Finally, A Retro-inspired Laundry Machine that Separates Your Clothes For You

Here’s a question that has inconvenienced young, money-conscious, and environmentally-conscious people for years: do we have to wash light and dark clothes separately? Is the risk of staining our nice office blouse worth paying another eight quarters to clean a small handful of white clothes?

Not to sound like a commercial from the early 2000s, but… Don’t you wish there was a better way to do laundry? The Split Drum washing machine has three separate sections, so you can wash all your supposedly “un-mixable” clothes in one load. The boards are also removable for additional flexibility. After all, not everyone has an equal ratio of dark, light, and white clothing in their closet.

In addition to solving an issue that has inconvenienced young adults for years, the Split Drum is very pleasing to look at. The white color and the gold accents give the machine a bright yet retro-inspired feel that I think fits the personality of many young professionals. The Split Drum is not an appliance that will be hidden away in a basement – because what young 20-something can afford a two-floor apartment? It’s more likely that the Split Drum washer will be a prominent fixture in a smaller home… so it might as well be easy on the eyes. I think the aesthetic design of the Split Drum indicates a deep understanding of the target consumer (aka myself). The only thing missing from this design is a Split Drum clothing dryer to complete the set.

This front-load washing machine’s door slides inwards to save space in small homes

I’m not entirely sure if washing machine execs have noticed but most homes don’t really have massive laundry rooms. Unless you’re in a bungalow with a sprawling basement, chances are your laundry room is pretty tiny, and doesn’t offer enough extra space after you put in your machine, hamper, and ironing board. The Hide washing machine is pretty mindful of that fact and does something that’s simple yet so incredibly user-centric, it could easily be a great stand-out feature for machines in its category.

The Hide Washing Machine, as its name suggests, features a hiding door that helps it occupy a little less space when in use. In the event that your washing machine’s door ends up blocking a pathway if opened, or colliding with a pillar/wall/door, the Hide allows you to simply circumvent that problem by tucking the door right into the machine’s body. This results in a marginally wider machine, but here’s where user behavior comes into play… people usually buy machines after comparing measurements with their laundry rooms, but they don’t always account for the washing machine’s door and how it opens. The Hide’s door opens like any normal one, but then immediately slides into itself, freeing up your passageway so you can walk around and go about your laundry.

The Hide comes in an absolutely delightful dark matte metallic finish that allows it to, once again, hide away in your small laundry room (or service balcony in Asian households). Its seductively stealthy appearance is well complemented by a minimal black and white UI on the top of the machine, and the Hide even comes with an app that lets you program and activate features remotely, because there’s no such thing as TOO MANY great features, now is there?

This washer-dehumidifier combo elevates your interiors without steaming up your home

We’ve seen an inclusive washer and dryer, a device that steam irons your clothes and purifies your home, another appliance to cleanse your air and clothes of dust and pollen. Just when you thought you’ve seen it all, we have another cool appliance to add to this list – say hello (from 6 feet away) to Drawsher which is the child of a washer and dehumidifier!

Laundry is one of the most disliked chores and so it is no surprise to me that many of us just let the clothes be in the basket till we run out of fresh underwear. It may not be stinky or filthy, but it is certainly not the most hygienic practice because you are lettings the bacteria from the clothes spill into the air around you. Also, if you don’t air out your washing machine after using it, it can lead to molds and malfunctioning of the appliance. Keeping all these details in mind, designer Kikang Kim created Drawsher which is a sanitary machine that functions as a laundry basket and a washing machine. You’ll notice that it also looks good unlike any washing machine you’ve seen before, and that is because Kim has based the design on a modern dresser that optimizes space and blends well with your interiors.

Drawsher ups your laundry game functionally and aesthetically – say goodbye to hours of sorting clothes, dealing with excessive humidity when it runs a cycle, smelly mold, and appliance upkeep. Keep scrolling to see the design process and find out why we love this washing machine that also doubles up as a sleek piece of furniture.

Designer: Kikang Kim

You don’t have to necessarily keep this washer hidden away because it is as beautiful as a stylized piece of furniture. It truly elevates your interior game without steaming up your apartment.

