Ghost Pepper Popcorn: Hated by Sphincters Everywhere

If you have ever messed around and eaten a bunch of spicy food, you know that it can cause as much of a burning sensation coming out as it did going in. ThinkGeek has some new popcorn that is made with super-hot ghost peppers, and is sure to cause you far less joy on the way out than on the way in.

How hot are ghost peppers? They were in the 2007 Guinness’s Book of World Records as the hottest chili pepper in the world at 401.5 times hotter than Tabasco sauce. Ouch. I definitely won’t be eating this popcorn.

A jalapeno pepper has a heat rating of 3500 SHU, the ghost pepper on the other hand has a rating of up to 1.4 million SHU. I think the SHU rating comes from the sound you make as you breathe out and fan your mouth trying to put out the flames. Yes, your bung-holio will burn with hatred if you eat this popcorn and the heartburn will melt your chest.

What kind of guy covers his car in popcorn? That would be Jacob Aaron Schroeder, a Minneapolis based artist. Once he popped, he just couldn’t be stopped. Don’t worry, it was done in a jiffy. I don’t know if that’s accurate, but there may be a kernel of truth to that statement. Okay, I’ll stop now.

This guy covered his old Volkswagen in popcorn and then displayed it at the Braunschweig University of Art in Braunschweig, Germany. No word if it also has butter and salt. Obviously the guy loves popcorn. Even the windshield wipers are covered.

The hubcaps too. His wife was probably ticked off when that Netflix movie arrived and they were all out of popcorn.

If you want to make this edible popcorn bowl for yourself just follow the instructions provided by Beth Jackson Klosterboer. She is the one responsible for making this popcorn bowl that is made of popcorn. So how did she make sure that the bowl held together? Beth used white chocolate candy melts as glue, lining the bowl with a mixture of candy melts and popcorn, then she refrigerated it.

Delightfully Obtuse: Contraption Pops Corn One Kernel At A Time

Sometimes you just have to stop asking “why” and enjoy something for what it is. The Oncle Sam pictured above is an elaborate device that pops corn, one kernel at a time. That’s… all it does. It was recently presented by Laurent Beirnaert, Pierre Bouvier and Paul Tubiana as part of the ‘low-tech factory’ exhibition at Designers’ Saturday in Langenthal, Switzerland. When you turn a handle at the bottom, a single kernel falls into a metal cooking receptacle where it is heated in oil, above a candle, until it pops. There’s some salting going on as well. The popped kernel then falls into another glass cup where you can retrieve it and enjoy it. It’s all pretty grandiose, and pretty awesome.

Ok… you’re still wondering “why”. The closest we have to an explanation is this:

The work celebrates and values the means by which a product is created – slowing down a type of manufacture that is usually en masse to a visual spectacle that can be appreciated, acknowledged and savored.

Single Kernel Popcorn Popper: The Opposite of Jiffy Pop

I’ve seen some strange inventions over the years, but this might be one of the strangest. It’s a special device that’s designed to pop popcorn – one kernel at a time.

The Oncle Sam popper was created for ECAL’s Low-Tech Factory show – the same exhibit that brought us the Rocking-Knit Chair. Students Laurent Beirnaert, Pierre Bouvier and Paul Tubiana designed this contraption that individually pops kernels of corn to perfection. Just load up the dispensers with popcorn, oil and salt, light the flame, and turn the crank, and you’ll have a big bowl of popcorn just in time for the movie to be over. Here’s a video of the exciting popping process, in case you can’t visualize that.

It’s all rather ridiculous, I suppose, but after finding out how many calories movie theater popcorn has, it does make me think this might be a little bit more of a healthy alternative.

The Popinator Shoots A Popcorn At Your Mouth On Command

Eating popcorn could become a lot more fun, and a lot more choke-y at the same time. The Popinator is an in-house project from Popcorn, Indiana, a company that sells, well, popcorn. This machine is able to pinpoint your exact location from the sound of your voice using a binaural microphone array, and to shoot a corn projectile into it from up to 15 feet away. It’s. Freaking. Cool.

Although the Popinator is not on the market right now, the company says that if everything lines up, they would definitely like to make it available on the shelves at some point, though for how much and when is unknown.

The Popinator Shoots Popcorn Directly at Your Mouth, One Kernel at a Time

Do you have trouble getting popcorn into your mouthhole? Yeah, I know it can be tricky to reach into the bowl and perfectly align your hand with your mouth to ensure the popped kernel ends up in the right spot. Well, there’s finally a solution to this first-world problem, courtesy of the Popinator.

The fine folks at Popcorn Indiana conceived of this ridiculous gadget, that’s sole purpose is to locate your mouth and fire a single kernel of popcorn at it from up to 15 feet away. According to the “electrical engineer” in this video, the machine uses binaural microphones to detect when somebody says “Pop!” and then triangulates their location so it can adjust the popcorn launching mechanism.

Whether this is a real device, or simply a publicity stunt for a viral video, it’s pretty awesome. (Especially the screwy blinking lights on the front.) Though I doubt they’d ever be able to bring the Popinator to market, as they’d probably be inundated with choking lawsuits from idiots who don’t know how to catch popcorn in their mouths properly.

Before you ask: it looks like the real deal. Popcorn, Indiana has decided that it's just too much trouble to reach into that bag or bowl and has devised the Popinator, quite possibly the world's only smart popcorn launcher. A binaural microphone array on the machine's front listens for a clear "pop" command -- say the magic word and the Popinator will aim one of its many corn projectiles at your mouth, no hands required. We're still working to glean all the details, such as whether or not the snack delivery vehicle will be a commercial project and how much money it would take to install one at home (and, we'll admit it, the Engadget offices). In the meantime, you can hop past the break to catch one of the most appetizing and laid-back promo videos you've likely ever seen.

Update: Popcorn, Indiana has answered back and says the Popinator is currently an in-house project, but it may well become something you can buy if everything lines up. We'll let the full statement speak for itself:

"All we have to say is: it is a work in progress right now. We certainly hope that one day it will become a commercial project, but as of now there is no shipping date and no price tag. It is purely a fun internal project we are toying with here at Popcorn Indiana. Based on the very positive responses we are getting online, we think this is well worth looking into as a commercial product."
