Top 10 solar-powered designs to achieve an eco-friendly lifestyle in 2022

It’s 2022 and we need to get as eco-friendly as we can! We can no more continue living the way we always have, ignoring the needs of the environment and being insensitive to Mother Earth. Living a more conscious life also includes taking into consideration our energy sources. Curbing fossil fuel consumption has now become a priority, and we have a more positive energy source in mind as an alternative – the Sun! Solar power is taking the world by storm. Designers and architects are coming up with solar-powered products, homes, hotels, offices, and automobiles! Solar energy can be used to power almost every object we use in our day-to-day lives. Hence, we’ve curated a collection of product designs backed up by the sun for you – from a Tesla trailer with solar panels to a luxury yacht that runs 100% on solar energy!

1. The Tesla Solar Range Extending Trailer

It isn’t quite like Tesla to do anything without fanfare, yet at the IdeenExpo in Hannover Germany, the EV giant unveiled a prototype of yet another product they’re working on – a trailer that attaches to the back of your EV, with fold-out solar panels and battery packs that help expand your EV’s range

Why is it noteworthy?

The Tesla Solar Range Extending Trailer is pretty massive. It would perfectly complement your Cybertruck when hooked onto it, and it boasts a set of fold-out solar panels that charge a huge battery pack below it. The impressive trailer even sports a built-in SpaceX Starlink satellite internet receiver providing you with a smooth internet connection, irrespective of where you are.

What we like

  •  Features a SpaceX Starlink internet terminal

What we dislike

  • We don’t know if or when it will be launched

2. The Parelio

The Parelio is a solar-powered beach umbrella that is able to harness the power of the sun to create sustainable energy. The lawn and beach accessory can absorb sunlight and convert it into electricity for things like coolers, mini-refrigerators, phone chargers, and even to power machinery.

Why is it noteworthy?

Instead of the usual beach umbrella design that folds down towards the earth, this one folds upward towards the sun as it absorbs its energy. The inspiration for the design is a combination of origami and the solar systems on NASA spacecraft.

What we like

  • Amped with foldable photovoltaic panels

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

3. The Adidas RPT-02 SOL

Dubbed the Adidas RPT-02 SOL, these pair of over-the-ear cans juice up with natural light or even artificial light. So, they’ll not need to recharge any time soon.

Why is it noteworthy?

These headphones are a follow-up to the RPT-01(not solar-powered) and promise almost double the playback time at around 80 hours. Not to forget that the RPT-02 SOL are solar powered, and the battery keeps topping up as long as you are exposed to good lighting conditions.

What we like

  • Crafted out of recycled plastic
  • Used a highly flexible light-cell material by Powerfoyle

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

4. Solgaard Solarbank Boombox

Solgaard Solarbank Boombox Shell 1

Solgaard Solarbank Boombox 3

Finding a decent Bluetooth speaker may be easy because there are many options. But getting the best or the most affordable one isn’t always the goal. The aim now is to make “greener” choices for the future of the planet. For this reason, the new Solgaard Solarbank Boombox portable speaker enters the market with a sustainable design.

Why is it noteworthy?

The upcycled plastic design refers to speaker cloth and outer shell from plastic waste. These are waste materials but had been upcycled and used instead. This process is part of the brand’s initiative to pull about 5lbs of plastic for every product sold.

What we like

  • The Solgaard Solarbank Boombox lets you enjoy music while the battery harnesses the power of the sun
  • The Solarbank Boombox is also now sand-proof, water-proof, and drop-proof

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

5. The Urbanista Phoenix

Don’t you hate it when you pop your AirPods into your ears only to get a notification that you forgot to charge them? Well, the Urbanista Phoenix seems to have an unusually sensible fix. Equipped with a Powerfoyle solar panel on the charging case, the Phoenix just keeps charging your TWS Earbuds whenever it has access to sunlight or any bright light.

Why is it noteworthy?

The Phoenix builds on that rather clever idea by introducing solar panels onto the charging case instead (because the TWS earbuds themselves are too small to put solar panels on). This effectively allows the earbuds to charge in their case without you needing to physically plug them in or place them on a wireless charging mat.

What we like

  • Has built-in active noise canceling
  • IPX4 water resistance

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

6. The Cladrus

Borrowing from the LightYear One EV’s framework, the Polestar Cladrus concept car comes with transparent solar panels built into its roof, which feeds energy to the car’s graphene-based battery and body panel. If that wasn’t cutting-edge enough, the car’s also been envisioned with level 5 autonomy, thanks to the presence of a Waymo-esque sensor hub on the front of the roof.

Why is it noteworthy?

The Cladrus embodies everything Polestar stands for. It’s cutting-edge, runs on an electrical grid, puts drivers in the lap of luxury, and boasts of a Scandinavian design language that gives the car its signature clean aesthetic. The car also details the partnership agreement between Polestar and Waymo by delivering something that looks rather palpable.

