Case & Watch Famicom Clock: Choptimer

Columbus Circle’s Famicom-themed clock cover plate for the New Nintendo 3DS was one of the coolest video game accessories I saw last year. Now those of us who don’t own the handheld can get in on the nostalgia with the new Case & Watch, the cover plate’s standalone version.

The Case & Watch looks and works exactly like the Plate & Watch, but it has a built-in stand and magnets so you’ll easily find a place for it.

You can order the Case & Watch from Japan Trend Shop for $39 (USD).

New Nintendo 3DS Game & Watch Clock Cover Plate: Plate & Watch

Japanese shop Columbus Circle must have realized that the New Nintendo 3DS’ cover plates don’t just have to be decorative. Its Retro Plate & Watch is an awesome clock front plate for the New 3DS. Not only is it functional, it looks like the 3DS’ ancestor too.

The Retro Plate & Watch tells the time and temperature and also has timer and alarm functions, all presented through a Game & Watch style interface.

You can pre-order the Retro Plate & Watch from Amazon Japan for ~$24 (USD). I wonder if you can mod two Game Boy Micros onto a New 3DS.

DIY Game & Watch: Make & Play

When he was a kid, Instructables member Andrew Hannay had a 1980 Nintendo Game & Watch game called Vermin, which was also released by Time Out under the title Exterminator. He sold the handheld on eBay, but lately he’s been itching to play it and other Game & Watch games. Since those are hard to find these days, Andrew decided he’d make his own Game & Watch system.

Andrew used the Microchip PIC18F4550 8-bit microcontroller as the brains of his retro gaming device, while the LCD display is from a Nokia 5110. He used the case from another Game & Watch game then painted it to make it look like the Vermin’s case. He botched the paint work but I think it ended up looking like an old gadget anyway. He then remade his childhood game in C using MPLAB.

The best part about Andrew’s toy is that unlike Game & Watches he’s not limited to one game. He can emulate old ones or even make his own games and load them on the device. Head to Instructables to find out more about the custom made handheld.

Angry Birds Lobbed to Another Platform

Angry Birds is the new Tetris. It’s everywhere: phones, tablets, desktop computers, handheld videogame systems and even on a browser. Illustrator and graphic designer Giorgio Cantú imagines what it would be like if the game appeared on its own Nintendo Game & Watch too:

Rovio wouldn’t approve of it though. No way to place in-game purchases or ads. Slingshot to Cantú’s Flickr page for high resolution versions of the image or fly to his website for more of his work.
