GetTen One-Step Corn Kerneler Gives Corn Cobs a Close Shave

I am definitely a big fan of corn on the cob. It tastes way better than corn from a can, especially when you slather the corn on the cob with lots of butter and Cajun seasoning then grill it. I also loathe corn on the cob. The corn never ceases to get stuck as deeply as possible in my teeth so I end up picking kernels out with toothpicks the rest of the day. It’s a real love/hate relationship.

This kitchen gadget might be the perfect answer to my corn-cerns. It looks like a donut, but is made to slide over your cob and neatly cut off all the kernels. That means the same buttery, spicy flavor that you get on the cob only you don’t get as much stuck in your teeth.

I’m no corn expert, but some cobs definitely have more girth than others, and this thing is supposed to adjust to the width of the cob too. There are lots of other weird kitchen gadgets out there, but this is the one I want most. You can pick one up on Amazon for $6.99(USD).

Meater Wireless Smart Meat Thermometer

Meater Wireless Smart Meat Thermometer

Taking the temperature of meat while cooking it ensures that the food ends up exactly how you wanted it. Meater is a smartphone-connected thermometer for extremely precise readings and extremely delicious meat dishes.

I’ve often been called a maniac in the kitchen because of my obsession to use precise quantities of each ingredient, and to cook at the exact temperature the recipe calls for. Apption Labs, a Los Angeles-based company, seems to be sympathetic with the likes of me, since they have developed a wireless smart meat thermometer. With such a tool by your side, it doesn’t matter if you’re grilling the meat or cooking it in the oven, as you will always be able to check the temperature.

Here is how Apption Labs described their product:

“We know that not everyone is a master chef, so we designed Meater to allow anyone with any skill level to operate and cook any cut of meat to master chef perfection. It doesn’t matter how experienced a chef you are or if you’ve cooked the same steak 100 times before, as it often happens while cooking meat, you can’t help yourself attending to your friends and family first, then watching your cooking second. Usually, by the time you remember to check on your food, it is already too late.

With Meater, when your food has reached the correct internal temperature, you will receive a notification on your smartphone. You can finally break free from the kitchen or grill and have confidence Meater will tell you when your food is ready. The cost of Meater and 2 store bought steaks is less than the cost of one visit to a high end steak house. Once you own Meater, you can get repeatable, restaurant quality results at home and at a fraction of the cost.”

Meater is currently featured on Kickstarter, where its developers hope to raise $100,000 so that the smart thermometer makes it into production. Given the popularity of this kitchen gadget, securing one for yourself at the early bird price of $49 is rather impossible, so if you really want a Meater, you will have to pledge at least $59. Supposing that everything goes well with the crowdfunding campaign, Apption Labs should start shipping the crowdfunded devices on January 2016.

PancakeBot Prints Lions, Tigers, and Bears- Oh My!

This Kickstarter project pushes all my buttons. It’s a geeky 3D(ish) printer and it’s a kitchen gadget. It’s called the PancakeBot and it can print pancakes in just about any shape you can find online. It uses software that opens any image you find and allows you to trace that image.

The tracing data can then be sent out to the PancakeBot printer where it is turned into a pancake that you can eat. This may be the best thing to happen to breakfast since bacon. The software will run on Mac or Windows PCs.

The project was seeking only $50,000 and has raised over $68,000 with a month left to go. That means it is fully funded and shipping is expected in July 2015. You can get the entire PancakeBot printer setup for a pledge of at least $179. That’s a lot of money for pancakes, but think how impressed your kids will be.

Doctor Who TARDIS Spatula is Flippin’ Awesome

I’m not sure why, but there are certain items in my kitchen that are never where I leave them. Spatulas are one of those items I have a drawer for in the kitchen, yet they are never there when I want one. If they are there, somehow they have flipped over where the spatula part catches on the drawer leaving me cursing and yanking until the drawer pops open. I think the sock gnomes are branching out.

Spatulas have lots of uses from flipping pancakes and burgers to prying melted pizzas off the pan. Doctor Who geeks that like to cook, or at least eat, can get hands on this awesome TARDIS Spatula. The end that you use to flip stuff looks like the iconic blue police box, and the handle appears to be some sort of stamped aluminum. Said handle also says Doctor Who on it.

The flipper part is silicone so you won’t brand yourself in some sort of spatula mishap. Spatulas also make good implements for corporal punishment and could be used for your own geeky version of 50 Shades of Grey. If you’re into that sort of thing. You can get your hands on the TARDIS spatula for $19.99(USD) at ThinkGeek.

Star Wars R2-Q5 Measuring Cup Set Straight from the Death Star Kitchen

Back in April, we mentioned the R2-D2 measuring cup set and it was one of the coolest kitchen gadgets I have seen. If R2-D2 is for measuring dry ingredients in the Rebel base kitchen, R2-Q5 is the measuring cup set for the Death Star. If R2-D2 were ever lured to the dark side by cookies, this would be his new color scheme.

The body of R2-Q5 is made from four measuring cups including 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, and 1-cup units. The detachable arms turn into measuring spoons with 1/4, 1/2, 1 teaspoon, and 1/3 tablespoon sizes. The dome of the droid is marked for 1/2 cup and 1 tablespoon measurements.

It’s made from food grade plastic so you won’t die. You can get your own set for $19.99(USD) at ThinkGeek now.

Finally, A Smart Toaster

Dualit ToasterNothing worse than burning your toast first thing in the morning. One, it’s just annoying. Two, that smell can linger all day long.

Introducing a smarter toaster by Dualit. This toaster has patented Climate Sensing Toasting Cycle technology. What that means is it monitors the temperature of the toaster and what is being toasted so it can compensate for the correct toasting time. It also has a “peek and pop” function which allows you to look at the toast without having to reset the timer.

Other benefits to this toaster are a defrost setting and a bagels and buns settings that toasts one side while it only warms the other side. It comes with a removable crumb tray and a feature that allows you to lift the toasted items higher. So if you have something small in the toaster it is easier to get it out without having to defy death. You can also get an optional sandwich cage which will toast your favorite sandwich in a jiffy.

At 139.99, it is a little on the spendy side. But if you value your stress free mornings, this is your thang.

Darth Vader Toaster Gets an Upgrade

Darth Vader toasterIn 2008, we did an article about a Darth Vader toaster that was considered a must have for Star Wars junkies. Well, the toaster just got an upgrade.  The new version is shaped just like the Dark Lord’s helmet and is the ultimate addition to your kitchen counter.  The toaster burns the Star Wars logo on one side and the image of Darth Vader on the other.

This new toaster is coming out in July and can be pre-ordered from Bigbadtoystore.com to have proudly displayed on your kitchen counter for a mere $44.99.

Suzumo SushiBot pumps out 300 Kwik-E-Mart rolls per hour (video)

Image
We tend to avoid scooping up sushi whenever there's no chef in sight -- at, say, a grocery store, or a gas station -- but we've always assumed there was a human cranking out maki somewhere behind the scenes. If Suzumo's SushiBot makes it to the production line, that may no longer be the case. The compact machine doesn't exude beauty in the traditional sense, but what it lacks in elegance it easily makes up with efficiency. The contraption can plop down rice clumps for nigiri at a rate of 3,600 per hour, and -- perhaps even more impressively -- it can construct one complete sushi roll every 12 seconds, with some human assistance to place fish on the rice. We tend to like the imperfect handmade feel of the traditional Japanese delight, and we're surely not alone, so don't expect to see one these pop up in your neighborhood Asian eatery. Supermarkets, hospitals and airline caterers may be more likely to pick up a SushiBot, however. Hungry? Intrigued? Roll past the break to see how it works.