The main goal was to make doing laundry easier – so you can sort your clothes in the basket as you throw them in instead of sorting a big load on laundry day itself. Plus the dehumidifier helps to not steam up your apartment and clear that wet laundry smell that no Yankee candle can get rid of.

Through line drawing and paper-building, Kim was able to determine the right height for the Drawsher so it doesn’t cause any backache and continues being functional.

The build of the Drawsher is based on that of your modern dressers, it is meant to optimize space by also doubling up as your laundry basket. You don’t need a closet to keep your washer and your dirty clothes, you can have this appliance outside and now have extra space where the laundry basket/laundry room used to be – like a new shoe rack or a pantry room!

The dehumidifier is mounted at the back end of the Drawsher and keeps the laundry hygienic. It helps to keep the bad smell from the laundry baskets away and also the detergent smell when you do your laundry. Having it in-built means no humidity or steam when you use it and less upkeep of the appliance as it keeps away mold and mites.

Sorting laundry is such a tedious task and keeping 4 laundry baskets is simply inefficient. Drawsher has 4 separate compartments that let you sort dirty laundry the minute you throw it in instead of going through a whole pile later. One day, one t-shirt, one basket at a time.

The laundry drawers are seamlessly hidden without handles to keep your dirty laundry from being aired in public!

The lid of the filter is concealed with a rectangular opening so it blends in with the rest of the furniture-appliance aesthetic.

The blue color was chosen to represent freshness and the wood finishes complement it perfectly. The combination of the two is timeless and will fit in almost every interior setting. You can store laundry detergent and fabric softener on the top and control how much is to be used via the display screen.

Inclusively designed washing machine that takes a new ‘angle’ on doing laundry

Taking everyday home appliances and turning them into inclusive design products is an art and the world needs more of it! While most kitchen appliances have become smarter, tasks like vacuuming the house or doing laundry, require the user to be completely able which makes a lot of people dependent on others. Slip Wash is a concept design for a laundry machine that aims to solve this issue and make independent living possible for wheelchair users.

The usual washing machine takes up more space with the front opening door and makes it harder for the user to navigate around with a wheelchair. Even in the drum washing machine, the height of the opening makes it difficult for a person in the wheelchair to operate it. In Slip Wash, the door slides up and the washing container is in the front, which makes the space less restrictive and reduces the maneuvering and bending the user would usually have to do.

Slip Wash is a concept that can eliminate the space and navigation issue making laundry day a less daunting errand for those in a wheelchair. It is the small things in your day to day life that give you independence and inclusive design a tool that enables us to give that gift of freedom.

OmiSonic’s versatile ultrasonic washing machine is the size of a bar of soap

I’m not the guy to knock washing machines. I think they’re pretty dope, and they get the job done… and I’m not really an early adopter of the pocket, ultrasonic washing machine trend just yet, but I honestly think they make some compelling arguments.

The OmiSonic is a washing machine that’s virtually the same size as a bar of soap. If you were to ask yourself what a washing machine truly was, the simplest definition is, that it’s a machine that uses turbulence, water, and a soap/detergent to rinse clothes. Take that definition and condense it down, and you’ve got something like the OmiSonic. It doesn’t use an agitator, a drum, or a lot of power. It relies on a small-but-powerful ultrasonic vibrator to agitate the water at incredibly high speeds, allowing small bubbles to scrub any dirt off your soiled clothes, even reaching small corners and crevasses to get that tough dirt out. In its incredibly handy avatar, the OmiSonic is portable, uses less water + electricity, and is completely wireless. It can be used to clean small batches of clothes, jewelry, cutlery, or even scrub dirt/chemicals off your fruits and veggies, both indoors or outdoors.

OmiSonic comes as a small, monolithic palm-sized device. Designed to be waterproof, the device doesn’t have any controls of its own, and is completely wireless. Instead, it runs via the OmiSonic app that allows you to switch on or off the washing machine, as well as select from multiple different washing profiles, be it for clothes, for fruits, or even for jewelry. Through the app, the OmiSonic adjusts its intensity as well as wash time. All you do is place it in a vessel of water along with the item that needs cleaning, and the OmiSonic does the rest! OmiSonic even comes with a unique paper-detergent to help with getting those stains or dirt out!

