Modern Art: Explained

arte-moderno-comic

File this one under “pop culture”, or even just “culture”, but we’ve come across a handy image that we’d like to share with you all, even if it has absolutely nothing to do with tech or gadgets. It’s a drawing by John Atkinson, and it does a decent job of explaining the fundamental differences between the different types of art styles. From cubism to surrealism, this little guide will help you sound a little more cultured next time your girlfriend drags you to the museum.

A Frankenstein Light Switch

frankenstein_light_switch_1

Wanna add a bit of flair to your living space? How about the Frankenstein Light Switch? It’s a plastic cover for your light switch that ends up making it look like a giant Frankenstein style circuit breaker. It comes in single or double switch versions, for $10 or $15. Comes unpainted, so it’ll fit any decor. Unfortunately, high demand means you may have to wait up to 10 weeks to get yours, but if you have access to a 3D printer, the file is also available for you to print at home.

Some Guy Makes A Batsuit Out Of Tree Bark

bark-batman

Artists make pretty things; we get to look at them, say “gee whiz, look at that”, and then once we’re done, we just move on. That’s what we’re expecting will happen when you read about French artist Christophe Guinet’s work here. It’s a Batman suit made from tree bark, and well, it looks pretty neat-o.

Together with Warner Bros. France and the Splendens Factory, the artist has designed the iconic batman suit primarily out of tree bark, vegetal moss, lichen and fungus. A foam mold of the batman suit and helmet has been carefully wrapped and covered in layers of tree bark, forming the suit’s distinctive pointed ears, opening for the mouth and nose, and defensive shoulder covering.

Why? Apparently it’s Christophe’s thing, to appropriate plant life and create familiar objects. We suppose that in art, that’s as good a reason as any.

Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver BBQ Tongs

sonic_screwdriver_tongs_1

Ok, so I’m going to admit something: I’ve never watched a single episode of Doctor Who. Not one. I know, I know, I’m an incult, a barbarian, a good for nothing, I know. But, this means I have no idea what these Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver BBQ Tongs are, or why they’re cool. I’m guessing some character in the show has them, or something like them, and now you can flip your burgers with the same type of props. Awesome.

Featuring metal tongs, a heatproof plastic handle, and storage case moulded to look just like the 11th and 12th Doctors tool of choice, theres even the iconic sonic screwdriver sound effect from the show to add some extra cool to proceedings. A must-have not just for the millions Whovians out there, but also for anyone who just wants to liven up their BBQ! Tongs measure approximately 22 1/2 long. Requires 2 x AA batteries (included).

So there you have it. For $35 you can pre-order these things, and they’ll ship in September. Just in time for some Fall grillin’.

Dragon Cake Pan Must Be Ours

cake1

With Game of Thrones in full swing, everyone’s thinking of dragons. At least we are, especially when they look as delicious as the cake that comes out of the Dragon Cake Pan pictured above. I mean, if you’re going to go through the trouble of baking a cake, why not make it something to remember? Layers are good, dragons are better. The thing has a 10 1/2″ diameter and is 4″ tall, so that’s a decent sized cake. It’s $24, but could cost twice as much and we’d still consider purchasing it. It’s currently backordered, but Thinkgeek is quoting a 1-3 lead time.

Steel Star Trek Coasters Boldly Go Where No…

startrek_coasters_1

You know… we’re groaning at the thought of having to write yet another pun-filled headline that’s a Star Trek or Star Wars reference. So you get the idea. Here are some coasters with the Star Fleet insignia stamped on them. They come in a set of 5, are 4″ on each side, and are made from 3/16” thick, Food Grade 304 Stainless Steel with a felt backing, so they’ll feel heavy and premium. There are many other ways of keeping your drinks from ruining your tabletop, but very few that proclaim quite as loudly just which brand of nerd you are (and by the way, we mean “nerd” in the best possible way here). The Star Trek Coasters are made by Easy seller ApocalypseFab, and cost $44 for the set.

Squeaky Clean Your Child Will Be With This Yoda-Inspired Bath Towel

star-wars-childs-bath-towel-with-yoda-ears-hoodie-0

If your child runs away from you when the time comes to rub the grime off his body, perhaps a little brainwashing is in order. First, get him to fall in love with the Star Wars franchise. That should be easy enough. Then, introduce him to this awesome bath towel with Yoda ears. Done! He’ll be asking you when he can take a bath, and not the other way around.

It’s made by Etsy seller ‘MiddleBrainedCanvas’, but her page claims it’s currently sold out. However it seems she makes these to order, so you might try your luck anyway. Judging by the price of her other towels, this one should come out to about $28.

That Bike From The TRON Movie Will Soon Be Up For Auciton

Screen Shot 2015-04-02 at 5.23.19 PM

You’re looking at a fully functioning replica of the bike used in the 2010 movie TRON:Legacy. Even if the movie wasn’t exactly a stellar flick, it has spawned countless pop culture references in the half-decade since its release. This particular bike was built for “the Andrews Collection, one of America’s biggest and best car collections, most of which is currently being sold at auction.”

96 volt, direct-drive electric motor with lithium batteries and a computer-controlled throttle, rebound and compression damping with spring-preload front suspension and rigid rear suspension, and front and rear hydraulic brakes. This custom Tron tribute boasts a very low seat height of 28.5 inches, making it easy to ride even at low speeds. The motorcycle is finished in black with a white stripe and boasts an imposing stance to match its performance.

It was only ever ridden around the Andrews Collection’s facilities to ensure it’s still in working order, so it’s in an as-new state. The auction will be held on May 2nd at a Sotheby’s location, with a $25,000-$40,000 starting bid and no reserve. That means you could snatch it for even less… if it just so happens that no one else is interested in it, which seems unlikely.

Hit the jump for a bunch more pics.
