A Groundbreaking Ceiling AC

Picture this. You’re sitting at a table with a group of colleagues, with an AC above you on full blast. You’ve got your sweater on, but you’re still freezing. Meanwhile, on the other side, this hefty guy’s sitting in a half sleeve shirt with pit-stains, complaining about the heat. As exaggerated as that may seem, that’s what work is like for me all week. The Circle ceiling AC wonderfully tackles this problem, among others.

The Circle concept AC comes as a circular ceiling mounted AC with 360 degree coverage “that can be controlled”. Using the mobile app to work the AC, you can select which areas to throw wind towards, and not just that, you can select multiple temperatures at the same time! That means you can have the AC projecting cool air in one direction, and warm air in another! So, no fighting over the room temperature anymore. Gives you a lot more time to fight over office stationery!

ThinkEco smartAC Kit

ThinkEco SmartAC kitThis is a great energy saving tool to have if you have a plug-in air conditioner. The ThinkEco smartAC Kit will help you conserve energy all the while helping you keep cool on these hot Summer days.

The kit comes with a modlet and a remote control/thermostat. You can take the remote control with you to any room of the house, which is a convenient way to keep your location cool. If the AC reaches the room temp that you want the modlet will turn the AC off. If it gets 2 degrees above the set thermostat temperature, the AC will turn on.

Another great feature about this device is the ThinkEco software and smartphone app that are a part of the package. You can adjust the thermostat from anywhere. You can turn it on an hour before you leave work or if you are on vacation it is a great way to monitor the temp at home.

Intelligent AC Control

With heat season right around the corner, it’s time to get the AC up and running for those hot summer days! However, the luxury of cool air also comes with a responsibility to be mindful of energy use. The tado° Cooling system is the easiest way to do it. It works with your smartphone to turn any AC unit into a smart device. Control your home room-by-room, turn off the AC when you’re gone and pre-cool when you’re on your way home… all from the palm of your hand. Watch the vid to see how it works!

Tado Thermostat Brings Nest-Like Functionality To Your Old AC

tado

You may have bought a fancy Nest thermostat, but what about that AC in the guest bedroom that’s not connected to the rest of your home’s system? Tado’s smart thermostat allows you to communicate with it through IR, while itself connecting to the Internet and your phone with WiFi. What this means is that you can remotely turn your AC on and off, while setting up a geofencing functionality that will automatically turn the unit off once you’re a certain distance away. It’ll also automatically turn the AC on once you’re back inside that fence, pre-cooling your room while saving money when you’re away. Finally, the fact that it’s a connected device means you can track usage through detailed graphs, and obtain insight into your own usage patterns.

It’s a $69 pledge to their Kickstarter campaign, with an expected retail price of $149.

LG’s Anti-Mosquito Air Conditioner: Death to All Bloodsuckers!

If there’s one thing that I despise, it’s mosquitoes. The thing is that if they get into my bedroom or apartment, they will suck on my blood relentlessly, leaving everyone else alone. Maybe that’s one of the reasons I need the LG Anti-Mosquito Air Conditioner.

This LG Anti-Mosquito AC was designed for the African market, like in Nigeria were malaria is still a major threat to life. Since mosquitoes are carriers of this disease, it makes sense trying to get rid of as many as possible. The AC uses ultrasonic wave technology which is supposed to repel mosquitoes. According to LG’s tests, the AC has a success rate of 64% when it comes to deterring malaria-transmitting anopheles mosquitoes in 24 hours. Overall, it manages to repel 82% of mozzies. The unit has also been designed to deal with power fluctuations and brownouts prevalent in some African countries.

While it’s primarily targeted at Africa, I could see this being useful in any warm and humid climate where mosquitoes like to breed.

Disney Research develops capacitive touch that detects multiple users by their fingertips video

Creating a truly multi-user, multi-touch display is a tricky prospect. How do you know who's who short of turning the screen into one giant fingerprint reader? Chris Harrison, Ivan Poupyrev and Munehiko Sato at Disney Research have suggested in a paper that fingerprinting on a capacitive touchscreen isn't far off -- it's just what we need to fingerprint that matters. Rather than look for physical ridges, the scientists' method sweeps through AC frequencies to find the exact electrical impedances of fingertips in contact with the screen. Different bodies, different clothes and even different shoes give everyone a unique signature that lets the screen identify specific people, even when they each have multiple fingers in play. The researchers propose that the technique would work well in collaborative workspaces, personalized devices and security, but let's not forget that this is Disney we're talking about: it's placing a strong emphasis on the prospects for shared screen gaming without the limitations we know today. While any practical use is still some distance away, it's easy to see future tablets and tables that are designed from the start to encourage a little socializing.
