Hatching Dinosaur Candle: Phoenix Raptor

We’ve seen Pokéball soaps and bath bombs with toys hidden inside them. Firebox came up with a similar gimmick, but with a candle and an actual, albeit, extinct animal.

The Hatching Dinosaur Candle measures about 5.5″x 5.5″x 6.2″. As it burns, it will reveal a porcelain figurine of a baby velociraptor. The raptor will be covered with soot as the candle continues to waste away, but you can easily wipe the little fella clean.

Firebox is selling the candle for ~$45 (USD) each, but it won’t ship until 2016.

Feathered Dinosaur Discovered related to Jurassic World’s Velociraptor

Suddenly dinosaurs have feathers. This is a rather new thing. Today the University of Edinburgh announced that a new feathered dinosaur has been discovered. The  newly identified species of...

12 Disney Princesses as Raptors From Jurassic World

Snow White

Disney princesses are always hot, as in trendy. Velociraptors and Jurassic Park? Nothing’s hotter right now. Combine the two together? Why the hell not?!

Artist Laura Cooper decided that after watching Jurassic World (which is the first movie with two weekends of more than $100 million at the box office) came up with the idea, thinking how cool the dinosaurs were which led her to thinking that Ariel, Mulan and Tiana need some sort of reptilian makeover.

Aurora (Sleeping Beauty)

Merida (Brave)

Rapunzel (Tangled)

Tiana (Princess & the Frog)

Belle (Beauty and the Beast)

Jasmin (Aladdin)

Mulan

Pocahontas

Ariel (The Little Mermaid)

Anna & Elsa (Frozen)

Snow White

Cinderella

Hat tip:

This isn’t the first great idea about giving Disney Princesses an alternative look. There’s this one, giving them a more accurate look considering the period in which the characters first appeared, and there’s also this fantastic idea of giving them an Indian wedding remodeling.

Own an Actual Velociraptor Claw

With the massive success of Jurassic World, prehistoric creatures are once again the talk of dinnertime conversations around the globe. While you could just settle for some CGI dinosaurs and velociraptors, why not go for the real thing? Or at least a claw.

Yes, that’s right. This 70+ million year-old curiosity is an actual fossilized claw from a real velociraptor, found in Mongolia. It can be yours for the low, low price of just $12,500(USD) over at Astro Gallery of Gems. While you’re over there, be sure to check out some of their other amazing fossils, including the Edmontosaurus foot shown below:

I bet with the right geneticist and billions of research dollars you could use these to clone your own prehistoric army – or open an amusement park.

Build Your Own Paper Velociraptor

Check out this Kickstarter campaign for KitRex, which is basically a 3D paper velociraptor that you build yourself. 3D paper velociraptor? I’m in. You build the googly-eyed dinosaur by folding and tabbing together specially cut pieces of high-quality Bristol board. It balances on its feet. You can put googly eyes on it, feathers, and what ever you want.

This project came about because of a homework assignment in which creator Lisa Glover was asked to research a manufacturing process and demonstrate it in a unique way. So she researched industrial origami, and in about 50 hours she had designed, cut, and built a wearable 15-ft long velociraptor out of cardboard (shown above). When she decided to wear it to a costume party, needless to say she was the star of the evening. While you can’t buy her velociraptor costume, you can own this smaller, 3-foot-long version of the paper velociraptor.

KitRex is starting out by making paper raptors, but hopes to go on to make a complete paper menagerie of dinosaurs, including the mighty T. Rex.

The project has already made more than 12 times its original $8,000(USD) fundraising goal, because people love them some dinosaurs. If you want one for yourself, pledge at least $20 over on Kickstarter by April 29.

WD’s 1TB VelociRaptor HDD gets reviewed: substantial gains, moderate price

Image

Western Digital has expanded its line of desktop-grade VelociRaptors to include a 1TB model that's available now for $320, but those kidding themselves with that whole "250GB is enough" thing can get in for as little as $160. Top-level specs include a 10,000RPM spindle rate and a SATA 6Gb/s interface housed within a 3.5-inch heat sink -- useful for lessening the burden of the drive's thermal output on the rest of the machine. Storage Review's tests reveal that sequential read and write transfer speeds top out around 206MB/s, thermal dissipation is excellent with low power consumption, and that random access has improved compared with it's 600GB predecessor. They consider the new HDD to be a "very appealing value proposition" and "a blend of high performance, storage, capacity, and low cost."

Hot Hardware discovered virtually identical numbers with their tests, but wasn't quite as forgiving when it comes to the cost-per-GB versus 7200RPM hard drives. However, they call this VelociRaptor the "fastest HDD yet" at "nearly double the capacity of previous" model. You can find even more stats and impressions to chew on at the sources below.
