Peel is a coffee table design with different layers

Coffee tables and side tables have become more than just furniture to place your coffee cup or book on. People expect them to not just be meticulously designed but to also have more purposes than just be a simple table. There are a lot of good designs out there already but there’s always room for more of course. There are also concept designs out there just waiting to be crafted into actual furniture that people can buy and place in their living rooms.

Designer: Deniz Aktay

The Peel all-around coffee table design is something that I, for one, will want to have by my couch. The name is pretty obvious once you see the design as it is like a banana being peeled. Of course, it uses wood and not any fruit. He designed it using three plywood sheets but put together using a triangular outline. Originally, they have the same height but then they are bent at different levels so you get a table with different layers for different purposes.

The final design of the coffee table does look like a piece of wood being peeled open. So now, you’ll be able to place different items at different levels. Your coffee cup or cocktail can be placed at the tallest part for easier access. You can also place your phone at a lower level so it will not be easy to go for it when you’re supposed to be reading a book or talking to someone and not scrolling through your phone. The other level can be for some decorations or ornaments.

Because the plywood are peeled, then you get a solid triangular wood element in the middle. This not only gives your coffee table a stable center but you also get a storage area for your magazines or books. So your side table gets several purposes and you also get a nice-looking piece of furniture to adorn your living space.

Swiveling side table lets you interchange table tops and save space

When we first started working from home during the pandemic, a lot of people had to adjust their living spaces to be able to work properly. While things haven’t really returned to the old normal, there are those that are already working permanently from home or who will be working hybrid from now on. That leaves furniture designers with a lot of ideas to play around with to make this semi-permanent shift better for those who need additional stuff at home. Side tables are just some of the furniture that can be explored and improved.

Designer: Eugenie de Loynes

The Swivo table design is one thing that those working without a desk will want to have. It’s not just a piece of furniture that you can place things on while sitting on your couch, although it is definitely that. But it has three layers so you can use it for different purposes. You can even interchange the two tabletops depending on what you will be needing that day or time. The base can slide under your chair or couch to basically keep it nearer to you and saves a bit of space in your area.

While working, you can use the bigger tabletop which is 28 inches big so it can fit your laptop and even have some other devices or notebooks that you will need. Underneath, the smaller 21-inch tabletop can hold your coffee mug or book that you need to consult later on. After work, you can interchange the two so you store work stuff underneath and have your cocktail within easy reach. They can both swivel in any direction so it’s easy to move things around.

There is also a rack underneath the two table tops that you can use for your magazines or even small clothing items that you may need to be near you while working or relaxing. Despite having all these “features”, the Swivo is pretty minimalist in terms of its look and design. It is made from natural beech wood and white metal so you get a soft and natural feel and will fit right into whatever aesthetic you’re going for in your home.

This asymmetrical wooden storage doubles as a beautiful side table

Space isn’t infinite, at least not the ones inside our houses and our rooms. Every piece of furniture you add means less room for anything else. Given the premium on living spaces these days, people have been forced to be smarter about their purchasing choices, particularly when it comes to chairs, tables, and shelves. Sometimes people buy modular products they can shrink and grow as needed or storage they can shove in some unusual location like stairs. Most of the time, however, people pick designs that can serve two purposes at the same time, like this small shelf and storage space that can also be used as a low side table, even if it looks like it might tip over.

Designer: Deniz Aktay

Shelves are excellent for storing things and also displaying them at the same time. Depending on how you arranged those things, it might also be easy to retrieve them at a moment’s notice. Most shelves, however, take up a lot of space, can rarely be moved, and can’t be used for anything else. Having something that can serve multiple functions at once is definitely better, and that’s what Crossbred tries to offer on a slightly smaller scale.

The furniture’s name speaks to both its form as well as its function. It looks like an “X” or a cross, as some might call it, standing steadily on the tip of its two legs. It’s a hollow cross through and through, and all five spaces can be used to store anything from books to knickknacks. That said, given their inclined surfaces, it obviously isn’t a good idea to put something that requires a perfectly horizontal plane, like some fragile decor or even a picture frame.

One part of Crossbred, however, might be good for that. One of the cross’ top arms is chopped off, leaving a flat horizontal surface. This can be used for those objects, or it can be used as a table for a quick sip of coffee. Of course, it can be used for both, even at the same time. It’s that kind of flexibility that makes the design a more viable solution than a separate shelf and side table. Almost every nook and cranny of the storage can be used for something, like a marker for books or a holder for phones and stationery. Despite its unorthodox design, there is almost no wasted space here.

There is also a certain charm to the Crossbred’s design. Despite being made from wood that gives off a sense of warmth and familiarity, its cross shape and especially its truncated arm also give it a pinch of dynamism and whimsy. It definitely has an understated beauty to it, one that doesn’t scream to get attention. Most importantly, it is multi-functional and a perfect fit in today’s world and lifestyles, where change is constant, and people’s needs and tastes change just as much.

