Ready, set, brew!!

Kettles that whistle are too conventional. Not to mention, noisy too. What you need is something not just discreet, but classy too. The Flag kettle does its share of theatrics to tell you your drink has brewed. It raises a flag. Now isn’t that just one talented kettle? Who says only mailboxes are allowed to be this awesome with flags?!

The Flag Kettle is the recipient of the Red Dot Award for the year 2015.

World’s Largest LEGO United States Flag: The Stud Spangled Banner

The past week, more than 15,000 visitors at the National Museum of American History helped build the world’s largest LEGO United States flag. It’s made of over 100,000 bricks and measures 9.5ft x 14ft.

LEGO employees Dan and Chris Steininger designed the impressive collaborative artwork. They came up with a simple pattern so that even kids and LEGO newbies could help put it together.

Congrats everyone! Now blow it up with fireworks! Just kidding. The massive flag was actually made not for Independence Day but to celebrate the museum’s newly opened Innovation Wing. ABC News has more about the flag’s construction.

Apple Pirate Flag Replica: It’s Better to Be a Pirate than Join the Navy

Former Apple typeface and graphic designer Susan Kare is selling hand-painted replicas of the Jolly Roger, a pirate flag that she and her Apple colleagues made back in 1983. According to former Apple programmer Andy Hertzfeld, the flag is a reference to Jobs telling them,“It’s better to be a pirate than join the Navy”, an assurance that the Macintosh team would remain tightly knit and independent despite the company’s growth.

The image below shows one of Susan’s replicas on the left; the original flag is shown in the middle and on the right. Even though the original flag is nowhere to be found, Susan was the one who painted it, so it’s safe to say that her replicas are as close to the real thing as it gets. The big difference is that the original flag had an Apple decal for an eyepatch whereas the replicas will be all paint.

Like all things Apple, the replica flags are expensive. Susan is selling 3’x 5′ replicas for $1,900 (USD) and 4’x 6′ replicas for $2,500 on her website. Check out Andy’s story on Folklore to find out more about the flag.

Fly the Flag from Super Mario Bros.!

As much as I loved playing through the pipes and snacking on mushrooms in Super Mario Bros., there’s nothing quite as satisfying as making that perfect jump onto the flag at the end of a level. Now you can live out that part of the game in real life, thanks to this life-size flag made to look just like the one from the game.

It’s made by James Bit, the same guy who brought us those fighting game wall decals and the equally awesome Zelda fireplace and secret passage floor art.

The flag is a dead-ringer for the one at the end of each level in Super Mario Bros., complete with a big pixelated green mushroom on a white background. Each one measures 2′ x 3′ and is made from durable nylon, so you can actually fly these outdoors in the wind. I so want to see these flying on every house in my neighborhood.

You can get your hands on the Super Mario Bros. flag over on Etsy for $50 (USD). I really want him to make the version with Bowser on it next.

James advises: “Sliding down them is not recommended unless you have 6, 3, or 1 second left on the clock.” And if you don’t know what that means, what sort of NES fanboy or girl are you?

Assassin’s Creed III U.S. Flag, I Pledge Allegiance to This Game

A flag Tweeted out by Jeff Gerstman, may cause at least a bit of minor controversy. The Assassin’s Creed-branded flag is being used to promote the upcoming Assassin’s Creed III game, which is set during the American Revolution. The problem is that it apparently violates the  U.S. Flag Code.

Assassins Creed 3As Eric Limer from Geekosystem points out, however, the Flag Code, even though a Federal law, is basically useless since the Supreme Court has ruled that punitive enforcement of the Flag Code would be unconstitutional. I only bring it up because Eric did and because this is sure to upset some of those die-hard people who feel that the flag should never ever be dirtied, burnt, left unattended for more than 5 minutes, used as gift wrap, or in this case, used to promote a video game.

Me, I don’t have a problem with it. I think it is an awesome way to promote the game and it looks great. You have to keep it all in perspective. I tip my hat to them and look forward to the game.
