LED Bulbs with 3D Printed Skyscraper Shades: Stalaclights & Huddle

One of the advantages of LED bulbs over incandescent ones is that they generate significantly less heat. Product designer David Graas capitalized on that benefit by creating lamps with 3D printed “bulbshades”, which are diffusers that sit directly on the LED bulb.

David’s newest bulbshade design features inverted Art Deco skyscrapers, hence their name Stalaclights.

While I appreciate the novelty of Stalaclights, I actually think that they’re more pleasing to look at when they’re upright. The one that works upside down is David’s first 3D printed bulbshade, the Huddle.

You can purchase both Stalaclights and Huddle from Layers in Design. Stalaclights cost ~$200 (USD) while Huddle costs ~$170 each. Each bulbshade comes with an LED bulb – 5.5W for Stalaclights, 5W for Huddle – an 8ft. cable, a lamp holder and a ceiling cap. I can see geeky bulbshades becoming a thing… for about a tenth of these prices.

Philips SlimStyle Flattens the Light Bulb

Throughout the years, a lot of things have evolved, including light bulbs. The latest of these is the SlimStyle by Philips, which is different from all the others because it’s a flat light bulb.

It’s still shaped like the typical light bulb, only it’s not as three-dimensional as you’re used to anymore.

The SlimStyle is covered by rubber and has LED lights arranged in a horseshoe shape on the inside. This configuration disperses heat throughout the bulb more efficiently than conventional LED bulbs, eliminating the need for aluminum heat sinks. This makes the flat light bulbs cheaper in comparison to the non-flat ones, and they’ll be priced below $10 when they finally hit the market.

The SlimStyle will go on sale today, January 2nd at The Home Depot, with the first bulbs offering the equivalent of a 60-watt incandescent for only 10.5 watts.

Bulb Flashlight is a Light Bulb and Flashlight in One

Sometimes, you need light bulb. Other times, you need a flashlight. Giving you the best of both worlds is the Bulb Flashlight. As its name implies, it’s a light bulb and flashlight in one.

It sounds like a concept but it’s actually a real product that’s being sold by New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

The light bulb can last up to 60,000 hours when it’s attached to a lamp. That’s 2,500 days, 357 weeks, or close to six and a half years. Out of the lamp and as a flashlight, the device’s internal battery will give you up to three hours of illumination at a time.

These Bulb Flashlights will no doubt come in handy, especially during emergencies. You might want to install a couple of these in random lamps around your house, so you can just grab one and go when disaster strikes. Assuming you can manage to unscrew a light bulb in the dark.

The Bulb Flashlight is priced at $45(USD).

King Edison Pendant Lamp: Which Came First, the Light Bulb or the Chandelier?

What you see below is not a product of Photoshop. It’s the King Edison Pendant Lamp designed by Young & Battaglia, and it’s a cross between a light bulb and a chandelier.

King Edison Pendant Lamp

Now normally, the chandelier would have a bunch of bulbs installed all around it. The tables are turned in this unusual lamp, though, as the chandelier is found inside a larger-than-usual “light bulb” with a diameter of 15 centimeters. It’s definitely an unusual piece to have in your home.

The King Edison is described as a combination of “the pure simplicity of an Edison light bulb with the romance and glamour of a Kings chandelier”, consisting of “a miniature brass chandelier inside a hand blown clear glass shade and satin chrome fittings.”

Something as intricate and unique as this obviously doesn’t come cheap. The King Edison is available online from Mineheart for £480 (~ $737 USD).