Its soap-shaped avatar is just visually apt and makes it synonymous with cleaning! The OmiSonic comes with a proprietary dock for charging it, and runs for as long as four washes on a full charge, handling up to 4.4lbs of clothes per wash. In its small, portable form, the OmiSonic is perhaps a washing machine in the truest sense. It washes clothes, jewelry, acts as a dishwasher, can scrub your fruits and veggies, cleanse your spectacles, and even handle delicates like your baby’s clothes or items. Using ultrasonic waves to vibrate dirt and bacteria off your belongings, the OmiSonic does the job as well as, if not better than, your hands, or your standard washing machine… and manages to get the job done with as much as 1/10th of the required water!

A Washing Machine with an Elevated Design

wall_hanging_washing_machine_layout

Washing machines aren’t necessarily designed to be featured in the room, and their aesthetics are far from being their primary functions. However, due to the nature of them they are now commonplace in kitchens, and their large dimensions and bulky designs are difficult to conceal within the room.

The designers at Kurz Kurz Design decided that rather than attempting to hide the appliance, they would instead do the exact opposite and allow it to make more of a statement; it’s not often that you see wall-mounted washing machines in a domestic setting, so straight away it has something that will grab your attention! By being wall mounted it means that the appliance doesn’t require its own dedicated floor space, making it perfect for homes with limited space. On top of this the elevated height makes for an easier loading/unloading process due to eliminating the need to reach down.

Clean Kicks and Clothes at Once!

three_space_washing_machine_01

Throwing your sneakers in the clothes washing machine can give them new life, but you also run the risk of damaging the barrel or leaving behind rubber and sidewalk grime that can make its way onto your wardrobe. If only washers were designed with a compartment just for freshening up your kicks. Well, that’s precisely the idea behind the 3 Space washing machine.

It keeps fabric goods and shoes entirely separate so they never cross contaminate. It’s not only more hygienic and safe, it also saves water by washing both clothes and shoes in the same cycle. Simply pull out the compartment drawer conveniently located underneath the drum section and pop in your shoes. By the time your laundry is finished, your shoes will be brighter, cleaner, and ready to air dry.

A Washing Machine that Doesn’t Need Detergent

evaque_01

From the same designer as this wildly cool washing machine comes yet another that’s functionally different yet just as aesthetically beautiful. It’s called Evaque and you can use it like a hamper by throwing in similar clothes before washing OR use it as your normally would with separate loads on laundry day.

The design stands out from others not just for its uber-minimalistic looks but for its innovative clothes-cleaning tech. It harnesses the power of an innovative “Ion Wash” system that cleans clothes even without detergent. The drum itself, which is made of specialized glass, creates a static charge when rubbed by the clothing that attracts, withdraws and neutralizes dirt. This feature also increases the electrical properties of the water so that it can better dissolve solids and other liquids. Thanks to these unique washing types, the design has a 20% reduction in water usage compared to standard wash units without sacrificing effectiveness.

Don’t be deceived by the minimalistic interface, this washer features a comprehensive selection of wash cycles and settings to accommodate various types of delicates, sportswear, linens, and more. Additionally, its thoughtfully designed lid is soft-closing so there’s never any slamming or jamming.

The PriMo Washer

vitez_01

By PriMo, we me primitive modern! Do a quick internet search for “primitive washing machines” and you’ll be mesmerized by the work people had to do with their hands! Even more amazing is how far washing machine tech has come in a relatively short amount of time. Inspired by these old clothing cleaners, the Vitez washer fuses the simplistic beauty of these primitive designs with modern innovation.

The result is a minimalistic top-loader that uses 30% less water and a lot less floor space than your average machine without sacrificing capacity. Unlike other waterfall-style methods, it employs Jetwash tech that blasts water molecules and soap upward through clothing fibers so they’re not only cleaner but require less water to rinse. An Aqua Groove Pulsator feature keeps clothes moving and water flowing at a consistent rate ideal for cleaning.

Additional convenience features include an ergonomic and clean-looking handleless lid, easy-to-read curved-glass display interface, as well as lid-integrated LED lighting that indicates the machine’s cycle progression.
