Use It, Don’t Brick It: LEGO Flash Drive

LEGO USB

The long wait is over: the official Lego flash drive is finally here. Sure, modders and DIY-ers have made their own equally awesome Lego-inspired USB drives over the years. But the same can’t be said for the lazy, Lego-loving geeks who don’t have the knowhow or are just too lazy to make their own.

The fully-licensed Lego flash drive looks like several plates were stacked one on top of the other. The coolest part? You can use it like a regular brick and stack whatever you want onto it to make it truly your own.

The Lego flash drive is available in a variety of colors and capacities. Prices for 16GB start at $12.99, and it comes with a bonus Lego brick to boot.

The Only Hub You’ll Ever Need: 28-Port USB Hub

28Port USB

Most laptops come with at least two USB ports on average. Some come built with as much as four. But if you transfer files from one external drive to another while printing stuff and adding songs to your iPod on the side, then you’ve got no more port left for hooking your camera or tablet or whatever else up. Not that you should be doing all of these things at once, but if you do, then you might want to get one of these 28-port USB hubs.

It looks like a power strip, only instead of sockets, it’s line with USB hubs instead. As the name implies, it can accommodate up to 28 connections, from flash drives and cables to connect your camera, phone, and MP3 players with your computer.

The 28-port USB hub is available online for about $62.

Ninja Star USB: Shuriken Save Your Data

Ninja Star USB

The Ninja Star USB isn’t exactly the most discrete flash drive on the market, but it’s definitely one of the most attractive ones out there. As you can see, it’s shaped like a shuriken, the weapon of choice of stealthy ninjas, and while it’s not as sharp as its namesake, it can hold 8 gigabytes worth of data, be it documents, pictures, music, or movie files.

The Ninja Star USB can’t fight deadly computer viruses on its own, but it shuriken keep your data safe as long as you keep it safe. (Pun intended–sorry, I couldn’t resist!) It’s available online for $15.50.

Game of Thrones Flash Drives: What is Data May Never Die

If there is anything Game of Thrones has taught us it is that anyone can die at any time. It doesn’t matter if you are a lead character or not. If you have data you need to protect from an untimely demise, you might want to check out these slick zinc alloy flash drives, made in Game of Thrones style.

There are two drives to choose from. The Stark direwolf drive can be hung on a lanyard or a keychain. Naturally, the wolf’s neck detaches from its head to reveal the USB connector for the drive. The second drive is an exact replica of the Hand of the King’s pin, and can actually be worn as a pin. The sword section sticking out from the bottom of the drive hides the USB connector.

Each of the drives has 8GB of storage and either one will cost you $29.99(USD) at ThinkGeek.

Gigs 2 Go Tear-Off USB Drives Now on Kickstarter: Pledge 2 Get

Earlier this year we learned about Gigs 2 Go, a concept for a credit card-sized pack of flash drives that you can “tear and share.” Inventors Kurt Rampton and BOLTgroup seem to have figured out how to mass produce the drives and are now raising funds on Kickstarter.

The final product is almost exactly the same as the concept. The drives come in packs of four. The pack and the drive cases are made of recycled paper, and perforations make it easy to tear a drive off the pack. The only difference is that the concept called for a plastic-free product, but Kurt and his partners eventually decided to add a plastic carrier to Gigs 2 Go. That’s because the drive they’re using is so thin that it won’t fit snugly into a USB port on its own. At least the carrier is made of recycled plastic.

Pledge at least $30 (USD) on Kickstarter to get a pack of 2GB Gigs 2 Go drives as a reward. You can also get 4GB and 8GB packs with larger pledges.

Rechargeable AA Battery USB Drive Stores Power and Data

Rechargeable batteries are pretty eco-friendly in the sense that you can recharge them and use them, again and again and again, until they stop holding a charge. However, most battery chargers are bulky and are a pain to carry around, especially if you’re traveling or need to use it on the go.

A neat solution comes in the form of the rechargeable AA battery USB drive. Now, there’s already a product on the market called the USBCell that can be recharged via USB. However this concept design not only does it have the capacity to power up your gadgets that require AA batteries, but can also store video, audio, documents, and other files. All you have to do is plug it into your computer to recharge it or transfer files.

Rechargeable AA Battery USB Drive Stores Files, Powers Up Devices

Rechargeable AA Battery USB Drive

If you’re on the go a lot, then you’ll find yourself needing or even looking for basic things that will be easy to use when you’re away from home. One such thing is the Rechargeable AA Battery USB Drive. It’s essentially a flash drive that doubles as an AA battery. Need something to store your files? No problem. Looking for some batteries to power up your flashlight, radio, or whatever? Then just grab a couple of these and you’re good to go.

This gizmo sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Unfortunately, it really is, because it’s just a concept design–for now, that is. If someone out there sees the potential in this thing and finds a way to make it happen, then it’s only a matter of time before these will hit the stores.

Chess Piece Flash Drive: Savemate

It’s been a while since I featured a product from Brando, and I have to say I’m slightly disappointed with what they recently showed to us. It’s a USB drive shaped like a king chess piece. I know right? A perfectly reasonable, gift ready gadget that doesn’t make you want to bash your head against the wall in confusion? What’s going on at Brando?

The only weird thing about it it’s that Brando calls it a Chess Flash Drive. And it’s not even that weird! They just accidentally a word.

If you’re looking for a gift for a chess fan, get this from Brando. It sells for $16 to $38 (USD) depending on the capacity you want. Meanwhile I’ll be here mourning the end of an era.

3000 Books in One Flash Drive: A Library That Fits in the Palm of Your Hand

I hear parents complaining about how technology distracts kids and how some games and gizmos effectively make their kids dumber. I often tell them that the solution lies in their hands: replace those apparently useless gadgets with more educational stuff that their kids will still enjoy.

If you feel like you’re in the same rut, then you can get started by getting the 3000 Books in One Flash Drive.

3000 Classic Books Flash Drive

It’s literally a library that fits in the palm of your hand. You can take it anywhere and plug it into your laptop or desktop whenever you feel like checking out a book. It saves time and effort from having to make frequent trips to the local library, so you should definitely consider getting one if you’re a huge book worm.

The books include classic renowned titles from Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Oscar Wilde. The 3000 Classic Books flash drive is available online for $29.95(AUD) (~$28 USD). If the cutesy book design or the price tag doesn’t appeal to you, then you could just hit up Project Gutenburg and save the 42,000  titles they have onto your own USB drive for the price of nil.
