A Caffeine blast from the past

coffee_robot_1

Since the meteoric rise of instant coffee, people haven’t quite brewed coffee the old-fashioned way in a while. And no, an automated espresso machine using ground coffee isn’t really the old-fashioned way either. The folks at Continuum decided that maybe it was time to bring the Ye Olde style of brewing coffee back. The Crema Coffee Robot 1986, a result of that endeavour, is a coffee pump with an aesthetic that reminds me of Alessi’s old days.

The process is super simple. Raise the piston to expose the filter chamber. Place the coffee grounds in said filter chamber. Next, fill the upper reservoir with piping hot water and clamp down. Lower the lever so that the water is pushed through the ground coffee. Don’t forget to put your cup underneath to gather the espresso, or you’ll be in a steamy mess!

The Crema Coffee Robot 1986 won a Red Dot Award for the year 2015.

A Casa for Coffee

coffee_01

Inspired by Japanese architecture, the profile of Yu Huiyang’s Architecture Coffee Maker sports a remarkable resemblance to a vertical dwelling! Through its “windows,” users can get an inside look at the inner workings of the system. As the coffee flows through the tube inside the cube water tank, users can observe clear water and brewed coffee overlap in a unique visual experience followed by an awakening coffee aroma!

Back to Basics

However simple they originally were, espresso capsule machines have largely become overcomplicated, unintuitive and over-designed. MILO is a response to this movement that focuses on minimalism both aesthetically and functionally. Straight lines, 2 large/small modes… less to distract and less to malfunction. It’s all you need when you’re just looking for a cuppa joe!

No Frills Nespresso

A part of Nespresso’s appeal is it’s super-simplified process, so why are many of the machines so complex? CUP reflects the original minimalism of the brand with straightforward aesthetics and functionality. No double or single buttons, no built-in trash bin, no space for big cups or extras…. simply take a capsule place it into the lid, turn it manually into the classic bayonet catch and a preset 25mg of water will dissolve the 5mg into your espresso. No more, no less! Just Nespresso!

The Barisieur is an alarm clock that will wake you up with a bespoke cup of coffee right when you need it most. It challenges all 5 senses, easing the user into the day with the subtle movement of stainless steel ball bearings that boil water via induction heating, accompanied by the smell of freshly brewed coffee or tea. Nightly prep encourages a “ritual” before bed, signaling the body & mind that it’s time to unwind and that there’s something to look forward to in the morning! Better yet, it makes for a stunningly beautiful bedside piece. DO WANT!

The Modern Man’s Moka Pot

Peter Dudas’ slimOKA gives you the rich, authentic coffee taste of the classic moka pot with the convenience of a modern coffee maker. In black or silver anodized aluminum or steel, its aesthetic is also a modern twist on the classic. At the heart of the design is an electronic system that steam heats coffee with the press of a button, alerts the user with an audible tone when finished, and automatically lowers temperature to keep coffee warm without burning it. Unlike stovetop moka pots which you have to keep an eye on, you can set it and forget it!

Italy Wants to Send Espresso Machine to the ISS

Growing up, I really wanted to be an astronaut. Since I was only eight and had little chance of actually making it into space I did the next best thing and drank lots of Tang. I learned quickly that one of the downsides to being an astronaut was crappy breakfast drinks and freeze-dried ice cream.

It appears that the Italian contingent aboard the International Space Station is sick and tired of instant coffee and they are ready to do something about it.

iss 6201magnify

Italy is reportedly working with a company called Argotex and coffee giant Lavazza to create a special espresso machine for the ISS. Naturally, the machine will be called the ISSpresso.

The machine will reportedly use those small capsules that some coffee makers here on Earth use. Rather than plastic tubing, the ISSpresso machine will have steel tubing that can withstand 400 bar of pressure. I guess it needs the pressure to make the water flow in zero gravity. ISSpresso will also have redundant parts to keep the caffeinated liquid flowing.

ISS gets its first Coffeemaker: Lavazza ISSpresso

Thanks to the difficulties of engineering for zero-gravity, astronauts living on the International Space Station often have to go without creature comforts we take for granted. But if all goes well,...

Crazy for Cubespresso

If you’re a caffeine-head, then you want you coffee and you want it NOW… which is precisely what’s wrong with existing espresso capsule machines. Get in line! But not with Cubespresso. What’s great is that you can brew more than one cup at a time. What’s even better is that you can mix different flavors in one brew to create your own blends! Satisfy your impatience and never have to choose just one flavor again! DO WANT!
