SMEG baby monitor concept shows off a cute, retro aesthetic

Whenever I pass by the appliance sections of department stores, I am always drawn to the SMEG display, even though I know I will probably not be able to afford any of their stuff. I like the retro aesthetics of the brand that they are able to bring to all their kitchen appliances. I also have no need (and never will) for a baby monitor but this project that imagines what a SMEG baby monitor would look like is still pretty interesting.

Designer: Priyanshu Maiti

The designer studied the design aesthetics and applied it to this project that asked them to create a concept for a baby monitor. The target market is Western and European parents and caretakers belonging to the upper middle class, which is basically SMEG’s market for their kitchen appliances. In keeping with the retro theme, what he came up would fit right in with the other products in their line since his inspiration was their other appliances anyway like the mixer and coffee maker.

The final render shows a baby monitor with a sophisticated but simple and playful look. The design looks like a toy rocket with pastel colors which will make it attractive to kids even though they’re not the target audience for this. When it comes to the features, it has the usual ones that you would need from a baby monitor like the camera, charging port, SD card slot, control buttons. They didn’t really expound much on the features since this is more for the design and aesthetics of the product.

As I said, I really don’t need a baby monitor. But this would be useful for those who need something aesthetic and at the same time something that would help keep their mind at ease when it comes to their children’s safety. Well, at least, we have an idea of what it will look like if ever SMEG does venture into products outside of their kitchen appliances.

Smart Tech for Mommies and Daddies To-Be

thread_00

Being pregnant can be overwhelming and even scary… but knowledge is power when it comes to taking care of baby! That’s the idea behind Thread, a smart system of devices that aim to connect and educate parents in the prenatal stages.

The first of 3 devices is wearable tech in the form of a health sensor that analyzes the fetus sleeping state and even emotions based on movement. These metrics can also be shared with health professionals for constant monitoring throughout pregnancy. Additionally, it allows mom can start communicating with baby using her voice.

The next device was designed for working dads who can’t be around all the time or who work abroad for extended periods. It alerts the father when the fetus is awake. In the same manner they might put an ear or cheek up against mom’s belly, they can do the same against the tactile top of the design where movements by the fetus are mimicked.

The third layer of the design is accessible via the user’s smartphone. The Thread app is designed to answer any questions parents-to-be might have and includes a Prenatal Encyclopedia, Prenatal Diary, an explanation of the fetus’ daily growth, doctor’s tips, and more!

Olmose Gives Your Old Smartphone a New Purpose

Olmose Dog Station + Guardian 01

Assuming that you’re not paying tens of thousands of dollars on luxury (and always overpriced) smartphones, the first thought to cross your mind when cracking a mobile device’s display probably is to throw it away and get a new one. Belgian company Olmose is here to demonstrate that it doesn’t always have to be like that, and that unused smartphones can still be put to good use.

Even though the display is the main interface between a smartphone’s apps and its user, a crack affecting it shouldn’t determine us to disregard its capabilities entirely. After all, the rear camera most probably survived the physical damage, and there is still plenty of processing power under the hood, so the best thing to do would be to repurpose the smartphone by turning it into an extremely affordable home security system with help of the Olmose Guardian app.

Since installing and uninstalling apps on smartphones is something that can be done remotely, you won’t need to use your device’s display for that. Once the Olmose Guardian app is installed, you can proceed to recording or simply monitoring your home. Any and all events will trigger notifications that will arrive on your current smartphone, provided that you’ve chosen to be notified.

There are two apps that comprise the Olmose system. The Guardian app gets installed on your unused smartphone, while the Olmose Remote app needs to be running on your new device, in order to control the functions of the former. First of all, there’s a Video only mode that enables you to monitor whatever happens in front of the smartphone’s camera. Secondly, there a Surveillance mode that sends you notifications whenever particular motion patterns are detected by the camera. Thirdly, the device running the Guardian app can be turned into an anti-burglary alarm that sends you push notifications/emails/phone calls whenever suspicious movements are detected, regardless if it’s day or night.

The Dog Station developed by Olmose complements the Guardian app by adding infrared advanced detection and advanced night vision, not to mention that this device can act as a stand for the phone running the app.

Below are all of the functions that the Guardian has. Smartphone aside, this is one of the most affordable solutions you could find for protecting your home, car, or baby.

Olmose has turned to Kickstarter to raise the funds necessary for mass producing the Guardian. At the time of writing, backers had pledged nearly 4% of the €100,000 funding goal, and the campaign still had 37 days to go. Early birds can secure for themselves an improved security system comprising of a Dog Station and the Olmose Guardian app for $64.50, while the rest of the backers will have to pledge $75 or more in order to get these products in April 2016. In case you only want the app, you need to pledge $21.50 for a lifetime license for one Guardian.

Samsung Techwin America Launches BrightVIEW Baby Monitor

Samsung Techwin America Unveils the BrightVIEW Baby Video Monitoring System (PRNewsFoto/Samsung Techwin America)

After becoming a parent, nothing is more important than making sure that your baby is safe and sound at night. Samsung Techwin America’s newly launched BrightView baby video monitoring system can definitely help them in this department.

Samsung Techwin America, one of the Korean giant’s lesser known subsidiaries, is in fact a leader in such businesses as Robot & Control, Security, Industry, Defense, and Energy. While baby monitors are not something new in its portfolio, the company felt the need to expand this line, and announced the BrightVIEW Baby Video Monitoring System.

“Today’s tech-savvy parents are looking for the latest innovations to comfortably monitor their children,” explained Richard Simone, Samsung Techwin America VP of Sales and Marketing. “With the BrightVIEW Baby Video Monitoring System’s visual and audio advancements, we’re reaffirming our commitment to providing users with unmatched convenience and quality to ensure the safety of their children.

The new line features a portable 720p HD camera with a 5.0″ LCD color touch screen that allows parents to keep an eye on their children’s movements even when they are away. The camera can be controlled quite easily using the monitor, which means that panning, tilting and zooming will provide a visual of the little ones from all of the available angles.

BrightVIEW baby monitor includes HD audio enhancements for two-way communication, meaning that the babies can be heard by the parents, who in turn can soothe them by cooing or singing lullabies. The fact that one of the parents goes out of town doesn’t mean that the baby has to feel his or her absent. To compensate for their absence, parents can playback one of the four pre-programmed lullabies that include such classics as Brahms Lullaby or Hush Little Baby. The included comforting night-light will help the toddlers slip into a pleasant dream even faster than they normally would, as it has a very calming effect over them. On top of that, the BrightVIEW monitor can remind new parents of the baby’s next feeding time.

Since Samsung Techwin is one of the big names in the surveillance industry, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the camera included in this baby monitoring system features night vision capabilities up to 16 feet, and Pure Digital Signal over the 2.4Ghz frequency for secure and interference-free video. Because of this technology, the monitoring system works at up to 900 feet with no interferences from wireless routers, microwave ovens or cordless phones.

The BrightVIEW Baby Monitoring System can include up to four cameras that can be either installed in four different rooms, or can be used to monitor four different infants in the same room. The kit can be purchased now from Kohl’s, Target and buybuy BABY (soon enough it should show up on Amazon, as well), with a starting price of $229.99. That’s not exactly a cheap baby monitor, but considering the technologies implemented in this one, the price is entirely worth it!
