Monopoly Gamer Nintendo Edition Powers up the Board Game

There’s been a Nintendo-themed Monopoly board game for a number of years, but frankly, it was just regular Monopoly with some different properties, and some rather hard to identify metal tokens. Video game fans will definitely want to to grab this new edition of the board game which is a much better representation of the Mario universe.

The Monopoly Gamer set includes a modern and colorful game board featuring locations from the world of Nintendo, along with similarly vibrant title deed cards. Instead of paper Monopoly money, the currency is golden coins (though they appear to be made from cardboard.)

Gameplay is a bit different from traditional Monopoly though, as players earn points for their properties, coins, and boss battles won, and each character has unique abilities which can impact how you or other players earn or lose coins. In addition, there’s a special power-up die for special boosts.

The plastic character tokens of Mario, Princess Peach, Yoshi, and Donkey Kong really look great, and the set is expandable with additional tokens and abilities for Wario, Luigi, Toad, Boo, Rosalina, Diddy Kong, Fire Mario and Tanooki Mario.

The core Monopoly Gamer set sells for $24.99(USD), while blind-boxed additional characters go for $4 each.

Playable Operation Cake: Surgical Sweets

Operation was one of my favorite board games growing up – because it really wasn’t a board game at all, but an opportunity to play around with electricity and pretend to be a surgeon. So what could be better than combining this fun game than an edible version made from cake?

That’s exactly what Ann Reardon from How to Cook That did, creating a this tasty Operation cake that really works. Underneath the colorful frosting, there’s a sponge cake with vanilla buttercream, simple syrup, and strawberry jam.

The game is playable, thanks to a network of “wires” inside, which are actually made from Twizzlers. Connected to a Makey Makey circuit, spots on the cake can detect when you touch the the insides of the surgical areas, and makes sounds when you remove the patient’s various body parts. It doesn’t work exactly like the original game in that it makes sounds even if you don’t mess up, but it’s still a cool build.  You can see how the wiring works at the 9:15 mark in the video clip below:

If you want to make your own Operation cake, drop by the How to Cook That website for the full recipe and details on the build.

The Princess Bride-opoly: As You Wish…

The Princess Bride is one of the most classic of the ’80s movies out there. I harbor a secret fear they will try and remake it and ruin all that was good about the original like the new Ghostbusters did. Fans of the movie will certainly want to match wits with their favorite Sicilian over a game of The Princess Bride-opoly.

The game is sort of like Monopoly, only it has a custom game board and character tokens from the film. You can play as Westley, Inigo, Buttercup, Fezzik, or Vizzini. I have dibs on Andre. I only wish the character tokens were metal like real Monopoly rather than paper.

The Community Chest and Chance cards have been changed to Twoo Wuv and Inconceivable! Rather than houses and hotels, you get cottages and castles, and the in-game money is Florin currency. Get your game at ThinkGeek for $44.99(USD).

Flat-Earthers Will Hate This Wooden Globe Chess Set

With this unique globe-shaped chess board, you are playing for total world domination. The domination of a small wood world, but still. This awesome chess set was created by Layton, Utah product design student Ben Meyers and his father.

The design looks like part sextant and part globe. It took them several weeks to create this stunning spherical chess board out of walnut, soft maple and jatoba woods. It has magnets embedded under the squares to hold each chess piece in place. You can turn it and move your pieces and feel like you are conquering the world.

It is a functional work of art that is just great to look at, and would be fun to play on.

Here's something you chess players will get a kick out of. This is a magnetic fully functioning sphere chess set. It was had made by me and my father. Quite an interesting spin on the game. Really does change the strategy.

The Legend of Zelda Clue Board Game: It’s Dangerous to Go into the Conservatory Alone…

…take this pipe wrench. To add to the ever growing number of Monopoly and Clue variants out there, it is now The Legend of Zelda’s turn. Truly a link to the past. I suppose it’s a good time to unleash a Zelda version of the classic murder mystery board game thanks to the success of Breath of the Wild on the Switch.

Though in this version, it’s all mystery, and no murder. Here’s the setup: Ganondorf has stolen the Triforce and is threatening Hyrule. So to fulfill the prophecy and defeat him, you have to find out who possesses the power to defeat the bad guy, what item is needed, and where his hidden lair is.

You can pre-order the game now for $44.99(USD), and it’s due to ship around June 30th, so it should give you something fun to do when you are finished with Breath of the Wild.

Labyrinth Board Game: Roll Your Dice, Save the Baby

Labyrinth was one of those movies that I thought was creepy when I was young, but I watched it anyway. Puppets are weird. Now you can relive those creepy, weird moments from Jim Henson’s 1986 tour de force in board game form. The goal of the game is simple: save the Sarah’s baby brother from Jareth, the Goblin King.

Up to four players can team up as Sarah, Hoggle, Ludo, or Sir Didymus, and work together to save the tot. If you want, a fifth player can portray Jareth, and play against the team.

The game requires 13 turns – one for each hour you have to rescue the baby – though it only takes about an hour of real time to complete. It plays out on a 2′ x 2′ board, and includes over 30 game tokens, 32 labyrinth cards, six different polyhedral dice, four character sheets, four ability cards, and four weakness cards.

This game looks pretty cool and sells for $49.99(USD) over at ThinkGeek.

Stained Glass Chess Set: Classy and Glassy

Chess is a thinking man’s game. It means that to play it well, you’ve got to be all intellectual and smart and stuff. Even kings play it – with real people on their lawn. You have to have a classy chess set if you want to keep up appearances. Well, this Stained Glass Chess Set is ohhhh so pretty and expensive looking. Classy as hell. And glassy as hell.

Game designer KnowNothing_JonSnoo received it as a birthday gift from his father, who is a stained glass artist. I would be too afraid that I would break it if I played a game on it’s lovely surface. Sure enough, he keeps it on a high shelf when he’s not playing with it for now, but one day it will have its own dedicated table when his sons grow up enough not to trash it.

That is one beautiful chess set.

Bob’s Burgers Monopoly Has Burgers, Belchers, and Butts

Bob’s Burgers is one of my all-time favorite animated programs. The characters, voice acting, and writing are all spot-on, and the show is hilarious. Seriously, if you’ve never watched it, it’s time for a binge.

Now, fans of the show can get their hands on an officially-licensed Bob’s Burgers Monopoly set.

Naturally, the board comes filled with lots of locations from the show, from the Jimmy Pesto’s to Wonder Wharf, and offers up Community Garden and White Pants Take a Chance cards.

The tokens are based on Bob, Linda, Tina, Gene, Louise, and Teddy, though I have to say that the sculpts aren’t exactly accurate. Seriously, Gene is unrecognizable  – at least they could have given him a Casio and you’d have some idea who he was. I’m guessing that everyone will be fighting over the Louise token like they do with the car in regular Monopoly.

Monopoly Bob’s Burgers edition is available now over at ThinkGeek for $39.99(USD).
