Mercedes Getting All Domestic On us

benz_01

The likelihood of Mercedes-Benz pursuing the home appliance industry is very low… but that doesn’t mean we can’t ask “What if?!”. PDF HAUS explores what we might expect from the automaker were they to put out a series of goodies for the kitchen.

Following the brand’s slogan, “the best or nothing,” this collection of toaster, coffeemaker and kettle deliver lux aesthetics with premium functionality. True to the Benz design language, they aren’t lacking frill and make a bold (nonetheless elegant) statement in your kitchen.

A Chic Twist on the Sewing Machine

vifa_01

You expect your clothes to be stylish, so why not the machine that’s used to make them?! PDF HAUS explores this idea by applying the design language of Vifa, a high-end audio maker, to a modern sewing machine.

Clad in Vifa’s signature, special-woven textile Kvadrat cover, the look is warm and inviting in contrast with its minimalist control features. Perfect for any clothes maker who values Nordic design or simply wants their tools to look as good as the clothes they make!

A Fan of Good Design!

braun_fan_1

PDF Haus are back once again with their design hybrids. This time it’s Braun and its take on a standing fan. What if Braun made a standing fan, sounds like quite a plausible question, to be honest. Nevertheless, channeling Braun’s design style in a way is trying to attain Design Nirvana I believe, so the Standing Fan concept by DongOh Hwang and PDF Haus does achieve something truly unique.

The fan’s no-nonsense yet aesthetic styling shows how closely Dieter Rams’ ten principles have been listened to and followed. And the fact that I draw similarities between this fan, and Apple’s styling (because we all know of the Braun/Apple relationship, right?), just goes to prove what a great job PDF Haus has done!

This Audi takes care of emissions!

audi_air_cleaner

The guys at PDF Haus know how to keep us entertained with product/brand crossovers. They gave us the Vespa coffee machine, a Dyson coffee machine, a Bose air conditioner, and to be honest, they all look pretty dope! The next target on their list seems to be Audi. The product, however, isn’t a car, but nevertheless, it transports you to a much more enjoyable place…air-quality-wise. You guessed it, the Audi air cleaner is a vertical air-purifying unit that has a more sculpted art-piece demeanor than that of a home appliance. Makes sense, given all Audi’s cars have very powerful aesthetics, making them some of the most elegantly beautiful automobiles in the business! Now imagine that sensitivity towards beauty, but in an air-purifier. Or just scroll down and admire the beauty of the Audi air cleaner by Kim Hyeon Seok and PDF Haus!

Hey Vespa, you still make scooters?

vespa_purifier_1

You remember the time when some rather adventurous designers tried imagining what it would be like if Vespa made a camera? Well now I ask you this. What if Vespa entered the water purifier business? The Vespa water purifier’s pretty retro-cool that way, and I’m really digging it! I love the color variants paying homage to Italian landscapes. Plus the leather trim on top really hits the sweet spot! Also, extra points for the tire inspired pattern on the

Can I just say… I like how this is becoming a thing, adapting random products to the Vespa brand, because personally I love Vespa’s design language!

What if a Coffee brand made Hairdryers?

dolcegusto_hairdryer_1

For men?? It seems to be hairdryer week here at Yanko, but I’m not complaining! Let’s focus on the title again. It seems absurd for Nescafe Dolce Gusto (a coffee machine series) to suddenly make hairdryers, and that too exclusively for men. This, however, is a clever exercise practiced by designers who try to channel a brand’s ‘visual semantics’ into their products (Visual semantics is all about those visual elements that make a product belong to a brand. You could instantly recognize a Nivea product even if Nivea weren’t written on it).

The Nescafe Dolce Gusto hairdryer does its job of channeling the brand’s design language into a product that seems unthinkable in relation to the brand. That’s the challenge. With its bold Black vs Metallic color palette (and a signature hint of red), the concept hairdryer captures the brand colors really well. Even the usage of spherical elements in the design seems to echo with Dolce Gusto’s style… and what better way to end it than with a few delicious looking color variants?!

The People’s Appliances

vw_01

The word Volkswagen means the “people’s car” and the automaker has provided just that – accessible luxury (albeit with a casual edge). Just for fun, the VW brand identity was applied to a few common kitchen appliances and that’s also exactly how you might describe them as well! They’re utilitarian, each with a straightforward no-frills interface, yet playful with vibrant coloring and interesting shapes. Das appliance!
