BMW Lets Drivers Control Real Cars Video Game Style

How’s this for a fun idea? BMW USA apparently outfitted a BMW M6 and M6 GTLM with live cameras and R/C technology so they could be driven by remote control in the style of a first-person racing game.

bmw_1zoom in

It’s a cool idea, but there may be some trickery going on here though. How many professional racecar drivers can just pick up R/C controllers and drive cars expertly? It’s hard enough to do when you’ve got experience.

Anyway, whether they actually did this or not, it is a pretty awesome idea. I know I would love to play a video game with real cars. At least until I crash mine and the game ends after like 5 seconds.

A Supercharged Roomba Speeds Around a Park

Roombas are pretty handy little robot vacuum cleaners. Even if they do do their job super slowly. But if you have ever wondered what a Roomba would look like on crack, check out this video. It is the fastest Roomba ever.

roomba_1zoom in

This previously broken Roomba vacuum robot was modified by Warusoneko. It goes all crazy fast like a cartoon Roomba, kicking up dust as it speeds around a park. This one apparently had its drivetrain replaced with the kind that is used in remote-controlled cars.

It’s pretty fun watching a Roomba speed along all crazy like this. If all Roombas went this fast, dirt and dust would be a thing of the past.

The RC Flying Car: It’s a Car, It’s a Plane!

Is it a car? Is it a plane? It’s the RC Flying car! It’s 2016 and we should have flying cars all over the skies by now. Since we don’t we will have to settle for this weird remote controlled flying car, called the Protocol Terracopter. It both races over ground and flies in the air.

flying_car_1zoom in

You can select between two ground and air speeds, and on the ground it reaches 67 mph scale speed. In the air, it is capable of 360° movement that includes spins, loops, and rolls. It also has six-axis motion-sensitive gyrostabilizers that provide optimal flight performance. Race it on the ground, then take to the air. It’s the best of both worlds. And now you have a flying car at last. Now why can’t they just make a bigger version we can ride in?

The Protocol Terracopter is only $99.95 from Hammacher-Schlemmer – though you can also find it on sale from Amazon for a bit less.

It Doesn’t Get Much Smaller Than These Tiny R/C Star Wars Spaceship Helicopters

star-wars-rc-toy-1

I don’t think you’re looking at anything too high tech, like self-stabilizing quad-copters or whatever. It’s just a bunch of super tiny remote controlled helicopters with a 16 ft. range. Their bodies are shaped like Star Wars battleships, like a TIE Fighter or an X-Wing, which is why they’re cool. A 3 minute charge will get them airborne for about 4 minutes. We can’t tell you how precise the controls are, but our guess is: not at all. Still, it might be good enough to keep you entertained for a while, or to introduce kids to Star Wars. They’re $50 a pop, although you’ll have to deal with a product page in Chinese.

Flying Avengers Helicarrier Actually Handles Aircraft

One of the coolest things about the Avengers movie was the massive flying helicarrier that had all the people and aircraft aboard. That was awesome and I would love to see that happen in the real world. As close as we are likely to get to have a real helicarrier is this remote-controlled version that some geeks cooked up.

helicarrierzoom in

Sure we have seen flying R/C versions of the helicarrier in the past, but this time out they actually land R/C planes on the helicarrier and take off from it – making it much cooler.  It’s a bit of a trial-and-error thing to land planes on the flying deck of the helicarrier though.

The planes taking off and landing on the carrier don’t exactly look like the aircraft from the movie, so there is room for improvement. Check out the video and see the aircraft fly, land (and crash).

Deal Of The Day: X8+ Premier Power Drone

X8+ Premier Power Drone

Drones let you record imagery and capture the world that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to from the ground. A good option to consider when you’re just starting out with drones is the X8+ Premier Power Drone. It’s a powerful, ready-to-fly and Follow-Me compatible drone that you can use for photography, for art projects, and even for delivering small precious cargo.

The X8+ has an expandable platform to carry goods to be delivered or your GoPro. While it can carry up to 1 kg, heavier loads will slow the drone down, so you might want to think twice before loading it up to the max. The X8+  stores flight data so you can generate point clouds for precision surveying and fully-automated flight control makes it easy to fly.

The X8+ is available for $1,300.

Carbon Flyer Is The Coolest RC Toy Plane Ever

Screen Shot 2014-12-08 at 12.52.02 PM

You’re looking at a remote controlled toy plane made out of carbon fiber, which you can steer with your smartphone. The carbon fiber construction means it’s tough and durable, and will withstand crashing into buildings and things repeatedly without taking on damage. The wings are even glued on to the body using super tough “carbon nanotube enhanced epoxy which creates bonds stronger than steel welds.” The long range Bluetooth module gives you a 240ft. range, and about 3 minutes of flight time. That may not seem like much, but the batteries are hot-swappable, so a pocketful of these and you can fly all evening. Dual high power motors with differential thrust take care of steering, and do away with fragile moving parts. But perhaps most impressively, the Flyers are outfitted with a camera! It’s only 640×480, but that’s still better than 0x0.

A $99 pledge will get you a Carbon Flyer, with a slated delivery date of August 2015.

1:4 Scale Transforming Robot Car: Project J-deite

We’ve featured Kenji Ishida’s progress regarding his transforming robot over the years. The first three models we saw were already coveted toys, but Kenji made it clear early on that his ultimate goal was to create a life-sized car that transforms into a humanoid robot. Kenji, Wataru Yoshizaki and Takara Tomy launched Project J-deite to see that dream through. To launch the project, they showcased the toy’s biggest version yet.

The J-deite Quarter is 1.3m tall (4.3ft) and weighs 35kg (77lb.). It has a 3kW battery that lasts up to an hour per charge. In robot mode, the J-deite Quarter can walk up to 1kph (0.62mph), grip objects and pose like a bad ass. In vehicle mode, it turns into a two-seater that can goes up to 10kph (6.2mph).
