A Disney Star Wars LARP Resort!!!?? YESSSSSS!

OMG, I so hope this happens! Apparently, Disney is thinking about making a Star Wars inspired resort that would be set on a starship. How awesome would it be to sleep inside a giant starship? The resort would let fans not only sleep and live in a starship for a few days, word is you would get to participate in your own 2-day story set in the Star Wars universe.

According to WDWNTthird party (presumably working with Disney) is surveying guests on their interest in staying in such a resort, and the images here are the concept art for the hotel. Guests would get personal interactions with Star Wars characters and would be allowed to experience the story as a participant, or simply observe.

There would be programs like flight training, ship exploration, lightsaber training, and personalized secret missions in the starship hotel and on the Star Wars area being built at the Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Word is pricing would be around $900 per person for the 2-day experience, including meals, and a pass to the theme park – not cheap, but so cool.

ThinkGeek EnCounter Fitness Quest Giver: LARPwatch

Every year ThinkGeek comes up with an April Fools’ joke product that you want to be real. The EnCounter Wearable Interactive Quest is one of those ideas. It’s a fitness tracker that turns your movements and activities into tabletop RPG quests. It even has an A.I. dungeon master that narrates your adventures via a headset.

The device goes full dork with random encounters, which completely abandon its fitness metaphor and just gives you imaginary enemies to pretend fight. Fortunately (?), you can form a party with other EnCounter users.

I think most of the EnCounter’s features are doable with current technology, but I don’t think an A.I. can substitute for a good dungeon master. Come to think of it, a dial-a-dungeon master/narrator service would be great on its own.

School Teaches Through Live Action Role-Playing: Education Through Imagination

A few weeks ago we learned about Classcraft, a software and system that adds role-playing elements to classrooms. If you thought that was cool, check out Østerskov Efterskole. It’s a boarding school in Denmark that’s built around the idea of teaching students through live-action role-playing (LARP).

In Østerskov, students are given a different role-playing theme every week. It doesn’t have to be based on fantasy or any fictional setting; for instance, in Cosmic Joke’s mini-documentary about the school, the students assumed roles based on Wall Street. Even their morning exercise was tailored to the theme.

Students are also given time to work on their live action role-playing skills, which sounds like the best grinding session ever. After the “classes” end, the kids are still allowed to role-play in the school grounds, up until bedtime.

Here’s Cosmic Joke’s video about the school:

I don’t know if this method of teaching will work in all cultures, but I would have loved going to a school like that. Head to Østerskov Efterskole’s website to learn more about the school. You should also keep an eye out for Cosmic Joke’s LARPing documentary Treasure Trapped, which is the basis for the mini-documentary.
