Coulda, Shoulda, WOOD-a!

Maple Set investigates an alternative emotional response to everyday kitchen knives! The project was undertaken as an exploration of unique materials and visual combinations of an industry stale with repetitive designs. No matter how you slice and dice it, this collection is one like no other!

The designers of Maple Set wanted to look at kitchen knives from a new perspective. They focused on the essence of a knife – that key component that people think about when considering a knife. They isolated the blade as that defining component and designed around it as the highlight of the product.

Reducing the size and visual weight of the blade turned it into a sliver of polish and refinement. From there, the designers looked at other kitchen tools and felt that the warmth of wood made it a great material in that context. The stark contrast of materials worked well to highlight the smaller blade and blend the body in with its surroundings. The result is a beautiful product that breaks the mould of traditional thinking on an everyday product.

Pop-up Tableware: Two-Dimensional Dining

It’s hard to have a decent meal when you’re traveling or are spending extended periods of time outdoors, where you might not have access to tableware and basic utensils like a spoon and a fork.

Pop Up Tableware 620x287magnify

The designer behind Pop-up Tableware aims to change that with this relatively simple but ingenious concept. In its unfolded version, the Pop-up Tableware looks just like an A4-sized folder.

Once it is opened, a hexagonal bowl pops up. A spoon and fork can be removed from the folder, which also serves as a place mat. With a few quick folds, the spoon and fork are transformed into three-dimensional utensils.

Sugar Skull Spoon Adds A Macabre Flair To Your Morning Coffee

sugar-skull-spoon-2

There’s really not much to say here. It’s a sugar spoon, like the ones you use to scoop sugar into your coffee. Only this one has the shape of a skull stamped out of it. Neat-o. It does this cool sugar skull thing when you scoop some out. We’re not sure what setting or occasion would call for something like this (it’s too late for Halloween this year), but we can imagine there are people who’ll get a kick out of it regardless. It’s £8 ($13) for yours, on the more-than-fully-funded Kickstarter.

First Date Cutlery: So You Can Focus on Your Date, Not Your Food

I’m sure you’ve gone on first dates before. And I’m sure you’ve learned the hard way that first dates usually go worse the more you like the person you’re with. Most dates involve eating a meal – and where there’s food, there’s bound to be accidents – usually the messy kind.

With this in mind, Cristina Guardiola redesigned your typical utensils to come up with First Date Cutlery that’s guaranteed to get you through that first date without using the wrong knife or using the dessert spoon for your soup.

first date cutlery 1 620x411magnify

Cristina explains that the set adheres “directly to appropriate advice in Debrett’s Etiquette, enhancing the prospect of correct use and diminishing that of an unfortunate faux-pas.” So with etiquette worries out of the way, you should be safe, right?

The soup spoon encourages you to drink from the proper side of the spoon, thus reducing messy spills, while the knife and fork are magnetic, which allows you to place them neatly on the plate so you can take breaks to chat with your date.

The dessert spoon that comes with the set offers up a little reward too, as it was apparently “made for two people sharing one dish.” Well, I honestly think that’s moving a little too fast for comfort, but hey, I’m not one to judge.

Soup Straws Adds Suction As A Way To Enjoy Ramen Noodles

soup-straws

There is a right and a wrong way to eat certain foods. Ramen noodles are meant to be picked up with chopsticks and slurped. That, fun as it is, doesn’t sit well with many wet-chin-averse Westerners, so Julian Lechner has created Soup Straws. These are hollow chopsticks with a series of holes at the tip to channel that tasty broth all the way up to your mouth, without making a messy detour through your beard. It’s a simple enough idea, but is sadly one that hasn’t been turned into a commercially available product just yet. We’re not sure what’s holding Justin back from Kickstarting this, but with a bit of effort, should be simple enough to do. Or, well, now that the idea is out in the wild and no patent on the design presumably exists, maybe someone else can get on it?

The Eggstractor

I’m totally trademarking that name BTW! Separating egg whites from the yolk can take some serious skill! That is… unless you have this modern whisk by Ivan Zhang. By slightly modifying the shape with a circular indention, the whisk catches the yolk, allowing the white to drip down. The whisk can then be used as normal to beat the eggs or stir your mixture. It makes separating effortless and better yet, keeps your hands clean of egg goo!

Hang Around Kitchen Utensils Hang On Your Pots and Pans for Added Convenience

Hang Around

Cooking is usually loads of fun, but preparation and clean-up can be a total drag. I find that half the stuff I need to wash are plates and trays where I propped various utensils like ladles and spatula on in between stirring and flipping whatever it is I’m cooking. It’s a waste of resources, but it’s either that or put the utensil on the kitchen counter, and that’s an even bigger no-no for me.

If you’re dealing with this first-world problem yourself, then you’ll be pleased to hear about he Hang Around kitchen utensils that might just eliminate this issue once and for all. Each utensil is made from wood and has a small slit by the handle, so you can perch it on the edge of the pan or pot after using it. That way, you can easily grab it when you need it again without dribbling any sauce or other foodstuff onto your counters or onto spare plates.

The Hang Around kitchen utensils were created by Kibisi for Muuto. They’re available from the Fancy for $45.

A Knife So Pretty You’re Not Going To Want To Use It

Knife-by-Michele-Daneluzzo

Knives are often utilitarian tools, meant to cleave, slice, skin, filet or chop your food into forms you’ll feel better about shoving down your piehole. But knives can be beautiful too, as demonstrated by the Primitive Knife, by designer Michele Daneluzzo. He drew inspiration from the knives used by early humans, such as flint tools, and is formed from one petal-shaped piece of steel. And it just looks great, in our opinion. The Primitive has no handle, instead relying on a ridge that runs along the top part of the blade to allow holding. It’s available in blast or polished steel, and is stored upright in a stand that comes included. It’s being produced by a company called Del Ben, but navigating that Flash site is so 2005 that it’s giving us headaches. Thus a price can’t be found. By looks alone, we’d say you can’t afford it.
