Pac-Man VHS Tape Coffee Table

I’m not exactly sure if making furniture out of your old VHS tapes is the best use but it’s probably better than just throwing them out. Or not. So maybe you can’t manage to part with your old copy of Police Academy 3 and Bobcat Goldthwait’s dramatic turn as a Citizen on Patrol. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Keep it on display.

That doesn’t scream “sturdy piece of furniture” to me, although there is a plank of wood underneath the table top. As a plus it does have another 80′s icon on it- Pac-Man and the center of the tape reels form the dots. So there’s that. (creepbay via technbob)

Minecraft Coffee Table

minecraft coffee table Minecraft Coffee Table
Check out this awesome DIY Minecraft coffee table. The beauty of Minecraft is it’s simplicity- essentially just colored patterns of blocks. Which makes for a great looking and subtly geeky coffee table. This Instructable shows how to make it yourself.

The directions make it seem like the toughest part is painting all the wooden squares in. If that’s the hardest part for you when making your own coffee table then you are a better woodworker than I am. Great job and as far as furniture based off of video games go, it’s actually very tastefully done. Now, about those creepers.

Ouija Board Coffee Table

ouija board coffee table Ouija Board Coffee Table
This table is seriously bad-ass. It’s a handmade Ouija Board Coffee Table. Have a séance in your living room while you watch The Walking Dead or even something really scary like say Judge Judy. Ooooh. This DIY’er built this table almost completely from scratch. Here’s what it looked like starting out with just some pieces of wood.

Ok, now imagine that put together, sanded, and stained (cause we’re not showing a photo of those boring steps!) Next he drew the design, scanned it in and resized. Obviously it’s a huge deal to actually draw something like that, so props to you buddy because we have no artistic talent here. Then he printed it out mirror imaged on a laser printer onto enough sheets of paper to completely fill up the table.

Next he applied some sort of acrylic gel on top of the table and then laid the sheets with the laser-printed design on top of that. Overnight the gel absorbed most of the toner ink (and this is why he laser printed instead of inkjet printed) while the wet paper messily peeled off, leaving the design imprinted on the table.

Some sealant was applied to clean up the look and protect the image. Then 5 coats of poly to clear coat the top of the table and it was done. Awesome.

Even if you’re not into the occult or board games or anything like that, this would still make a cool as hell coffee table for your living room or den. Assuming you’re not freaked out by the Ouija Board because it knows…..everything. Just ask.

X-Wing Coffee Table

xwing coffee table X Wing Coffee Table
If perhaps you thought the Star Trek Enterprise Coffee Table was just a little too geeky for your classy home decor tastes, perhaps you’d be more interested in a Star Wars X-Wing Fighter Coffee Table instead? (And to answer the question, yes Star Wars is less geeky than Star Trek.) Built by the same guy, Barry Shields, the table actually has the glass held in the middle of the two halves of the spacecraft. It’s handcrafted and can be yours for the low low price of $5500. A must have for any mancave. (via ubergizmo)

Floppy Disk Coffee Table

floppy disk table Floppy Disk Coffee Table
This gigantic floppy disk coffee table was created by Axel van Exel and Marian Neulant. Remember floppy disks? They were like the USB flash drive of their day except you needed like 10 of them to hold any cool games. The Floppy Table not only looks really cool, it also has a clever hidden compartment where a real sized disk’s metal piece would slide open:

I can think of over 4 different things I could put in there, maybe 5. The table is made of hot-rolled steel which is definitely not floppy unless you plan on living inside a blast furnace (not recommended btw). I don’t see a price listed but it says to contact the designers to order one, so why not? (via technabob)

Pac-Man Tables

pac man tables 650x332 Pac Man Tables
I’m really digging these Pac-Man Ghost Tables from Masters of Fate (artist R.Fitzpatrick). They come in a whatever ghost color you want, or a custom color. Each one is hand cut, sanded, primed and then covered with 15-20 coats of paint. That sounds like a lot.

The tables come in various sizes from side tables to coffee tables to desks and kitchen tables. Each one takes 2 weeks to make by hand, right here in Austin, Texas. By here I mean there unless you are there in which case here for you actually is here, otherwise it’s there until you go there and there becomes here. (When will then be now? Soon.) Prices range from $145 to $495 depending on the table size you want. Pixel power!

Insert Coin: Playsurface open-source multitouch computing table

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

A Microsoft Surface in every office? Yeah, fat chance. At $8,000, you may never see Samsung's SUR40 glow in the wild, but budget versions of the backlit HD table have begun popping up, such as the Merel Mtouch, which retails for half the price. Still, four grand is a lot to ask from casual users -- we need a bargain-basement option to help catapult the concept to success. The Playsurface could be one solution, with an open-source design and a much more affordable price tag. The multitouch computing table is the product of Templeman Automation, and its creators have begun promoting their concept on Kickstarter. In its current iteration, the Playsurface will ship in two flavors -- short, to double as a coffee table, and tall for stand-up applications -- with a $1,750 pledge netting backers a complete kit.

Setting out to fulfill the goal of widespread adaptation, the creator is promising one Playsurface kit with a $1,750 pledge, including a Windows computer, a short-throw 1280 x 800-pixel DLP projector and a transparent touch surface, all housed within a self-assembled wood enclosure. There's also an infrared LED strip to aid with input recognition and something called a "Blob Board," which serves as a dedicated hardware processor tasked with touch detection and connects to the computer via USB. A $350 pledge gets you a Blob Board alone, while $650 is matched with a table (sans computer and projector) and $1,250 will net you a full kit, less the computer. There's just shy of four weeks left to go to get your Playsurface pledge in -- hit up the source link to make it happen.

Star Trek Enterprise Coffee Table

Set phasers to geek. We have to admit that this is actually a pretty good looking coffee table, considering it’s shaped like a fictional space ship. This Star Trek coffee table is made of ash, poplar, and cherry wood and topped with 1/4″ thick glass which has an awesome curve to it on the back end. The glass is 34″ by 54″.