What we like

  • Use of recycled metals and plastics in the entire car
  • Comes with a sprawling sun-roof that goes from the front all the way to the back

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

7. The Matte Works Solar Watches

In a world dominated by smartwatches with disposable lithium-ion batteries and planned obsolescence life cycles, the Matte Works solar watches are refreshing in more ways than one. Not only are they pretty remarkable wristwatches with an evergreen aesthetic, but they also come with solar panels hiding discreetly under the watch dial

Why is it noteworthy?

Unlike a smartwatch that ends up becoming ‘old news’ after the company launches its next version a year later, the Matte Works solar watches stay classy and functional for years, while underscoring the importance of relying on renewable energy.

What we like

  • The watch comes with a classic aesthetic that conceals its powerful feature underneath a tinted dial

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

8. Sunnyside

Meet Sunnyside, a nifty bento box with a self-heating AND cooling feature that brings your lunch to the right temperature just before your meal. A heating coil around the metal container helps evenly conduct thermal energy around your food, keeping hot stuff hot, or if you’ve got something like an egg/potato salad that’s out in the sun, a pair of fans located on the bottom of the lunchbox pull out warm air, ensuring your food doesn’t spoil in the heat

Why is it noteworthy?

However, the most impressive bit is? Sunnyside relies almost entirely on a solar panel built right into its lid, working off renewable energy. A solar panel built into the lid helps charge the Sunnyside’s internal 10,000mAh battery that powers the lunchbox’s heating and cooling features, and a tiny LCD screen and buttons on the side help you control your Sunnyside, choosing how hot or cool you want the contents of your box to be.

What we like

  • Doubles up as a wireless power bank to charge your phone, AirPods, or even your laptop

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

9. The Oneiric

Christened the Oneiric, this twin-hulled catamaran sports Zaha Hadid Architects’ signature fluid design and comes with a solar-paneled roof that lets the yacht run entirely on renewable energy.

Why is it noteworthy?

The Oneiric is a 42-meter-long yacht (or a catamaran to be precise) with a twin-hull design that gives it a broader footprint. Its organic, fluid design falls well within the identity of the design language Zaha Hadid Architects is known for. The main deck features a saloon containing a bar and integrated sofas that open onto a second deck with an inbuilt hot tub and two sets of steps that lead down into the sea.

What we like

  • Has the ability to switch to 100% solar energy

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

10. Solego 2.0

Clean, green, and renewable energy is nowhere more needed than in locations where electricity is not only expensive but also as rare as gold. These are areas where power generators are the go-to solution of homeowners and businesses, which often translates to gasoline generators. These, after all, are nearly ubiquitous, which means they’re easy to find and, more often than not, inexpensive. They are, however, also the worst in almost all other aspects, so more efficient and more economical options are always in high demand.

Why is it noteworthy?

Solego 2.0 addresses those needs by being green in two ways, with the most obvious being how it charges its batteries from the sun. The design is modular so that each battery “pack” can be stacked or extended to provide more power as needed.

What we like

  • The battery uses LiFePO4 or Lithium iron phosphate that doesn’t contain rare earths

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

Casio G-Shock GAB2100-1A

The Casio G-Shock GAB2100 is a stunning analog-digital solar-powered watch that does a lot more than simply telling the time. It’s powered by solar energy, so you can rest assured that it won’t die anytime soon. The watch sports a sleek body and doesn’t appear to be bulky or overwhelming.

Why is it noteworthy?

The retro styling is overshadowed by the fact that the watch comes with Tough Solar power and Smartphone Link features. The Tough Solar features work, thanks to the film-like solar panel found on the dial. It is highly resilient and can convert power from the sun. Actually, it doesn’t really need the sun to work as regular light sources are enough to power up the watch.

What we like

  • Compact and lightweight
  • A rugged design and outstanding durability

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

7. The Ford Transit Custom PHEV

The Ford Transit Custom PHEV is the midsize van well suited for camper conversions – as Dethleffs and Wellhouse Leisure have shown in the past. Now Campervan Co, known for its hybrid camper vans, gives outdoorsy people enough reason to explore their world with Ford Transit PHEV Eco Evolution.

Why is it noteworthy?

While on the outside the camper van looks like any the Ford Transit, on the inside it has all that’s required for a comfy life on the road. The customized camper gets powerful solar panels installed on the roof, generating around 1,000 watts of zero-emission power on a good sunny day. The fold-out solar panels can charge the Eco Evolution’s 3,000-watt Clayton Power leisure battery while it’s rolling on the road. This onboard battery is employed to power the modular kitchen, lighting system, and induction stovetop for living comfortably off the grid.

