Transformers Masterpiece Edition MP-44 Optimus Prime is Perfectly ’80s

Growing up, all I wanted in the world for one of my birthdays was an Optimus Prime Transformer. I got it even though it was like $20 back then, which seemed like $100 today. Hasbro’s Transformers Masterpiece Edition MP-44 Optimus Prime (ver 3.0) toy looks exactly like I remember my Optimus Prime, but a much cleaner and higher quality version.

This plastic and die-cast metal toy is designed specifically to look like the ’80s version, not the new Optimus Prime from Michael Bay’s movies. It’s supposed to be the most complete Optimus Prime toy ever, and it certainly looks it.

It can transform to a robot and back to a truck, as it should. It comes with an Ion Blaster, Energon Axe, Starscream head and shoulders, hoses, blast effects, and lots more stuff.

This new version is incredibly expensive at $439.99, and can pre-ordered at Entertainment Earth if you want it as badly as I do. Shipping is set for this month, so you could give this as a Christmas gift… to me.

Dad Makes Awesome Mechwarrior Costume For Kids

Want your kids to get maximum candy this Halloween? Make something like this Mechwarrior costume, and they’ll intimidate every house into filling their trick or treat bag to the brim. This awesome kid’s mech costume was built by YouTuber Griddlock Cosplay for his kids, nieces, and nephews to show off at the Edmonton Comic Expo 2018.

This model is a Stalker J1 Mechwarrior. It can’t kill you, but it does look deadly. It has a “fully functional” cockpit, with a joystick for “navigation and control,” a cabin light, and there is even a cooling fan and a padded seat for a comfortable ride. It has a decorative 5-barrel minigun, working headlights, and a non-functional spinning radar.

The costume hides dad inside, so he can carry around one kid at a time. It looks like it probably has a lot of room on board to store all of that candy too. This will be the best costume in the neighborhood and will win you and your kids some prizes during costume contests as well.

Russian Arms Maker Reveals Mecha Concept: You Have Five Seconds to Comply

Famed Russian arms maker Kalashnikov wants to branch out from making guns, and get to the serious business of making mechs. That’s where the REAL carnage is at. Recently they were showing off their wares at the Army-2018 International Forum in Moscow, and one of its coolest designs is a mech that looks a lot like ED-209 from Robocop. It’s a concept, so right now it’s just a statue. We think.

Kalashnikov has released photos from the exhibition, and this thing is what everyone is talking about. The company says that the walker could be used to solve “engineering and combat tasks,” which we can assume means it can fix things and kill things.

We have no idea if this prototype actually moves or even walks. We know that it can look like a statue, which means that if it does work, it could use the element of surprise. Kalashnikov says continuing development of the machine will be displayed at the next military exhibition.

I’ve seen Robocop, so I know how this plays out. Except we don’t have Peter Weller to protect us like in the movie. We need a Robocop on our side before they complete this thing. Your move, creep!

Real Working “Transformer” Can Turn from Car to Robot with People Inside

I’d like to think that at some point in the evolution of Transformers, they looked as cheesy as this car one from Brave Robotics, Asratec Corp, and Sansei Technologies. The contraption is called the J-deite RIDE, which I think might translate to “Shitty Transformer.” The only Transformer lamer than this was that one that transformed into a boom box back in the ’80s. The only reason anyone ever bought that one was because it was on eternal sale.

Still, watch this thing transform. The mechanical engineering is impressive, as the two people sitting inside don’t get squished, or thrown out the doors like Bumblebee does when he transforms. And while it doesn’t look like it could drive very fast, its wheels do actually turn and steer. It can also take slow, but methodical steps. Check out the videos below to see the transforming action in person:

I’m almost as impressed with how insanely organized the workshop is in the background of the videos as I am with the robot itself.

This 15-Foot Tall Exoskeleton is Made for Racing, But Is Still Taking Baby Steps

This is the Furrion Prothesis exoskeleton.  It is a giant 8,000-pound mech that should be saved for our defense when Godzilla and his enemies show up. Apparently, it’s designed for mech racing, but it could also be used to destroy homes and small cities while stomping civilians into dust.

It is an impressive beast, but it does have some drawbacks. For instance, the exoskeleton’s battery lasts only about an hour. That’s not ideal if you’re gonna be fighting giant monsters. It can allegedly do 20 mph and jump 10 feet high, although sadly we don’t see any proof of that in the video. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that’s BS. This thing has some cool tusks though. Not sure what those are for, other than to look awesome.

Anyway, mech racing is a thing now and apparently, the X-Mech Racing League is coming soon. I’m not sure how exciting these races are going to be since these mechs don’t go all that fast. Maybe they will have obstacles and stuff, but even so, it still doesn’t seem very exciting. But what do I know? I’m just another human to be crushed under the feet of these gigantic mechanical athletes.

Jeff Bezos Tests out Gigantic Robot Suit

It must get boring being a billionaire. What do you do when making money is not a challenge anymore? Well, you could become a super villain. Looks like that is the route that Jeff Bezos of Amazon fame has taken.

At Amazon’s annual MARS (Machine learning, home Automation, Robotics and Space) conference, Bezos tried out a 13-foot tall robot designed by Korean company Hankook Mirae Technology. Notice the evil smile on his face. So Bezos practiced another world domination tool and I’m just wondering what hero is going to take this guy down when his evil plans come to fruition.

The Method-2 robot has been the source of controversy since some think that it’s a fake. Sadly there was no evidence here that it could walk, but the arms seemed to move pretty well, so there is that. Whatever. Have fun destroying some corner of the world, Jeff. Just keep those Amazon packages on time at my house.

These Guys Built a 13-Foot-Tall Walking Robot in Their Garage

It might not be the flying mech that games like MechWarrior and Titanfall have tempted us with over the years, but a team of engineers in Japan have gotten pretty far with the construction of a massive robot that’s still quite intimidating.

Roboticist Hajime and his team have been been working since 2010 to construct this 13-foot-tall, 5 ton robot which balances on two legs, and is controlled by a human sitting inside its belly. The robot, known as HJM-43 appears to finally be nearing completion.

As you can see from the videos below, it’s not exactly nimble at this point, but it’s still an impressive feat of engineering and construction, and it certainly would scare off anyone trying to break into their garage.

I’m hoping that someday they’re able to get it to walk faster, and maybe give it a jetpack and some arm and shoulder cannons too.

GKR Heavy Hitters Board Game Ready to Mech Your World

A new board game has turned up on Kickstarter and it looks pretty awesome. If you liked Mechwarrior back in the day, just go ahead and get out your credit card. The game is called GKR: Heavy Hitters and it’s about robots trying to destroy each other in abandoned cities. It’s glorious.

In case you were wondering, GKR = Giant Killer Robots. The 2 to 4 player board game comes from visual effects studio Weta Workshop and game maker Cryptozoic, and involves using your mech and pilot to either salvage resources or destroy enemy mechs along the way.

The game is currently raising production funds on Kickstarter, and has already blown through its goal. The Core Box will cost you $99. The Pilots edition with four pilot miniatures is $125. The Painter’s edition comes with unpainted models you can customize yourself for $150. Shipping is estimated for December 2017.
