvel.

FlipbookitMark and Wendy created a series of motorized flipbooks last year, which became such huge hits after they were released to an adoring audience. Now they’re back with their flipbooks, but this time they’re giving everyone a chance to create their own masterpieces using this unique art format through FlipBooKit. These little mechanical wonders are available in either hand-cranked or motorized versions.

FlipBooKit is currently up for funding on Kickstarter. For a minimum pledge of $43(USD), you can get your very own kit with includes a vintage-looking flipbook shell, 30 flip panels, you-print-it printer sheets, a pre-printed trotting horse animation, a single hub, and assembly tools and on-line step-by-step instructions and flipbookit creation tools. A pledge of $66 to $76 lands you one of the first of the motorized versions of the FlipBooKit, dubbed the MOTO-FLIP. (Doesn’t that sound like a phone from the 1990s? – Ed.)

They begin shipping out this December, so they’d totally make a cool Christmas gift for both budding artists and art enthusiasts.

Motorized Electric Roller Skates

electric skates 650x444 Motorized Electric Roller Skates
Remember when you actually had to push with your legs to use roller skates? Now with a little something we call “electricity” you can have Electric Skates Motorized Electric Roller Skates and cruise around on skates without actually doing any work. An 80 watt motor in each skate moves you along at up to 8mph in skates that strap on over your regular shoes (men sizes 6-14, ladies 7-15.5).

A wireless remote control is used to both stop with the electronic brakes and go. You can also drag the heel stopper to slow down. The rechargeable batteries in each skate provide up to 40 minutes of continual power, enough to go about 6 miles. Removable training wheels are included. Now they do cost quite a bit more than roller skates ($699) but for convenient electronic transportation that you can fit in your bag when you’re not using them, you’d be hard pressed to find something better.

VizTools reveals HandiZoom video accessory for Canon DSLRs
Wanna shoot really serious video of the sidewalk on your DSLR, but can't get along with those dicey standard controls? Then maybe VizTools has a solution -- or at least a working prototype it's readying for NAB. The HandiZoom can be operated with only one hand and does motorized zoom with adjustable speed settings, as well as various other primary controls. It hooks up to compatible Canon DSLRs using USB and a rail system, with the aim of making the camera feel more like a traditional news shooter. Check out the video after the break, and then maybe throw down a few more pennies to pair it with one of these.
