Old Values with a New Look

We were blown away (and still kind of are) when Honda unveiled the Urban EV Concept last month. As I mentioned before and I’ll repeat it – The urban EV concept evoked an emotional connection unlike any other car showcased this year. The urban EV concept looks like something conceived in the 80s, with its off-white curvy exterior shape, similar to Honda’s earliest models. The side panels and lighting appear to be identical to the Urban EV Concept while exuding a sporty, forceful personality. The Sports EV Concept has adopted a lower and broader shape for this design style – draping the body over the two front wheel arches and dipping across the bonnet to accentuate the sporty nose that Honda has gone for here. This car is just cool – really cool. Similar to the Urban EV Concept, we’re going to have to wait until the Tokyo Motor Show kicks off this weekend to see more of it.

The Future is Here and Now

As the time counts down to this year’s Tokyo Motor Show, we get more and more teasers of what’s to come – one of those teasers is the beautiful Mazda Kai Concept. With some similarities to the RX-Vision Concept (released at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show), the Kai is edgy, sleek and a large amount of personality. What stands out for me the most here is the genuinely gorgeous aesthetic of the side panels. The surface pulls in after the front wheel arch and is dragged back out to house the rear wheels – the way this plays with the lighting is never going to stop putting a smile on my face. An honorable mention is the dazzling roof on the Mazda Kai. The windshield curves at the top, to continue down the roof, splitting in the center giving way to an aerodynamic body sculpture which once again adds to the clean and sharp look of the Kai. Having to wait until the Tokyo Motor Show, we’re going to have to hold out until then, but this hatchback motor is certainly raising a lot of eyebrows in interest to see more.

We're live from CEATEC 2012 in Chiba, Japan!

Japan's annual electronics expo is about to kick off in the Tokyo suburb of Chiba, and we've settled down for the week to deliver a peek inside Makuhari Messe, where local carriers will demonstrate their R&D wares, a fair share of robots are expected make their debut and component manufacturers will provide a hint of what's to come. And, because the Tokyo Motor Show is held only once every two years, that winter exhibition will make a smaller appearance within these Chiba halls, with vehicle designers showing off their latest contributions to the automotive industry. The fun begins in just a few minutes, when dozens of diligent guards will lift the gates to the show. As always, you can follow along from home without spending a single yen. Just keep an eye on our homepage, or head over to the CEATEC 2012 tag for a complete roster of this year's show coverage.
