Stormtroopers Playing Poker Figurine: Betting on The Empire

Because when it rains, it pours stormtroopers, hot on the white-booted heels of yesterday’s stormtrooper bookends, comes this figurine of four stormtroopers playing poker. So, if you were ever wondering what stormtroopers do in their time off from missing targets and holding books up, apparently it’s play cards. And from the look of things, one player has his blaster at his side ready to ‘Han shot first’ the rest of the gamblers in the event he loses. High stakes!

Created by Nemesis Now and available through Merchoid, the figure is cast from poly-resin and hand-painted. It measures approximately 7.2″ tall and is sure to be a conversation piece at your next get-together. Presumably, a conversation that goes something like, “Wow, there really is a market for Star Wars everything, isn’t there?”

Will stormtroopers playing poker be the new dogs playing poker? I doubt it. But did that stop me from buying a truckload of these figurines hoping to resell them on eBay for a profit? No, sadly, my credit card being declined did. Apparently, you’re supposed to pay them back monthly.

Game of Phones Encourages Players to Use Their Smartphones

One of the things my dear old wife does that annoys me to no end is to spend half a movie messing with her phone, and then gets mad when I won’t recap everything she missed so she knows what is going on. It’s not like I never use a phone, but too much is too much. If you have a bunch of friends who won’t stay off of their phones, you need this game.

It’s called Game of Phones and in the game, players pick cards that challenge them to do things like showing their best selfie, taking photos of other players, showing funny or bad texts, finding the funniest auto-correct, or telling a fortune using emoji. In all, there are more than 100 task cards.

I bet the game takes like 12 hours to complete because if your narcissist friend gets the best selfie challenge, it will take a LONG time for them to find it. You can grab Game of Phones over at ThinkGeek for $19.99(USD).

You’ll certainly want to delete all those dirty pics and your browser history before you play this one.

Harmonix Dropmix Blends Music Game with Card Game

Harmonix is no stranger to music games, with hits like Rock Band and Dance Central to their credit. Now they have teamed up with Hasbro to bring us Dropmix. This time around you won’t need to purchase a bunch of plastic instruments to play – just cards.

Dropmix is played with a pack of physical cards and a board that connects to an iOS or Android device. The board connects to a smartphone app via Bluetooth and can recognize the NFC-enabled cards. Each card represents the vocals, drums, or bass of a different song from a popular musician or band. Song mixes are then created as different cards are put down in a different order. Think of it as a mash-up of DJ remixes and strategic deck building – an interesting combo indeed.

You can play 1v1 or 2v2 player games. Points are determined by the hand of cards that are played. The app keeps track of score and can even save the songs from different play sessions. This could be another big hit for the company. We will see. It certainly is different.

The Playing Card Notebook: Draw a Card

Sure, you could use the Playing Card Notebook like a regular notebook for jotting down notes and writing a grocery list, but it seems mandatory that you should use it to make your own unique playing card deck.

playing_cards_notebook_2zoom in

Just design your cards using pencils, markers, or whatever. Design all 52 cards and then you can have a game. It is essentially a 52-card deck that is half finished and in notebook form. All the faces on each card are left blank, with only the back sides filled out.

It’s a pretty cool idea for a notebook, but then again, I’m not playing with a full deck.

Playing Card Holder

playing card band
I don’t know about you but pretty much every deck of cards I’ve ever owned has ended up with a tattered and ripped box. Why do they make the boxes the exact same size as the item that’s supposed to go inside it? Leave a little room will ya? You need the playing card equivalent of the Tokyo subway pusher guys to get your cards back in the box. Riiiiiip. And out of the junk drawer comes the ol’ rubber band. Well there’s a more elegant solution- Hold’em – band for playing cards. It’s a silicone sleeve with a king on it to hold your cards.
playing card holder
You knew this was coming but here goes- Kenny Rogers said you’ve got to know when to hold ’em, and lady, through the years, he’s right. Lucille, decorate your life and your playing cards, don’t be a coward of the country because we’ve got tonight, who needs tomorrow, why don’t you put a band around your playing cards and stay?

This deck of wonderfully illustrated Star Wars playing cards from Ashley Villers Art is super awesome. I love the artwork. May the force and at least a full house or a flush be with you.

The backs feature R2-D2 and C-3PO and the face cards feature some amazing watercolor artwork on the other side. Jar Jar is the Joker of course.

I could play poker all night with these cards, but I would probably lose because the cards are so nice that they would distract me. They are printed on 310gsm, casino quality, linen cardstock and the cards contain a black core layer so other players can’t see what you are holding. The Aces are the best!
