Today on In Case You Missed It: A prototype for a fire-starting drone was deployed in Nebraska last week, dropping small balls of accelerant to create a controlled burn over grasslands. The idea is that future firefighters could use UAVs like the U...

Londoners: Wanna Know How Safe The Air Is To Breathe? These Pigeons Will Tell You

pigeon-air-patrol-1

In an effort to raise awareness about air pollution, Twitter put on a contest where ones of the winners was a team composed of PR agency DigitasLBi and tech startup Plume Labs. Their project involves strapping tiny air sensors to the back of domesticated racing pigeons (which return home to roost every night) and have them fly around the city. You’re then free to Tweet your location to any of the 10 birds in the project, and they’ll send you back info about ozone, nitrogen dioxide and volatile compound levels. In other words, the birds will tell you how safe it is to even breathe the air around you. Granted with only 10 birds you won’t get a very complete snapshot of the city’s pollution levels, but again, this is more about raising awareness than it is about creating an accurate network. The bird squad is known as the Pigeon Air Patrol, and they’ll fly the skies for only 3 days.

Birds in the Buff with Weapons: Armed Avians

Look at these images. They are so weird. They are birds with human-like butts and toes with guns. It looks like some sort of deranged FPS lost its main characters. It’s almost like Howard the Duck decided to get some revenge for all those bad movie reviews.

The guy behind these weird images is CG graphic designer Takio-chan. Apparently these are character models done while he was in vocational school. Whenever and wherever they were done, they are bizarre.

One of the chicken characters is even eating fried chicken. Cannibal! I like the green and yellow birds best myself. Birds with butts are so weird.

Oh, Just A Parrot Laughing Maniacally, Nothing To See Here!

Youtuber Mark G. posted this video of a parrot laughing like a supervillain. It sent chills up my spine. And then back down. It felt weird, but also kind of good. 10/10 would watch again.

Dirds: Dog Heads, Bird Bodies

You remember Meowls, right? Cat head/owl body hybrid? Those were good times. Now there’s Dirds, dog heads/bird bodies and my god are they cute/creepy AF. I bet Mother Nature wishes she would have thought of it first! I mean, you come up with weird creatures like anteaters and capybaras and stuff, but you really dropped the […]

This Parrot Singing “Everything Is Awesome” Is, Well… Awesome

This Parrot Singing

This is a parrot singing “Everything Is Awesome” from The LEGO Movie. It is pretty amazing. She sounds like an angel! An angel who’s got something lodged in the back of her throat (maybe a cough drop???), but an angel nonetheless.

This Little Owl Taking A Bath Is So Cute I Can Barely Handle It

This is a short but sweet video of Trude the owl taking a bath. My god, it is cute. It’s enough to make a person crazy! Really put you over the edge into total psycho territory. That’s my excuse from now on, anyway. It’s that lil baby owl’s fault I’m like this!

Wearable Feeder Mask Lets You Get Face to Beak With Hummingbirds

Wearable Hummingbird Feeder Mask

Calling all lovers of birds! A contraption called the ‘Eye to Eye’ is now available so you can get up close and personal with hummingbirds while you feed them. It’s basically a wearable bird feeder that lets you literally come face to beak with the birds as they feed. A miniaturized feeding tube is embedded in the middle of the mask, which means the birds will be in your face while it feeds.

For $80, you’ll get two feeding tubes, two laminated inlays, and one face shield (of course you need one.) Is it worth it? Is it not? That depends on you and on the experience that you’re hoping to get out of it. You can get the ‘Eye to Eye’ mask here.
