WiiVision Is the Nintendo Wii Handheld of Our Dreams

The Nintendo GameCube and Wii both offered up lots of fun and classic video games. But neither console was particularly portable, so the only way you could play those games on the go would be via software emulation. But games rarely play to perfection or at full speed through emulation, and the right way to do it is with original hardware if possible.

Shank Mods and GmanModz teamed up to make a truly impressive handheld gaming system using the brains of an actual Nintendo Wii. This allows the system to play any Wii or GameCube game, and at full speed. It also can play Virtual Console, WiiWare and homebrew apps. The design of the WiiVision was inspired by a 2011 GameCube portable build by Tchay.

To fit all the components inside the case, they had to carefully trim the main circuit board from the Wii, and wired it up to an LCD screen, speakers, and control buttons. And with the help of 3D printing and custom circuit boards, they were able to make it super neat and tidy inside. Games are loaded onto the system via a tiny USB flash drive, and it’s capable of supporting external controllers.

Shank had previously built another nifty Wii/GameCube portable called the PiiWii Pocket, but it ultimately melted its case because it accidentally turned on inside a carrying case. Not one to give up on his dream portable, he went back to the drawing board, and teamed up with his friend to build a whole new system. I like the styling of this handheld even more, as it looks even more like something Nintendo might have made themselves.

Amazing work, Shank and Gman!

Vonado Upgrades Your LEGO Builds with Custom LED Lighting

LEGO makes a huge number of really cool kits. But if you want to make your LEGO constructions just that much more awesome, check out these lighting kits from Vonado. The New York-based company custom designs lighting sets for off-the-shelf LEGO kits, giving models an even more finished, dynamic, and engaging look.

They’ve made dozens of LED light kits that pair up with LEGO sets of all kinds. Whether you’re into city building, pop culture, cars, or space sets, there’s something for everyone in their shop. The modular lighting parts are designed to fit between or underneath transparent bricks rather than being built into the bricks themselves.

The lighting kits start for as little as about $14 for Wall-E (21303), all the way up to $92 for the Star Wars UCS Super Star Destroyer (10221). There are plenty of colorful sets for you to choose from, and almost surely something for all kinds of LEGO fans. Keep in mind that these are just lighting kits, and you’ll still need to purchase or already own the LEGO set they pair up with.

Be sure to stop by the Vonado website and check them all out. They also make a handful of sweet custom LEGO MOC sets – though they’re not illuminated, and also sell some very professional looking LEGO display cases.

Guy Builds Minecraft Inside a Chest Inside of Minecraft

Despite its primitive looks, MineCraft is an immensely capable game-building tool. Over the years, I’ve seen some insanely creative and complicated levels built using the game’s blocky elements. Recently, one enterprising MineCraft fan created a really amazing thing – it’s a playable version of the game that lives inside of a chest inside of the game.

Simply walk up to the chest that SethBling built, and when you open it up, you’re greeted with MineCraft within MineCraft. You can select and place blocks, craft tools, and mine inside of the game inside the game if you want to get really crazy.

If you’d like to try it for yourself, you can download the MineCraft in a Chest data pack here. Cool idea, Seth!

Bentley Continental GT Fitted with Tank Treads

YouTube channel AcademeG found a cheap Bentley Continental GT (are they ever actually cheap?) and created this monster off-road version. In this case it probably was cheap since it had so many problems with the engine.

For starters, the luxobarge needed new turbos for the twin-turbo W12 engine. So the guys at Russian vlog AcademeG replaced the engine with a Japanese-market Toyota 4.3L V8 engine. Then they ditched the original Bentley frame and drivetrain. But what they did next makes them my personal heroes. The body was placed onto a custom frame with tank treads. They call it the Ultratank.

This thing is badass, although it does have some problems. The engine doesn’t like to operate at the low rpms that the treads prefer and it has issues cornering. Who cares? Just run over stuff in your rich people tank and stop complaining.

They do have a point though – if the vehicle corners too hard, the treads come off. Oh, and there are no brakes. To slow down you crank the steering wheel back and forth which slows the inside tread as the vehicle starts to turn. I can live with that. I just want to run stuff over. Check out the full Ultratank build log on YouTube.

Modders turn Nintendo Switch into a full-fledged Linux tablet

For all of its Nintendo customizations, the Switch is ultimately a tablet running a garden variety NVIDIA Tegra processor -- and that means it can potentially handle the same software as other mobile devices. To prove that point, the fail0verflow te...

Super Mario 64 Gets Online Multiplayer Mod, Chaos Ensues

Super Mario 64 is still considered one of the greatest video games of all time. Its combination of great 3D platforming and innovative control and camera scheme was pretty groundbreaking when it first came out back in 1996. But one thing Super Mario 64 was not was a multiplayer game. Until now.

We don’t have much in the way of details at this point, but a group of N64 hackers have been beta testing this customized version of the game which adds a true online multiplayer mode. The result isn’t exactly what Shigeru Miyamoto envisioned, I’m sure, but it does look like fun, with multiple characters working in a sort of improvised co-op multiplayer to work through the levels:

It’s more than a bit chaotic having all of those characters on-screen at the same time. It’s almost like a glitchy level from Super Smash Bros.

I’m not sure if or when we’ll be able to download the mod for ourselves, but keep an eye out on Kaze Emanaur’s YouTube and Patreon channels for more info.
