Edges2cats Turns Doodles Into Creepy Cat Photos

A new bit of software has turned up that is both cool and a bit creepy. The software is called pix2pix and it can take a source sketch or image and then build a rough photographic representation of it. The Edges to Photo capability lets you draw a doodle of an object and then turns those doodles into pictures using images cobbled together from photographs of similar objects. One specific variant of the tool is called edges2cats, and it transforms your cute kitty doodles into some really disturbing critters.

After you submit your doodle, the resulting photo is a composite using parts from cat pictures presumably found online. Originally you had to download the software and write your own front-end code for it, but now you can play with it for yourself online over at affinelayer.com, thanks to Christopher Hesse.

Sure, the photos are downright weird, but it’s still fun to see your drawings become… well… slightly more realistic cats. There are also online tools for doodling shoes and handbags, which seems ever stranger to me.

15 Awesome Star Wars: The Force Awakens Behind the Scenes Photos

Force Awakens Behind the Scenes Photo

Now that Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens has shattered every box office record and there’s no more need for secrecy, behind the scenes photos are coming out to the delight of the movie’s and series fans, who can never have enough of the Star Wars universe.

Anything special? Not too much. A little bit of Stormtroopers standing around, Maz Kanata’s cantina, a lot of Millennium Falcon, a little bit of Finn, one nice resistance photo and a lot of the guys who make the film but aren’t really known standing around the set.

But it’s still cool. Unlike the current trend (which happens with a lot of geek-oriented films), which is bashing the film due to the “honeymoon” period being over, we still think it’s an awesome movie: Fun, really fun, and not filled with the BS from the prequel trilogy (who I still like, but is completely unnecessary to watch in order to understand a single thing about this film).

The International Space Station at Bedtime: In Space, No One Can Hear You Sleep

European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Alexander Gerst has been living in the International Space Station in the past five months. He’ll be back here later this month, but he sent his Halloween treat on time: photos of the ISS’ research center at bedtime. Turn the lights down and start playing the Alien theme.

Nope, those are not space scarecrows. And there are no people inside the suits either. I’m not sure if there’s anything else in them though. According to the ESA, “[t]he six astronauts on the weightless research centre live by GMT, and generally sleep at the same time.” That must have left Alex free to roam around and take pictures of the research center. That also gave him at least one frightening sight. Here’s what he said about the picture below: “You wouldn’t believe what I saw when I floated into our galley module in the dark of the night…”

But he lived to tell the tale, and took a selfie with the empty spacesuit:

Alex also shared these equally creepy shots of the research center, dark but for the serpentine and pale blue glow of the station’s machinery.

The spook is out there. Strap into a Power Loader and tread carefully to the ESA’s website for a few more of Alex’s photographs. Happy Space Halloween to everyone at the ISS!

1-Hour Photo App Makes You Wait For Your Selfies

1 Hour Photo

In this day and age, it’s all about instant gratification. From same-day delivery and courier service to instant messaging and email, you can now get what you want in as little time possible. Digital photography is another example. When people had to use film, pictures were shot few and far in between because film costs money, and it costs more money to get the roll developed. That’s in contrast to today, where people snap away whenever and wherever as their memory cards allow.

Changing the pace is the 1-Hour Photo app, which, as the name suggests, lets you view the photo that you’ve taken after one hour has passed. A black-and-white film emulation is applied to the photo, enhancing it and giving it that old-world feel. What the app aims to do, though, is keeping those moments special, without the distraction of reviewing photos as they’re being taken.

By the time people check out the shots, the moment will have been a memory, albeit one captured beautifully. You can download 1-Hour Photo on iTunes for free.
