THE OPPORTUNITY

GE Appliance’s Industrial Design Organization is a collaboration of Industrial and Interaction Designers, Consumer Insights Researchers, R&D Engineers, User Experience Research Specialists, and Model Makers. Interns are given the freedom and responsibility to contribute to the design team and experience every phase of the product development cycle through production launch.

ABOUT THE POSITION

GE Appliances is hiring multiple Industrial Design Interns at Appliances Headquarters in Louisville KY.
• 12 Month Duration

• Paid Internship ($14-$21/Hour + the option to choose between full-furnished housing or $675/month taxable housing stipend)

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are actively seeking a Junior Industrial Designer. As a core member of level’s growing ID studio, the Junior ID will be tasked with a diverse and dynamic set of responsibilities, including concept development and execution for client projects as well as building the level portfolio through competition and conceptual work. In addition to ID contribution, the Junior ID will help to create a positive studio atmosphere and culture at level. The Junior ID reports directly to the Founders.

RESPONSIBILITIES

– Creating original and appropriate design work for level and its clients

– Communicate and present design issues with level’s clients’ personnel and vendors

– Level presentation work: rendering, image gathering, PowerPoint, supervising model-shop and photographer

– 3D CAD (Alias 3D / Rhino 3D / SolidWorks) + Photoshop: 3D geometry, rendering and adjustment of renderings

– 2D Skills: 2D Photoshop, Illustrator, (InDesign), PowerPoint, hand sketching, etc.

– Basic model-shop skills: rough foam models and 3D printer set-up and clean-up

– Answer incoming phone calls, take messages when necessary

– Assist in promotional activities – level PR/WEB work, as needed

– Keeping things in order: model-shop, archive design work and general office tasks and ‘tidiness’

– Proactive, positive and pleasant work attitude while working at level.

REQUIREMENTS

– Bachelors Degree in Industrial Design

– Experience in a similar, creative studio environment

– Ability to create or learn new processes

– Design and visualize versions of existing products by applying color, texture and materials

Bespoke Design

The Bespoke Design Intern creates and steers desirable and profitable design features as part of existing and new model developments in line with Bespoke project and brand requirements. Working from within the Rolls-Royce Design team the design work is coordinated and managed by the Bespoke Project Team who steer the bespoke business. Design work can be modifications to existing features or from a blank sheet of paper and can derive from customer requests or be pro-actively offered as individual features or part of a Collection Car. Compelling theme development creates a strong framework of desirability for customer and collection cars and there is a need for both 2D graphical and 3D product design skills. Whilst there are specific Colour and Trim Designers within the team an appreciation of color and materials is expected.

Very strong creativity and presentation skills are required using both traditional sketching skills as well as digital techniques (Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator). Self-management skills are needed to work towards practical solutions with demanding deadlines and also to coordinate inputs from others and steer them effectively where necessary. An awareness of differing international cultures is helpful.

Good interpersonal skills (both verbal and written) are required in order to pursue design solutions and ‘sell’ ideas both internally and externally. The Design Intern needs the ability to juggle different demands, sometimes conflicting, whilst delivering attractive and customer focussed design solutions in a timely fashion. There is a need to appreciate technical and packaging issues and concepts must have a high level of practicality as designs move from concept to reality in a short and at times demanding timeframe.

The Intern role will join the team to work on developing design themes for customer cars and new Bespoke features using a combination of sketched images and retouched images from the Rolls-Royce Configurator. There will be further opportunities to be involved in concept feature development and a personally driven project.

Some previous relevant work experience is helpful in a related field. Technical understanding and acumen to work on practical solutions within short time frames and manage time effectively. – Defining and leading the activities required to generate a clear, compelling, and actionable design point of view for the project team.

– Primary content creator responsible for all Design deliverables on the project.

– Collaborating with account mangers and design leads to define and refine scope, brief, and approach to the project.

– Interacting independently with the client to further fuseproject’s design point of view and to support the continuity of design vision throughout the production process.

– Mentoring Level I & II Industrial Designers and Interns.

– Working with HR to identify and recruit talent for the team.

– Ongoing and day-to-day involvement with the client’s engineering, science/R&D, operations, and manufacturing teams.

– Collaborating closely with the product portfolio director leading the European fuse team, supporting the strategic design direction of the portfolio in-line with fuse SF creative leadership.

– Ability to communicate effectively with design teams on a daily base.

REQUIREMENTS

– 5-8 years of relevant experience in marketing, product design/development, brand management, strategic product planning, strategy consulting, or equivalent

– Live, breathe, love design

– Experience with major national or international brands a must

– Consulting agency experience a must

– Deep knowledge of materials, plastic and metal production processes

– Deep understanding of quality control and other techniques for manufacturing

– Willingness to take direction and learn from others

– Passionate thinker about consumer behavior

– Multilingual skills are welcome

RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to: Senior Associates/Associate Directors/Directors
Hours: 10.00 to 19.00
Purpose of role: To be an active and collaborative team member of a dedicated Urban Design team within Zaha Hadid Architects. Depending on experience, have the ability to lead a small team within larger projects.

REQUIREMENTS

Professional
– Masters or postgraduate level education in urban design MAUD, MLAUD in landscape or architecture or equivalent
– Qualified architects preferred (ARB or overseas)
– Fluent understanding of urban design principles
– Experience in preparing urban design frameworks, development frameworks, regeneration, and area-specific masterplans
– Experience of working at the interface between urban design, transport, land use planning, public realm, and landscape
– Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
– Fluency in AutoCAD or MicroStation, Rhinoceros and Maya
– Experience of working on international projects
– Experience of concept and detailed design stages (RIBA work stages A-E)
