Man Finishes Super Mario 64, GoldenEye 007 & Zelda: OoT in Less Than 1 Hour

Karljobst fired up Super Mario 64, GoldenEye 007 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on three different N64 consoles and TVs, then cycled through the three games as cutscenes played on the other two. Of course, he inevitably let Link, Mario or Bond sit idle from time to time so he could focus on one game. He finished GoldenEye 007 in 21:51, Ocarina of Time in 18:10 and Super Mario 64 (a 16-star run) in 15:44. Don’t believe me? Watch and watch and watch:

I guess the opposite of this would be watching Tarn Adams complete Dwarf Fortress.

The Greatest N64 Mod Yet Makes It Portable And Beautiful

We all have dreamt of playing our N64 favorite titles on the go, but seeing that the Virtual Console is still rather green on the 3DS, a modder took the matter onto his hands.

A Bacman user by the name of Bungle decided to create the smallest and most polished N64 mod yet, sporting a 3.5? screen and internal batteries that provide up to 4 hours of juice for the console. Majora’s Mask on the go? Count me in.

Lëkki Nintendo 64 Consoles: Next-Gen Refurbishing

Imagine Slowpoke starting a ColorWare franchise and you get the concept behind Lëkki. The French gadget shop sells and repaints only old – but beloved – gadgets, such as the Motorola StarTAC 130. Their latest (?) offering is the Nintendo 64, a console even older than Motorola’s thousand-year old flip phone, but no less popular.

The console is available in four colorways and comes with a similarly colored controller and a copy of Super Mario 64, which is probably the best launch game of all time.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Metallic Flake Nintendo 64 Casemod: Twilight Prince

Link isn’t known for being flashy or even stylish, but fans still associate him and his series with bling, thanks to Nintendo’s tradition of releasing gold cartridges and systems for The Legend of Zelda games. The talented console modder Zoki64 and his customer steal that trick from Nintendo and then some by making a sparkly Ocarina of Time-themed Nintendo 64.

Zoki64 gave the console a metal flake finish, causing it to twinkle in direct light like an angsty vampire.

TRON: Legacy Nintendo 64 Case Mod: Project Virtual Reality

deviantART member Zoki64 specializes in Nintendo 64 case mods. One of his latest creations is this TRON: Legacy-themed mod, complete with glow in the dark paint. I guess you could call it CLU – a console that lights up.

Zoki64 is tight-lipped about his modding process, but at least he took a video of the console and the controller so we can take a better look at it:

N64 Book Casemod: The Nintendomicon

They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Unless the book’s cover has the logo of the Nintendo 64 on it, along with a power switch and a cartridge slot. Also when the book wasn’t actually a book to begin with. I therefore judge the Nintendomicon to be guilty of third degree awesomeness.

The Nintendomicon was made by Redditor JHood_. He carved holes out of a wood and leather box that looks like a book. He intends to give it to his brother as a classy yet geeky send off gift. The Nintendomicon is JHood_’s first mod, so understandably it’s far from perfect. For one, it has no air vent, although it does have a fan. He also bungled its name, calling it “Nintendomnicrom” when he actually meant to spell “Nintendonomicon.” In the end he accepted the renaming suggestion of a fellow Redditor.

N64 Controller Pillow: Zzzz Trigger

Artist/Nintendo fan/Sleep gamer Donna Marie Evans made her own Nintendo 64 controller pillow. It’s made of polar fleece and cotton and has embroidered letters and buttons. Now Donna can do a barrel roll in her sleep.

Donna said she might be able to sell copies of the pillow if she gets hold of more materials. Send her a note on her deviantART page if you want one. And while you’re there, ask her to make an N64 console bed!

Retro-Bit Wireless Hypermode N64 Controller: Sit Back and Enjoy the Classics

Corded controllers led to one of the iconic images in many homes in the 80s and 90s: kids sitting on the floor, controller in hand and looking up at their TV. But if you’re TV is too big to view up close and your ass is too lazy to get off the couch, keep an eye on Retro-Bit’s Wireless Hypermode retro controllers. First up is the wireless controller for the N64.

Richard Mitchell of Joystiq was able to try a test unit of the controller at E3. Although he admits that he only tested it for less than 5 minutes, Mitchell says that the controller’s didn’t seem too bad, although it’s not quite as good as the official controller. As you can see in the images the controller also has Auto and Turbo modes, while the receiver has a slot for memory cards and Rumble Paks.

The Retro-Bit Wireless Hypermode N64 controller should go on sale this summer for $30 (USD), while wireless versions of the SEGA Genesis, NES and SNES controllers will follow this fall.

Nintendo 64 Stuffed in Game Boy Player, Makes GameCube Backwards Compatible

Console modder Jon Jandran aka Hailrazer is back with another Nintendo related project. Instead of working on portable versions of old game consoles, Hailrazer decided to combine two consoles – the Nintendo 64 and its successor, the GameCube – into one playable unit.

Hailrazer crammed the guts of an N64 into the case of a Game Boy Player – the GameCube add-on that allowed GB or GBA cartridges to be played on TV. Because of space constraints, Hailrazer had to fold the N64′s cartridge slot, making it unusable. He loads N64 games on his frankenconsole using an SD card system based on the Everdrive 64 flash cart.
