NEEO Smart Remote Controls All Your Devices

NEEO_and_brain_feat

It’s possible to control many devices in your home through your smartphone. But if you’ve ever tried you’ll know it’s somewhat of a fragmented and annoying experience. You have to open one app for your lights. Another for your TV. Yet another for your alarm system. Well, the NEEO Smart Home Automation System hopes to take all those frustrations away by offering you a system that interfaces with everything, and includes a high-density touchscreen remote to navigate the OS. The system consists of two parts, the brain and the remote. The brain is a hockey puck-shaped device with more sensors and emitters than you can throw a stick at: 4 antennas for Bluetooth 4.0, Bluetooth BLE (low energy), Wi-Fi, 6LowPAN, ZigBee, Thread and Z-Wave protocols, as well as 360° infrared coverage. It stores information on about 30,000 devices, even older televisions, and knows automatically how to interact with them. The Remote features a 291ppi touchscreen (higher density that a Retina iPad), with which you control all your devices without having to switch apps or configure much of anything. “The NEEO remote comes with a unique patent-pending technology which recognizes your hand when you pick it up: sensors in the remote detect your palm to match you with your profile and display your playlists, films, and favorites, instantly.”

Think of NEEO as a universal remote on crack. It sounds pretty awesome, especially if your home is filled with AV equipment that you’re constantly struggling to control. It’ll set you back a $219 pledge on the Kickstarter campaign which is 1,000% funded at the moment. No joking, people are excited about this.

Cubic: An Omnipresent Personal Assistant with Personality

If Cubic Robotics sales pitch is to be believed, we’re one big step closer to having a personal assistant on the level of J.A.R.V.I.S. in Iron Man and Samantha in Her. Its presenting its Android-based Cubic personal assistant as someone you’d want to talk to, whether you want it to do something or not. It just seems too good to be true though.

Like Siri, Google Now and Amazon Echo, Cubic lets you send messages, look up information online, be reminded of your appointments and more via voice commands. You can also use it to control your home automation setup. Finally, it has a sense of humor and can talk about several topics – practical or trivial – at once and at length. It can even be proactive and suggest things you didn’t request. It also remembers previous conversations and can refer to it in future interactions.

The Home Cube is the main unit. It can detect voice commands from up to 25ft away. If you want to talk to Cubic on the go, you’ll need the Power Badge accessory and the Cubic mobile app. The Power Badge and the app will let you control the Home Cube as well as your phone and supported apps.

Sadly, as you’ll see in these demo videos the current Cubic prototype has a significant – awkward? – delay before each response.

When it launches, Cubic will only support English and Russian, but Cubic Robotics says it will add support for other languages if the demand is high enough. The company will also release its API so that hardware manufacturers and software developers can add support for Cubic in their products. Coders will also be able to make and sell software add-ons that enhance Cubic’s functions.

Despite its potential, if I were you I’d wait until Cubic’s final version is out and has been reviewed. But if you’re already sold you can pledge at least $195 (USD) on Indiegogo to get the Home Cube and the Cubic app as rewards. You’ll need to pledge at least $249 to get the Home Cube, the app and the Power Badge in one set.

Point Is An Alarm System That Doesn’t Watch, It Listens

point_security

Many people rely on cameras for home security, and surely it’s a good idea. But it has its drawbacks as well, such as making you feel like you’re being constantly watched, even if it is by yourself. Point, from Scandinavian firm Form Devices (Scandinavian team, based in San Francisco, actually), tries to take a softer approach to home security by doing two things: listening and sensing the air. With these, it’s able to tell if a window has been broken, or if someone is smoking, or if the humidity suddenly went straight up (maybe a water pipe broke somewhere?), and notifies you immediately. It can keep track of your home’s temperature day round, so as well as keeping your home safe it can help save you some money on energy bills. Point is also entirely customizable, so you decide which events trigger a notification. It doesn’t require complex wiring, only a yearly change of batteries. It connects to your WiFi network, and once setup can be completely forgotten, until you need it, of course.

It’s a fully funded Kickstarter project, and a $79 will get you one. Shipping in July 2015.