What we like

  • The well-illuminated interiors will not make you feel bogged up at any time – especially during extended camping or road trips
  • The removable kitchen modules give the occupants option to save space and improve the mileage when the Ford Transit will be used for daily commuting

8. The Generark HomePower 2

The Generark HomePower 2 is a backup battery for your home that’s cheaper than setting up a generator or shelling $12,000 on a Tesla Powerwall, it’s also classier and less noisy than those gas-powered generators that definitely seem archaic

Why is it noteworthy?

Recharging the HomePower 2 can happen in multiple ways. The backup battery kit comes with an optional set of solar panels that can be set up anywhere, replenishing your HomePower 2 in hours… or you could just traditionally plug the generator into a socket in your house and juice it up for a rainy day. Once recharged, the HomePower 2 can hold onto all that energy for an entire year, making it much more affordable and easy to maintain in the long run.

What we like

  • Cheaper than setting up a generator
  • Sleek and compact form

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

9. The Kalk AP

CAKE has been on a quest to develop sustainable electric bikes with its first custom-built electric off-road motorbike introduced in 2018. Then the Swedish marque again surprised motorheads with the funky modular bike dubbed Ösa which could be personalized depending on the specific needs. Now CAKE wants to protect the African wildlife from the impending threat of poachers. They call this new version the Kalk AP (for anti-poaching), and it’s solar-powered for good measure.

Why is it noteworthy?

The clean energy-powered drivetrain means less noise which in turn means minimal disturbance for the native wild animals in their habitat, and also a means not to alert the poachers on the prowl. The bike doesn’t need to be hooked to the electrical grid for a charge, adding to its versatility in operation sans any time delays. This two-wheeler is based on the original Kalk bike that created quite a buzz when CAKE burst into the scene.

What we like

  • The solar-powered bike gets smaller wheels and a wider tire configuration to evenly distribute the pressure on the ground

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

10. Elves

For eco-conscious travelers and adventure seekers who want their environmental footprint to be minimal, this collection of mindful camping accessories is the way to go.

A solar-powered weighing scale concept to help save the lives of babies in remote communities

It’s easy to take for granted simple things like keeping track of our weight. For babies in hard-to-reach areas, however, that can be a matter of life or death, and this portable solar scale tries to help tip the scales in the baby’s favor.

The first few weeks of an infant’s life are critical not only to their growth but also to their survival. Many parents might take for granted the many tools and resources available to them in watching over babies during this crucial period, conveniences that are not even accessible to remote and socio-economically challenged communities. Even something as basic as a weighing scale for infants is rare and difficult to come by, something that this product concept is trying to solve in the most efficient way possible.

Designer: Craig McGarrell

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 2.4 million children around the world died within the first month of their lives. While there are many factors that contributed to this number, a very big factor in remote regions is the ability to monitor the baby’s weight during that month. Weighing scales used in these areas are often old-fashioned analog scales that can be inaccurate and too heavy to move from one community to another easily. This makes it difficult or nearly impossible for healthcare workers to keep a close watch on babies’ weights, leading to unfortunate neonatal deaths.

The ROOTS Solar Scale concept is an attempt to modernize this critical medical equipment without making them too complicated to use or too expensive to maintain. For one, it is completely digital, which removes the risk of getting inaccurate readings over time. It is also solar-powered so that electricity won’t be an issue.

The design is also meant to be lightweight and easy to carry around, even on foot, taking the form of a backpack when not in use. The weighing bowl inside creates a safe structure for the infant to lie in, while the stiff hinge prevents the lid from accidentally closing with the child still inside.

The Solar Scale is meant to be a cost-effective solution that is easy to make and repair, thanks to having very few parts. Despite relying mostly on solar power, the design isn’t completely sustainable, as it relies heavily on plastic, particularly to give the weighing bowl a smooth surface that will be gentle on the baby’s skin while also easy to clean.

You could call it a modern-age refrigerator with unique capabilities or a solar-powered mighty outdoor cooler with an amazing USP – it doesn’t require ice to keep the contents cold. The theory on which an outdoor cooler is built, that the insulated box melts ice at a very slow rate, and in turn chills your beverages and food. GoSun Chill Solar Cooler ditches ice completely and instead uses Solar Powered energy to keep the inside compartment cool – in many ways making it an ‘outdoor fridge’. To keep it going efficiently, GoSun Chill charges via multiple power source options. This includes Powerbank, AC Adapter, 12 Volt Cord (carport charger), Solar Table, or Flexible Solar Panels. Choose the most convenient power source, based on what’s available to you at that point. I like the fact that it can keep food frozen for hours, and keeps food items from getting soggy.