The Sunbeam Side Table mimics that special moment when sunlight spills through the clouds

Sunbeam Side Table Mark Mitchell Serafini 4

A side table’s main purpose is to keep small things at home within easy reach. We often find at least one in the living room beside the couch or in the bedroom by the bed. It is often neglected, but it can be helpful for the temporary placement of everyday items like remote control, a smartphone, a mug, or a book. Many side table designs are available, and some are also multi-functional (will add link to a YD side table listicle). Most options offer more than an everyday table, but not many may inspire people like the Sunbeam Side Table.

Designer: Mark Mitchell

The side table doesn’t have to be an afterthought as it can also be a significant element to infuse style into any room. It can bring balance and harmony to an otherwise bland corner. The Sunbeam Side Table is a primal example of that.

Sunbeam Side Table Mark Mitchell Serafini

The furniture piece beautifully captures the natural phenomena called “rays of god” with its design and gives a peaceful, celestial mood. “Rays of god” are sunbeams that pierce through gaps in clouds resulting in sunlight shining in all directions. As the name suggests, they present ethereal and beautiful images in the sky. Like rays of god, the Sunbeam Side Table offers a sense of poetry and romanticism you don’t often see on other tables in the market.

Sunbeam Side Table Mark Mitchell Serafini 5

Sunbeam Side Table is created from a collaboration between designer Mark Mitchell and Serafini, an Italian company known for craftsmanship and tradition when it comes to marble production. This piece is made from a single block of marble, making it very sturdy and stable. The material is skillfully carved to hold eleven spruce wood “sun rays” extending from the top point, sans the need for any glue.

The “sun rays” of the table serve as the tabletop, casting radial-patterned shadows on the smooth, angled marble surface when lit from above. One drawback of this elegantly designed side table might be its functionality. Because there are gaps between the wood “sun rays” tabletop, if you put a small object on it, it might slip through.

Sunbeam Side Table Sketch

The Sunbeam Side Table evokes a distinct charm that can bring a ray of sunshine to your room and to your heart. It enlivens the space and leaves you an image of heaven with the clouds and sunbeams, at least for me. Of course, it has a bit of mystery, but it can inspire and tell people there is hope and that tomorrow will be a brighter day.

This welded steel side table blurs the line between function and art

All We Value Sticks Table Gessato 3

Side tables are usually placed beside other furniture items in the home, office, or hotel lobby; however, they are constantly ignored because of their size. This happens especially when the furniture, a sofa set, for example, is overwhelmingly large for a room. Such tables should not be regarded as just another furniture piece because they serve a great purpose—storage or a place for the items you want within easy reach. Without these side tables, the room can look too messy or cluttered, so it’s important what you’re buying is of the right size, fits your style, and matches the room’s aesthetics. But for a side table to be memorable, it must add a sense of playfulness to the space and offer a sense of wonder to everyone who will see it for the first time.

The Sticks Table is a steel side table that can be regarded as an art piece or a sculpture with its unique shape and form. Designed by All We Value, the side table is a product of the design studio’s imagination, as shown in its distinctive design. It appears like sticks randomly joined together to hold a structure but here, you only see one long bar holding a tabletop on one end, while two shorter legs handle the central leg, giving the side table solidity, structure, and balance.

All We Value Sticks Table Gessato 5

This side table looks like something you could get from Ikea because of the several choices of multiple powder-coated colors. It could be if it also boasts a flat-pack design, but it doesn’t, mainly because this sculptural steel side table is welded, so there is no way you can disassemble them. Nuts and bolts may not be enough if the designer decided to use them on the tubular shapes. The base is sculptural and presents a unique silhouette (like a typography), while the tabletop maintains a simple round shape.

The Sticks Table can be used for just about anything, as it’s not limited for your home or the bedroom. You can use it for work or in areas that require you to plop your things on the floor for quick tasks like a photography studio. It can look great in a modern contemporary living room or bedroom, especially with the vivid colors available: Blue, Black, Orange, White, and Green. It doesn’t have any curve or hole in the tabletop so you can easily transport it from one room to another like the Wavelet or the Grab Side Table. With the Sticks table, you probably do not want to move it because it already delivers a sense of contentment, wonder, and joy just by standing still on its own, looking pretty, practical, and playful.

Union brings you side table and magazine rack in one

For people who live in smaller spaces like apartments or condominiums, we always look for furniture and appliances that can perform more than one function. You need to maximize the space that you have so you look for things that are 2-in-1 or can serve as more than just one thing. We’ve featured a lot of multi-functional concept products here on the website and I personally hope that some of these can become actual products. I wouldn’t mind having some of them in my place.

