Gotta Catch ‘Em All!

fruits_collecting_net_1

The Fruit collecting net needs no explanation. Even the image is self explanatory. Fruits can fall at the most random, unpredictable times, and when they fall to the ground, they can get damaged or covered with bugs/germs. The Fruit collecting net is an elegant solution to this problem that allows fruits to be harvested without being damaged.

The Fruit Collecting Net is a Red Dot Award winning design for the year 2015.

Designers: Qiu Liwei, Shen Lihua, Li Yu, Shi Xiaoming and Liu Guona.

Band-Aid Printer Could Make Custom Bandages for Just the Right Fit

A while back we saw some innovative bandages which could be adjusted to fit a variety of wounds and skin colors. While these were great for carrying around in your bag, they might not fit each and every injury with precision. That’s where the Band-Aid Printer comes in.

band aid printer 1

This conceptual gadget is designed for use in hospitals and first aid rooms, and would automatically print custom bandages based on the specific needs of the patient. It’s designers Han Like, Liu Peng, Ren Mingjun, Wei Chenjie, Yang Xiao and Liu Peng of EVENdesign say that it would be a “quasi-3D printer”, but to me it looks more like some sort of custom vinyl cutter.

band aid printer 2

Another innovation of the Band-Aid printer would be the ability to alter the pigment of the bandages to blend in with the skin tone of the patient. The concept model shown here would print small bandages, but there’s no reason the concept couldn’t be applied to a larger format printer as well.

Like many cool inventions, the Band-Aid printer is still just an idea at this point, but it was a recent recipient of the reddot design award, which should give it some publicity in front of potential manufacturers and licensees.

Live From Essen: red dot product design gala Wrap-up

Words really can’t express the excitement surrounding this year’s red dot product design awards! For The industrial design community it’s the place to be, and it just keeps getting better. On the outside it’s glitz, glamour, red carpets, amazing hors d’oeuvres, an endless stream of champagne, paparazzi, and even dancing. But that’s not what makes this night special… it’s the geniuses behind it all. 1299 to be exact. 1299 of the greatest design minds of 2012 gathered in one spot with friends, loved ones and the who’s who of design to celebrate outstanding achievements in innovation, invention and hard work.

There’s no other place like it. Let’s take a look at the highlights from this year’s event!

First things first- could there be a sexier setting? The gala was held in the incredible Aalto theater located in the industrial heart of Essen, Germany.

Here the night’s best of the best laureates were treated to an enchanting string composition performed by violinist Sakaya Shoji as well as stunning choreography in the form of Irish ballet by Essen’s Aalto Ballett company.

Joined by two of this year’s judges, Dr. Luisa Bochietto and Prof. Stefan Diez, red dot’s very own Peter Zec presented awards to the 62 best of the best winners. While this award is an notable achievement, only one team would stand to win the award of all awards: the 2012 Design Team of the Year.

As is tradition, last year’s winner, Grohe, handed down the coveted Radius award to a company that would come as no shock to everyone attending: Porsche! Michael Maur and Style Porsche drove onto the stage in the sexiest beast of a car: the famed 911. What could be more rewarding than being introduced to the audience by none other than the Volkswagen Head of Design, Walter Maria de Silva.

We laughed. We cried. But we were all ready to party! So it was time to move on to the historic Zollverein colliery, the location of the red dot museum and Designer’s Night after party. The designers were treated to a world class meal specially prepared by chef Frank Rosin.

After their sumptuous meal, everyone headed to the long-awaited party at the red dot design museum, and what a party it was. We were up to the wee hours, dancing to the success of so many creative minds, people whose only goal is to make life better for all of us.

P.S. This is not the end of it, more updates, interviews and exciting reports to come soon.

Five Reasons to Embrace Old Age with a Tech Smile

Sagging skin, weak eyesight and aging bones are not my primary concerns for old-age. I am more curious to know if technology advancements will match my expectations. However the reality is that, as we age from this present moment, we will always be in sync with technology and its latest developments. But will the stuff that we take for granted, like a walking stick, broom or pen, keep up with our future demands? Here is a lineup of five designs that hope to make our old-age as comfortable as possible. Let me know what you think of them…

Helping Handy Escalator by Kim Mi Yeon, Kang Seong-a, Kim Beom Jun & Kim Jun Sang

Given our grease-laden diet and sedentary lifestyle, it is safe to crown obesity and arthritis as our number one enemy. Helping Handy Escalator will be the one to help us get up and down short flight of stairs, something that we take for granted! This seat slides up and down a stair rail and features magnets that help it glide with ease.

Opticane by Shin Dong Jun & Kim Min Sun

Even if you decide to keep fit and walk to the nearest deli for your morning cuppa and pancakes, a simple walking stick will not suffice. Handy combos like the Opticane will be the way to go. A walking stick with a magnifier integrated, so that you can read the prices carefully in the menu card. Yes, pancakes cost $50-a-stack in the future, get over it!

GP Pen by Gao Chao, Li Dong Peng, Xin Yong Xian, Yu Fan & Liu Jian Ming

Ok, so we digested the steep rise in the cost of living, but simple pleasures like doing the crossword still need to be addressed. GP Pen will be our extra pair of eyes they say. A convenient tool that combines a pen and a small magnifying glass! It means that readings glasses don’t have to be worn all the time.

Easy-to-use Bottle Cap by Jia Siyuan & Long Qi

Grabbing open a bottle of water ain’t gonna be easy for us old-bones! The prepared futuristic bottles will have bulbous, oval-shaped bottle caps, which are easily gripped by our weak hands. Sigh… do we really have to go through this?

Standing Broom by Poh Liang Hock

Coming from a background where the domestic help does chores like cleaning, the idea of picking a broom and doing it myself is quite painful! Sweeping the floors at the ripe age of 80 is kinda nightmarish for me! Standing Broom makes cleaning less arduous by minimising the cleaner’s need to bend down. Sounds like a promise, so it better be available in the future!

Standing Broom can stand up by itself via a folding action. The user applies downward pressure on the handle to fold the broom head, and then turns the handle clockwise to lock it in place. Unlocking the broom from its standing position involves turning the handle counter-clockwise on the block, and snapping the broom head back into its vertical position.

All the above projects are 2011 red dot design concept winners.
