Sean Wotherspoon is more known among the sneakerheads for his designs and collaborations with big brands like Adidas. He has recently teamed up with the South Korean mobile giant Samsung’s version of the Galaxy Watch4 bands and the Galaxy S21 cases as a limited drop.

The Samsung Galaxy x Sean Wotherspoon Sustainable Accessories Collection has just been announced for the 2021 premium flagship and the smartwatch series. Samsung is trying to go greener, and one of its efforts is to offer more sustainable accessories. Samsung announces it in time for Earth Day. The limited-edition mobile accessories are sustainable, making them a helpful contribution to Mother Earth.

Sean Wotherspoon is a plant-based designer that came up with three watchbands for the Galaxy Watch 4 and three phone cases for the Galaxy S21. They match the same print but are set in three different colors: Pink, Sky Blue, and Yellow. There are now available together with free watch faces you can download straight from the Google Play Store.

The new watch bands and phone cases are made from 100% biodegradable and recyclable materials. The series is actually the second release of sustainably sourced accessories by Samsung. In the future, we can expect more will be revealed as the company continues to team up with other eco-conscious designers.

Samsung’s sustainability efforts seem to be going in full swing—slowly but surely. The first series from Samsung was released in September 2021 and was a collaboration with Sami Miró. The Los Angeles-based fashion designer’s collection with the tech giant included three watch faces and six watchbands for the Galaxy Watch4.

Samsung’s Galaxy for the Planet campaign is here to stay and will continue to focus on reducing the company’s environmental footprint. The effort is meant to foster more sustainable lifestyles for the community of Galaxy users. For example, plastics in mobile packaging must be eliminated by the year 2025. Another goal is to include recycled materials in all mobile products by the same year.

A more sustainable world is possible with similar efforts not only by Samsung but also by other brands. The South Korean tech brand has also launched the Samsung Certified Re-Newed. This campaign aims to offer refurbished phones with a lower carbon footprint.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 concept has a bezel-less folding screen and the S21’s camera module

Why is it called the Z Flip 3? Where’s the Z Flip 2? Irrelevant questions!

Not sure if it’s the design of the phone or the render quality, but 3D artist Giuseppe Spinelli really seems to have outdone himself with this concept phone. Spinelli’s rendition of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 sports the best parts of all of Samsung’s past phones. On the inside, it has even thinner bezels than its 2020 counterpart, a hole-punch camera for good measure, and that gorgeous vertical folding screen. Flip the phone over and it’s reminiscent of the Moto Razr, with a pretty neat secondary display, and a camera module with three lenses (a first for vertical folding phones).

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 comes as a collaboration between Spinelli (also known by his internet alias Snoreyn) and LetsGoDigital. Rumor is, it’ll be accompanied by the Z Fold 3 as well, allowing Samsung to finally become a veteran in the folding phone space. LGD reports that the Z Flip 3 will feature an improved hinge and even points out that Samsung was awarded a patent for a Z Flip with triple cameras back in 2020.

The phone’s clamshell folding design makes it incredibly compact when folded, allowing it to occupy much less space in your pocket as compared to a Z Fold-style book-shaped folding design. Samsung’s also rumored to be working on a pamphlet-style smartphone with a triple-panel double-hinge setup, but there’s really no word of when the company will officially announce it.

The thickness can often be a deterring factor for consumers. Aside from the visible crease seen in most folding smartphone screens, the thickness becomes a bone of contention between manufacturers and consumers. However, Samsung recently even registered a trademark for the term ‘Armor Frame’, implying a slimmer yet more durable outer body. This would effectively make newer devices slimmer than their older counterparts, hopefully ‘slimming’ the gap between regular smartphones and foldables.

Some of the most interesting features of the Z Flip 3 include its small secondary screen, which actually works as more than just a notification center. Just like the Galaxy Z Fold 2, the larger secondary screen is touch-sensitive, and can be used when the phone is shut. You could potentially watch videos, navigate music apps, browse through notifications, and even use the screen as a viewfinder while clicking images with that stellar 3-camera setup. Another thing that makes the Z Flip 3 interesting is its format, which allows you to use it in an L-shaped mini-laptop mode. The vertically elongated screen may be great for browsing content or scrolling, but when split in half, provides ample real estate for media on the top, and a keyboard at the bottom. It would make sense for the Z Flip 3 to continue exploiting this feature. Moreover, the Z Flip 3 could even feature virtual buttons, as suggested by Spinelli and LGD. This essentially boosts functionality and makes it easier to control volume without constantly having to reach the upper left corner of the phone. Samsung is slated to debut the Z Flip 3 at its Galaxy Unpacked event in the summer of 2021, with as many as 8 different colors to choose from.

Samsung Galaxy S21 should have taken inspiration from this refreshing rollable Samsung Stick concept!

Now while this isn’t an official Samsung concept, I can’t help but really wish it was one! CES 2021 has been ruled by a myriad combination of rolling, flexible as well as transparent screens. And while that is for sure the future of technology, there is something exciting about the cubic folded form factor of this concept. Combining technologies that aren’t outside the realm of possibility, the Samsung Galaxy Stick makes perhaps the best use of a flexible display. It rolls it up into a smart, dynamic scroll, making the Samsung Galaxy Stick perhaps the most interesting smartphone concept of this season.

The scroll-esque screen is a hat-tip to Samsung’s advancements in flexible OLED displays, and when not in use, it rolls right up into the phone’s slim, hollow, wand-like body. When you need the display, it promptly comes rolling out, turning the wand into a usable smartphone, with a nifty flexible touchscreen that maintains rigidity when unfolded. The Galaxy Stick even packs a secondary slimmer display on its body, to be used for more functional elements like calls, messages, battery indicators, etc. The secondary touchscreen is permanent, showcasing notifications when the flexible screen is rolled in, and even houses an in-screen fingerprint sensor for unlocking your smartphone.

The only caveat of this piece of sheer innovative design is the fact that the Galaxy Stick packs only one primary camera on its back… a drawback that shouldn’t really be a problem, considering the Galaxy Stick sets out to solve more pressing problems, like creating a flexible-display smartphone that doesn’t crease, and that isn’t a massive brick. The rolling display format could make a pretty unique proof-of-concept. Obviously, this makes the phone incredibly vulnerable, given that the screen needs to be mounted on a delicate mechanism that helps it roll and unroll (not to mention the fact that three out of four sides of the Galaxy Stick, when opened, are an exposed OLED display with no protection). The second-most pressing problem is obviously that a smaller, more compact phone invariably means a smaller battery too, which in the case of the Galaxy Stick, isn’t enough. While phones are getting more and more powerful, batteries aren’t getting better, they’re just getting bigger… Until someone invents a more efficient and compact battery, the Galaxy Stick may remain just a concept, but don’t lose hope! Today’s concept is tomorrow’s proof-of-concept!
