Wishbone Thermometer Lets you be a Temperature Checking Ninja

When my son was an infant, he had constant ear infections, and we had to check his temperature roughly every 15 seconds or we felt like terrible parents and were convinced he had brain damage. The problem was he was also the lightest sleeper in the history of babies and would wake up at the sound me turning the thermometer on. It really sucked if he was sick enough that the doctor wanted rectal temperatures, he certainly wasn’t going to sleep through that.

A new thermometer has turned up on Kickstarter that will make you a temperature checking ninja because it can check temperatures without actually touching the baby. All you need to do is get the probe within 5cm of your child’s head to check the temperature.

I doubt that it is as accurate as a rectal temperature, so you will still need to wake baby when they are really sick. The Wishbone also works for testing the temperature of liquids and rooms. It connects to Android or iOS devices and works with an app that stores readings for comparison.

You can get one for a pledge of $33(USD) with shipping in April and the project has already more than doubled the $20,000 it was seeking.

Beer Koozie with a Thermometer

koolernaut Beer Koozie with a Thermometer
The foam insulator has gone digital with this Kickstarter project, the Koolernaut. The Koolernaut is a Koozie-like sleeve (apparently the term “koozie” is trademarked even though it’s in the common vernacular like Xerox or Kleenex…ugh) that has a digital thermometer to tell you how cold you beer is. And how cold should your beer be for optimal taste? Well there’s a handy chart on the back:
koolernaut back Beer Koozie with a Thermometer
The Koolernaut’s thermometer activates once you insert a beer. It’s made of thick sturdy foam to keep your brew cold. There’s also a specially designed “ice puck” freezer pack that slips in underneath your beer to chill your beer if you need it. Does a beer koozie really need a thermometer? Probably not, but do we really need any beer accessories? Heck I don’t even need a glass, just pour it right from the tap into my mouth and I’m good to go. Regardless, we still think it’s a really cool idea and it could definitely come in handy for serious beer drinkers out there even if you’re just serious about cheap beer.

Kinsa iPhone Thermometer: Your Plug-In Doctor Is Ready

I take my phone pretty much everywhere, but it’s true that there is a lot more that it could do, given the right add-ons. Check out the Kinsa accessory, which will not only take your temperature but may also be able to diagnose what’s wrong with you or your kids.

kinsa smart thermometer 620x353magnify

Kinsa is a low-cost thermometer that attaches to your iPhone via the headphone jack. It’s able to record your temperature history, and you can also input your symptoms. The Kinsa app taps into a database to see what kinds of illnesses are going around your local area. If there is a cold outbreak, then it’s possible that other people are suffering from it to. This is by no means a certain diagnosis, and it doesn’t replace a doctor, but it’s an interesting idea. And of course, it only works if there are other users in the area using Kinsa.

Kinsa is not yet available for purchase, but it will be available soon. You can hit up the Kinsa website to be notified of its release.

Thermodo unveils a mercury-free way to measure air temperature on your smartphone

DNP Thermodo brings a mercuryfree way to measure air temperature on your smartphone

If you're the type to eschew the weather report on your smartphone and just, you know, open the window instead, the Thermodo sensor and app that just launched on Kickstarter may be for you. The petite device inserts into (and draws power from) the audio jack of your iOS or Android handset / tab, measures the exterior or interior air temperature, then sends a corresponding audio signal to the mic input on your device. The companion app, along with developer Robocat's Haze and Thermo apps, interprets that signal and displays the temperature on your device -- or you can develop your own with the outfit's open source SDK. The project is now live on Kickstarter where a minimum $19 bid will get you one in black, with the company looking for $35k total for the tooling and materials needed to build them. You can scoot over to the video after the break for more, or check the source to grab one.