Designer: Deniz Aktay

This concept is for a side table that can also serve as a magazine rack. The idea is for these two staples for a living room to be found in just one form. You have a cylindrical shape to serve as your side table where you can place your drink, keys, the book you’re currently reading, or whatever you need to put down, probably next to the sofa or your chair. But aside from that side table, you also get a connected magazine rack where you can place your, you guessed it, magazines. It can also store books, papers, or whatever will fit into the rack.

What makes Union stand out is that there is a nice interaction between two geometrical shapes: the circular and cylindrical side table and the triangular shape of the two planes. They are not just placed next to each other but they actually intersect as part of the table is inside the rack. Or depending on your perspective, part of the triangular rack is inserted into the cylindrical table. Either way, in just one piece of furniture, you already get multiple uses for it.

Aside from being functional, Union actually is pretty decorative, especially if your house’s theme is wood or timber. The cylindrical part uses a darker wooden color while the magazine rack has a lighter color. The contrast of the shades of wood actually works instead of being distracting. So you also get sculpture-like furniture that can be a conversation piece as well.

Walden Furniture Series unveils new design classics you can shop for the home

YUUE Design Studio Walden Series

Fixing up a new house or an apartment can be really fun and, at the same time, exhausting. However, it can be a delightful experience if you know exactly what to do and where to buy stuff. Shopping should be a joy and not a chore, but it can only happen if you have already identified your needs and wants and the aesthetics and style that work for you.

Furniture shopping is always a good idea, but one needs to know what to buy so no time is wasted. One’s taste may change depending on needs and location, and even season in life, so it is essential that important factors are considered. Of course, there is the budget you can spend, the space where the pieces will be fixed, the features of the furniture items, durability and comfort, plus the overall look.

Designer: Weng Xinyu (YUUE Design Studio)

Walden Side Table

Walden Furniture Series

The trend for 2022 is curved furniture with soft lines; that is why you will notice that many furniture makers’ designs and items come with curves and soft arcs. The use of simple and natural materials like wood is also more prevalent, especially since there is a global campaign to go sustainable. The YUUE Design Studio team aims to develop affordable alternatives to iconic designs and expensive pieces. With the intention to craft new design classics in the modern age, designer Weng Xinyu decided to utilize solid wood. This is also so the elements can easily adapt to the design requirements and needs of the consumers.

The Walden Series of furniture pieces is a product of the designer’s special journey in life and career. Weng Xinyu is honest enough to say his journey has been lonely, coming with lots of contemplations, gains, and pains, but we can see the beauty that resulted from his different experiences. The new furniture series includes three mainly useful items: a Side Table, a Floor Lamp, and a Lounge Chair.

Walden Side Table Series

The Walden furniture pieces all present modern minimalism and each product shows elegance and simplicity, starting with the side table. The handmade wood table comes with precisely crafted parts offering a mechanical fit. There is a round tabletop that is the same size as the base ring, but the base is slightly thicker for added support and stability. The combination of the two offers visual balance while a wooden stick joins the two sliding parts. Another advantage of this design is that it can be combined with other pieces. Storage is also a plus because it can be slid easily under the bed or a sofa.

Walden Lounge Chair Details Concept

The Lounge Chair is yet another 3D puzzle-like furniture piece you can display and use at home. It uses simple materials such as leather sheets and wooden boards, and the flatpack design makes it easy to assemble and disassemble. There is some sort of geometry interplay here, as seen in the combination of the lines and curves.

Lounge Chair

The wooden boards are designed to be inserted into each other while still allowing space to contain a human body. The designer made sure there was a clever distribution of weight and pressure so the boards won’t be stressed. Check out the smoothened edges of the wood that offer comfort, especially on parts touched by the body.

YUUE Design Studio Floor Lamp

Last is the Floor Lamp as another minimalistic item ideal for a minimalist home— coming with a three-dimensional look– combining a surface, line, and a dot. This functional floor lamp features a rotatable lamp holder that is also helped by magnets so you know it is sturdy enough. It can be used as both a reading lamp or an upright as it can illuminate an object or a surrounding. At the base, there are three slots where you can fix the pole when you want to adjust the height.

Cowboy Side Table doubles as a bookmark

Cowboy Side Table Designer Deniz Aktay

It seems we can never escape Deniz Aktay and his designs. This German furniture designer has become prolific when it comes to creating concept furniture pieces, especially tables. Every table he designs gives us something to think about.

The latest creation is the Cowboy Sidetable Bookmark. It’s a side table and a bookmark in one that lets you keep things organized. If you’re a bookworm, you will want to have one and have your latest book to rest on such a table.

Designer: Deniz Aktay

Cowboy Side Table

The side table allows things to be at an easy reach. Usually situated beside a sofa or your favorite armchair, you can place your drink on the table for when you want a nightcap. Leave your smartphone on the tabletop, so you don’t miss any important call or message. And when you need to take a break from reading a book, just put the last page face down on the book rest.

