‘Wolfenstein 3D’ ported to Game Boy Color on turbocharged cart

Yes, that's a Game Boy Color cartridge sporting the Wolfenstein 3D logo. It's not just cosmetic, because a modder named Anders Granlund has built a playable version of the classic FPS for the ancient handheld console. To give you an idea of the degre...

Nintendo’s NES retrospective book looks like a game cartridge

Nintendo's NES Classic Edition isn't the only nostalgia bomb the company is dropping this fall. Nope, Playing With Power: Nintendo NES Classics from strategy-guide publisher Prima Games is en route for this November as well. The hardcover boasts 320...

Pico Cassette Video Game Cartridge for Smartphones: Famiphone

Japanese company Beatrobo wants to bring back the cartridge with Pico Cassette, a video game cartridge for iOS and Android devices. Is it practical? Not unless a cartridge can hold dozens of games. But Beatrobo hopes to attract old gamers and collectors who cherish the physical representations of their pastime.

Pico Cassette is a gaming variant of Beatrobo’s PlugAir, which is a storage device that transfers data via the headphone jack on mobile devices.

Beatrobo is currently running a crowdfunding campaign in Makuake, where one of the rewards is a Pico Cassette port of the Famicom and MSX game Ninja JaJaMaru-kun. The game is given to backers who pledge at least $45 (USD), which is hopefully not reflective of Pico Cassette prices. Also, I wonder if they’ll push through if the next iPhone does give up the headphone jack.

Atari Flashback 2 Stuffed Inside Atari 2600 Cart: Pocket Atari

We’re big fans of Sharon aka lovablechevy’s portable console mods, so we were very happy when she pointed us to her latest creation. She crammed the Atari Flashback 2 – an Atari 2600 variant with 42 games built-in – inside a 2600 cartridge.

Sharon said she’s had this case mod in her sights for the past 8 or 9 years. One of her friends failed to do this same transplant and told her that it’s impossible. So I guess this is a special project for her as well.

It has a 2.5″ screen, buttons from a Wii controller that she placed on a SuperJoy III controller board and a 700mAh battery that should last around 4h per charge.

The coolest thing about the Pocket Atari is that it looks just like a normal cartridge from the front and the top, though obviously the stickers give it away.

Sharon also modded an Atari Paddle controller so she could hook it up to the Pocket Atari via mini-USB. Check out the tiny Atari in action:

Imagine, someday someone’s going to cram the 3DSXL into its cartridge. Or not. Head to Sharon’s BitFix thread, YouTube channel and Facebook page for more on how she made the Pocket Atari.

Super Russian Roulette for the NES: Deer Hunt

Last year we checked out Andrew Reitano’s old school arcade game VEC9. It turns out that around that same time Andrew and his friend Mike Dooley were working on another arcade game as their submission to Fantastic Arcade. It turned out to be such a hit that Andrew decided to turn into a commercial game… for the NES.

In Super Russian Roulette, you and up to two other players play a non-lethal version of the infamous game against a virtual cowboy using the Zapper gun. The last person – or computer – standing wins. To spice things up, the cowboy heckles players from time to time with over 100 voiced taunts.

You smell like a leper gnome! Er, wrong game. Pledge at least $55 (USD) on Kickstarter to receive a Super Russian Roulette cartridge as a reward.

Harmony: One Atari 2600 Cartridge to Rule Them All

I love the art on old Atari 2600 cartridges and their boxes. However, if you want to play and collect all of the vintage console’s games, but don’t want to have to devote an entire room in your house to their storage, there is a solution.

These days, it’s easy enough to collect a ton of vintage games thanks to emulators. You can have thousands of games on your hard drive instead of storing physical copies of cartridges or discs, which take up a lot of physical space. But what if you still want to use of the actual console while playing these old games?

That’s where the Harmony Cartridge comes into play. It is essentially an memory card adapter for the Atari 2600 that lets you play every game in your library using just one cartridge. So now you can use the console and play all of the games with no mess. Simply download all the old ROMs, load them onto a memory card and plug the cartridge into your old Atari 2600.

The Harmony Cartridge is available in both microSD and SD card versions at AtariAge, and sells for $60 to $80(USD). The Standard and Deluxe versions support 98% of games, but there are a couple of titles and newer homebrew games that require more memory. For 100% compatibility, the $85 Harmony Encore is the one you should buy.

Tecmo Super Bowl & RBI Baseball NES Cartridges with 2015 Rosters: Sports. Sports Never Change

The FIFA and NBA 2K series are the reigning kings of team sports video games, but they pale in comparison to the legacy of Tecmo Super Bowl and RBI Baseball. Much of the credit goes to the fans who keep modding both NES games with updated rosters. You can play those modded ROMs with a NES emulator, but if you still have an NES and a CRT TV you might want to get Tecmo Bowlers’ cartridges.

Tecmo Super Bowl: Unrivaled contains 32 teams from different eras, a feature that really should be standard in all sports games. It also contains four – FOUR! – new plays, adding to the approximately 4.3 billion American football plays that I already don’t understand.

R.B.I. Baseball 2015 on the other hand is a straightforward update based on the 2015 opening day roster mod by RBI Baseball.US. You can order both NES cartridges from Tecmo Bowlers for $50 (USD) each, and go back to a time when there were no pre-order exclusives, no ads in a game you already paid for, no stupid virtual currencies and no multiplayer lag. Because there’s no online multiplayer.