Segway has come a long way in changing the perception of personal mobility and how technology propels it forward for ultimate user satisfaction. The two-wheeled personal mobility vehicle has inspired many other designs that shape the future of mobility on the outskirts of urban spaces. This 100 percent electric-powered personal mobility scooter takes a step further – it is autonomous and is fueled by a sustainable energy source – the Sun. The brainchild of designer Alejandro Otálora, Creative Director, OneBot Design Studio – the Rolo is envisioned to be a future public transport vehicle that can be called on-demand via an app. The four-wheeled transporter makes use of advanced RP LIDAR navigation cameras to steer its way through the streets. The top panel of the stable ride is covered with solar panel cells that power the unit. The solar panel is lifted up to face the Sun and provides support for the commuter en route to the destination.

Everyone loves a bunch of pretty flowers and sunflowers are one of my favorites, I do wonder why I haven’t received any. Guess XD Design felt the same since sunflowers were the inspiration for their ‘Sunshine Solar Charger’. Yes, the charger looks like a bunch of sunflowers facing towards the sun, and they do so because they make use of solar energy and not electricity to charge your phones! Equipped with a 25000mAh rechargeable lithium battery that stores all that sun-sourced energy, the solar charger transfers it to your mobile device or tablet, boosting them up with some juice. Integrated solar panels at the center of the flowers and an impressive resound material combination make this charger like no other.

GoSun is a pioneer in the fuel-free industry and it is utilizing the best of clean tech to help you use more sun…to brew more coffee. “We love being outdoors, sharing our experiences, and staying connected, but we hate running out of power and we hate missing our morning coffee – that’s why we created both GoSun Brew and GoSun Power,” says the team who obviously gets good ideas only after their morning fix. You can brew fresh coffee in as little as 15 minutes: simply add water, plug in your flask to the solar-powered power bank, heat for 10 minutes (wait till auto shut-off and LED indicator) after which you add coffee grounds and steep. With the leak-proof lid, you can carry it on-the-go without having to stop through driveways or spilling it on your shirt when you are late for work. With the GoSun Brew, you don’t need the stove (gas, lighter, fire, etc.), kettle, pot, grid power, or any separate accessories to make your favorite drink.

The Solarpill is a pendant-sized solar-powered lighting device that can attach to your body or almost any surface in the wild. How? The white half of the pill has a hole where you can thread a rope through to make a keychain or necklace. That part is also a cap, that when removed, reveals a needle-like stake that can be embedded into trees or soft rocks along your path. Igneous isn’t it? This ability to poke the light into any surface comes especially handy when we need to work hands-free, be it to cut some rope or while relieving ourselves while outdoors. The adaptability and portability of this device make it invaluable for anyone traveling through remote areas at night, from causal hikers to search-and-rescue teams. It is such a convenient, useful product that I could even imagine it becoming a staple, not just in campers’ backpacks, but in every emergency preparedness kit.

Built to run on solar power (so that you don’t have to worry about electricity, batteries, or anything energy-related), the PediCurve Solar gives you a gentle-yet-effective, healthy, and hygienic pedicure, powered entirely by renewable energy. The PediCurve Solar’s waterproof design makes it the most ideal addition to your shower routine. Designed to work on wet skin, the PediCurve’s patented PediGlass discs gently remove any dead skin cells, revealing fresh, glowing skin underneath. Its light exfoliation action emulates the effect of getting a pedicure at the salon, but at home. The Danish-designed device is just a smidge larger than most hand-held scrubbers and comes outfitted with an internal battery, solar-panels, and interchangeable glass discs made in the Czech Republic from Bohemian Glass, known to be gentle and healthy on the skin (each glass disc additionally comes with a one-year warranty).

Designed by Bradley Brister, SunUp is a product designed especially for those outdoor lovers who love hopping off on adventures! SunUp is a solar-power solution that you can easily attach onto your backpack or any other surface such as the top of a canoe. Brister’s design is a combination of small polycrystalline solar panels held together by flexible joints. It provides the functionality of a rigid solar-panel, and the perks of a flexible one as well. It’s the best of both worlds basically! SunUp serves as the perfect sidekick on all your hiking, camping, and other outdoor expeditions.

At CES 2020, Wello presented a nifty electric tricycle that is powered by the sun! The design is a subtle combination of a bike and an electric car and serves as an eco-friendly solar-powered alternative to our usual means of transportation. The car-bike hybrid has been equipped with three wheels and an electric battery. It can cover up to 100 km a day and will work perfectly for short deliveries! It’s the perfect example of sustainable transportation in the modern world.

Six Mexican students kickstarted ‘The Solar Project’, wherein they created six hand auxiliary solar lamps. The low-cost solar-powered lamps were created from Mexican waste materials such as adobe, coconut, beans, wicker, agave, and collagen. Using these materials, LED technology, and solar panels, the students built these sustainable lamps. Besides being sustainable and eco-friendly, these lamps have a rustic aesthetic, and seem more like pieces of artwork rather than lighting objects!