Cowboy Sidetable

The Cowboy Sidetable is called such because the tip that protrudes appears like a saddle, especially when there is a book on top. The tabletop has an opening in the middle where cables can go through so the surface won’t look too cluttered. The wooden part that looks like an A supports the metal tabletop. The wooden portion is actually two separate pieces joined near the tip.

We see the surface with brushed metal finish enclosing the two wooden tips. The black and wood combination offers a casual look and feel, perfect for those into minimalist aesthetics. Deniz Aktay’s passion for designing furniture makes his creations ideal for those looking for simplicity and originality. His works often combine proper elements and detailing, making every piece challenging to create yet resulting in an exciting product.

Cowboy Side Table

Deniz Aktay has become a recent favorite here with all his unique designs. The Tie Stool is an oddly satisfying stool design that uses three interlocking strips of wood. The Unstable Table makes use of the center-of-gravity trick. That Wavelet Table’s curled side works as a handle similar to the Grab Side Table that lives up to the grab-and-go expectation.

That Tadashi Table comes with a stomach that may be perfect for storage or for your cat. The Plot Twist Bookshelf still carries the intrigue of your favorite mystery books. The bookshelf can complement the newly designed Cowboy Sidetable as it can serve as a bookmark for that title you’re currently reading. Definitely, the designer won’t stop with this creation so expect more will be introduced.

Tadashi Side Table comes with a stomach for extra storage

Tadashi Side Table

There is no stopping creative designers from coming up with new side tables. There are plenty of choices now compared to before as the design world is moving towards innovative and aesthetically pleasing furniture items.

There seems to be a theme among Deniz Aktay’s designs. He has already designed a slew of side tables with some bending action on the tabletops. This time around, the tabletop bends on one side, turning into a transport handle. Like his other designs, the Wavelet and the Rool, the Tadashi shows corners that bend. There is no curve, but the lines and edges offer different surfaces.

Designer: Deniz Aktay

Tadashi Side Table

The side table appears to be two hallow cubes intersecting. The effect is a space underneath for storage. The area can be used for your books or other knickknacks. It can also be a space for your pet cat or dog where they can just lounge or sleep. It can also be used to store cushions, pillows, and blankets.

The space is like a stomach which can be used to store anything. You can leave it empty for a truly decluttered look. The wood finish offers a natural warmth, so it can fit most interiors.

Tadashi Side Table

Tadashi Side Table

In some ways, this Tadashi Side Table, reminds us of the Plot Twist Bookshelf. You can place it anywhere—the living room, the doorway, or the children’s bedroom. It can work as a side table or a stool where you can tie your shoelace before going out. It can be a toy storage, but the edges may not be safe for younger children.

The side table’s form makes it appear like a sculpture or art piece that can be another conversation starter. You see, the side table doesn’t have to be boring. It’s a furniture piece that can bring life to any room. It can serve as both a table and as a decor. The more unique the design is, the more attractive a table can be.

Tadashi Side Table

The German furniture designer Deniz Aktay is really serious about design. He doesn’t just show off something that looks nice or unique. He makes things that are really useful and innovative. He creates timeless pieces that people of different ages will love.

Aktay is becoming a recent favorite here as his works are really interesting. We’ve seen the Plot Twist Bookshelf and the Pet Table. The Triforce side cabinet is exquisite and we also can’t forget The Levels Table.

Low Wall turns a simple side table into a bookshelf

For a book lover, and let’s face it, hoarder like me, almost every space in my house is filled with books. I have a main bookshelf, shelves on my work table, bedside tables, movable storage, and yes, even the floor is littered with books. I don’t live in a big space and so I have to make the most out of my existing furniture and the floor. So if I see concept designs that will give me more ideas on where to place more of my books, it immediately catches my eye.

Designer: Leemok Studio

Low Wall is a concept for a side table that can also function as a small bookshelf for those that only have a few books to display or those like me who need all the help I can get. The table’s legs are actually pillars that go through the top and so instead of just having furniture on the side of your sofa to put trinkets, drinks, and other small stuff on, this becomes a tiny bookshelf to house magazines, books, and other stuff you need to place on the side.

The design for the side table/bookshelf is pretty simple but durable. The renders show that it can fit into a flat box, with the pillars separate from the circular tabletop. You will then assemble it by putting the “legs” through the top with the slats to fit them and create “low hills” or shelves not just on top but also at the bottom with the legs. The lower part has taller shelves so you can place your bigger coffee table-type books there while the top is shorter but can still fit the books you want at easy rich.

The designer didn’t specify what kind of wood is used for the concept design but there seems to be different shades and types of wooden finishes for the renders. It would be nice if there are options since you would want your side table to fit in with the aesthetics of your living room or bedroom. My books that are currently “unhoused” and lying on my floor and sofa would definitely welcome this kind of storage eventually.
