My Little Storm Trooper Ponies

Perhaps one of the cool things about living in a planet populated with 7 billion individuals is that if you wait long enough, even the most far fetched things will likely come to be, sooner or later, in one form or another. Take for instance the above figurine, created by one Sheena Henderson (Roogna), on Etsy. It’s the body of a Little Pony with the head of a Storm Trooper, is made out of Apoxie Sculpt (a kind of synthetic sculpting compound), “and is entirely hand painted and sealed. He is named, signed, and dated on the bottom of his feet.” You can play around with it, and his head turns a bit, but it’s not meant to take much abuse.

We… kind of dig it, but we’re not sure why. That’s the thing about art, we suppose. You can buy this for $150, though visiting Roogna’s Etsy shop will reveal a few other models, like a Chewbacca My Little Pony.

Pokémon Generation 1 Clay Figurines: Pennymon

Last month we saw a cross-stitch featuring all 151 of the original Pokémon. Redditor ninjazzy spent over 250 hours making something more tangible: tiny clay figurines of each Generation 1 monster. You can probably fit four of these in one Pokéball.

Each figurine sits on a penny, which is why ninjazzy calls them Pennymon. It also means ninjazzy literally has a penny for every original Pokémon.

The advent of 3D printing is most certainly upon us, and its helped injection molding make the crucial transition from dated tech to a retro novelty. The Roto-a-Matic has recently gone live in toy maker Rotofugi's store in Chicago, and will create a polyethylene plastic figurine for you in under a minute, provided you feed it a token. Rotofugi and product design company Squibbles INK have given the vintage Mold-a-Rama vending machine a new lease of life, and now they are looking for artists to contribute designs for future molds. Currently a one-eyed dragon designed by sculptor Tim Biskup is on offer for Chicago-based hipsters, but for the wind-averse, a token-to-toy video demo resides beyond the fold.

Star Fox 64 3D Figurines Will Make You Do a Barrel Roll of Joy

Star Fox 64 is as famous for its one liners as it is for its origami style vehicles. If you’re a fan of the game, these figurines by Takara Tomy won’t let you down, sir. They’re actually based on the 3DS remake of the game, but these are the first and thus only official models of the vehicles, so there’s no sense in nitpicking.

Although the models are available separately, Ryan Deaver of Nintendo Connect bought a whole set and was kind enough to share these pictures of his assembled vehicles. Although these are currently limited to Japan, Deaver says the instructions and labels are in English, so you don’t have to worry about messing up the Arwing, Landmaster or Blue-Marine.

Even though the models are not officially for sale outside of Japan, you can do what Deaver did and get them on eBay, where you can find a whole set for as low as $28 (USD).

Qumarion 3D modeling mannequin coming soon for $750, still won’t play with your kid (video)

Trying to get convincing, natural poses out of 3D models can be tricky, so it's a relief that two Japanese universities' joint ventures, the University of Electro-Communications' ViVienne and the University of Tsukuba's SoftEther, are close to wrapping up work on their posable mannequin. Now called Qumarion, the model formerly known as QUMA uses 32 sensors across 16 body joints to translate the humanoid statue's pose to the computer screen simply by bending limbs, much like you would the legion of action figures you had when you were eight. Neither you nor your kids will be using Qumarion to storm Fort Barbie anytime soon, but the 120 frames per second sample rate over USB does mean that poses are mirrored in your modeling tools almost instantly. You also won't have much longer to wait to buy one for your fledgling anime production: the mannequin and custom modeling software from Celsys should be bundled together sometime within the summer for a comparatively frugal $750.
