Augmented Reality Tattoo: AltAR Ego

We’ve featured a few augmented reality tattoos before, but in all of them the QR code or bar code were visible, if not the only figure drawn onto the skin. Illustrator Sutu’s take on the permanent trick hides the magic in plain sight.

Sutu’s tattoo looks just like one of the scenes from Modern Polaxis, an interactive comic book that he launched last year. The comic book has a companion iOS app that reveals animations and sound effects when you hover your iOS device over some of its illustrations. From what I can tell Sutu mapped the augmented reality app’s effects to the comic book’s illustrations, i.e. the illustrations themselves are the codes. I think the app recognizes the tattoo as one of the illustrations from the comic book, causing it to trigger the effects.

I can't believe this worked! #ARtattoo

Clever work, dude! I think this discreet form of augmented reality has lots of practical applications as well, especially if the app could somehow update the graphics overlay or have smart image recognition.

This Guy Got a Tattoo of “The Dress”

I don’t know about you, but I am sick of hearing about “The Dress.” Is it gold and white? Is it black and white? Who cares? Apparently a lot of people. I’m just not one of them. Now someone went and got a tattoo of the dress. Sure. Why not?

But what color ink is it? I see blue and black. With lots of leg hair, and little redness and swelling. 24-year-old Texas piercer Daniel Howland got this permanently inked onto his body because he thought the meme was “stupid.” Yeah. That makes sense.

It seems like the dress is here to stay. At least for Daniel it is.

Guy Gets 203 Simpsons Characters Tattooed on His Back, One of Them Says “Ha-ha!”

Some people will go to great lengths to show their love for their favorite show and to get into the record books. Michael Baxter, 60, is a grandfather and a prison warden in Barwon, Australia. He hopes to win a Guinness World Record now that he has 203 characters that have appeared on The Simpsons tattooed on his back. That has to be a first.

Baxter is obviously a super fan of the show. He got his first tattoo about a decade ago. And that wasn’t even a Simpsons’ character. But once he started with the Simpsons tattoos, he just couldn’t stop. At least he should be able to hold some kind of new record.

“It’s an addiction,” Mr Baxter said. “Once you get one you want more and more.”

“And why go small when you can go big.’’

I bet the creators find some way to work this guy into the show. I think he deserves it.

This Inspirational Doctor Who Tattoo Is Written in Gallifreyan

Geeks get all kinds of cool tattoos, but how many are inspirational quotes written in alien languages? Not many. Angela C’s tattoo is an exception. It is written in Gallifreyan, which is the language of the Time Lords of course. So this tattoo looks awesome and you can also read it  - if you know the language, that is.

Apparently this tattoo reads, “Against all odds I will Rise, Against all odds I will fly, I will soar among the stars, Against all odds I WILL conquer the impossible.” You already did Angela. You already did.

Good thing the tattoo artist’s description didn’t get lost in translation. It could have turned out like, “Against all odds I have the runs, Against all odds I catch flies, I am soar among my bottom, Against all odds I WILL conquer illiteracy.” Or something.
