Back to the Future II: DIY Auto Adjusting Jacket

Back to the Future day is upon us this week, and we’ve had all manner of fun gadgets and gimmicks pop up to celebrate the 2015 arrival of Marty and Doc in Back to the Future Part II. But between the hoverboards and self-lacing shoes, I totally forgot about the self-adjusting jacket that Marty wore.

bttf_self_adjusting_jacket_1zoom in

Well Instructables contributor push_reset remembered, and proceeded to build her own automatically-adjusting jacket. She and JON-A-TRON built this goofy bit of impractical fashion by using an off-the-shelf costume, and a 3D-printed pulley mechanism, cables and micro gearmotors to pull up the jacket’s sleeves.

The effect isn’t as convincing as it was in the movie, but it’s still fun. Now, all push_reset needs to do is make a self-drying jacket and we’ll be all set.

Back to The Future 2015 Round UP!

Back-to-the-future-cake 2015

October 21, 2015. A big date in cinematic history. It’s the date of Marty McFly and Doc Emmett Brown (along with Jennifer) arriving in the future and getting mixed up in an unfortunate chain of events that are Back to the Future II and III. Robert Zemeckis, the director of the three films has said that he’ll never approve of a remake as long as he lives which is good. Some things should be left as they are, forever. Despite it being over 25 years since the last movie came out we’re still fascinated with this awesome time travelling trilogy, and as you can see, we’ve deal with it quite a lot in the past. Here are our best posts, articles and stories about the films and everything that surrounds them.

Marty and Doc Travel to the Real 2015

The 2015 that Doc and Marty time traveled to in Back to the Future Part II was pretty awesome. Way cooler than our 2015. I’m still waiting for a decent hoverboard and those self-lacing sneakers. Flying cars too. We have the internet though. That’s pretty cool. I just wanted more out of 2015.

The highlight of our future seems to be selfies, worshiping the Kardashians and – I just threw up in my mouth. The Kardashian thing is the worst. Check out this funny video in which CollegeHumor imagines if Doc and Marty traveled to our 2015 instead of the fictional 2015 they visited in the movie.

Maybe they can change our timeline and fix a few things while they’re there. One can only hope.

Back to the Future DeLorean Golf Cart: 8.8 Holes per Hour

Dual Divisions gave golfing a pretty heavy dose of geekery with its modded Back to the Future-themed golf cart. Red Deer College commissioned the cart for its 30th annual golf tournament, thereby commissioning it for all its annual golf tournaments.

back_to_the_future_delorean_golf_cart_by_dual_divisions_1zoom in

Dual Divisions fabricated the DeLorean-style front end as well as the side and rear panels out of metal. The cart’s console and Mr. Fusion are made of metal as well. The latter doubles as a cooler and cup holder. On the console are LED-lit arcade buttons connected to an Adafruit Audio FX board, which in turn pushes sound to a pair of Panasonic speakers. The board is loaded with music, quotes and sound effects from the BTTF films. Finally, an Android tablet mounted under the roof displays a virtual version of the time circuit.

The videos below were taken by Lucas Evanochko, who took care of the cart’s electronics:

Skip to about 2:13 in the video below for some of the sound effects.

Here are more shots of the golf cart courtesy of Lucas:

Suddenly, golfing’s looking a whole lot more fun.

Back to the Future Trilogy: 30th Anniversary Re-Release Heads to Blu-ray/Digital

This post brought to you by Universal. The content and opinions expressed below are that of Technabob.

Back to the Future is one of my all-time favorite films. In fact, the whole trilogy is pretty awesome. But it’s the 1985 original that really kicked things off, and it’s celebrating its 30th anniversary now. Robert Zemeckis’ little popcorn flick about a teenager from the ’80s who must go back in time to make sure his parents actually met has turned into a cultural phenomenon that’s still as popular as ever.

bttf_flux_capacitor_tb_2zoom in

There are numerous pop culture memes which owe a debt to the franchise, from the DeLorean time machine to Hoverboards, Self-lacing Nikes, and classic lines like “Great Scott!,” “Make like a tree, and get out of here!, ” and “McFly!” My personal collection of Back to the Future memorabilia includes such wonders as this LEGO DeLorean, which I look at on my desk every day:

So you can say that I’m pretty excited that Back to the Future is getting a special re-release this October 21 on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital formats. You’ll also be able to see the movie yet again on the big screen, along with live events to coincide with this very important date in the Back to the Future timeline. Yes, 10-21-2015 is the date that Marty and Doc land in the future in Back to the Future II, and which laid the groundwork for many technological dreams that we’ve been hoping for ever since. Hoverboards and Self-Lacing Nikes are already in the works, but I never got my head-mounted CD player.

October 2015 is also the month in which the Chicago Cubs are supposed to finally win the World Series – which could actually happen the way they’re playing this year.

The Collector’s Edition Blu-ray is the most comprehensive release of the series ever, and a must-have for serious fans like me. It includes all three movies, the complete Back to the Future animated series, a disc packed with two hours of bonus content, and collectible packaging that looks like a flux capacitor. Features includes a new short called Doc Brown Saves the World! starring Christopher Lloyd,  as well as behind the scenes, documentary footage, and deleted scenes among many other bonuses. Sweet!

You can pre-order the 30th anniversary edition from Universal now, and it’ll drop on October 21, 2015. Then, keep up on the latest Back to the Future anniversary festivities by following hashtag #BTTF2015, or the official channels on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

Back to the Future Blu-ray Box Set Includes New Doc Brown Short

In Back to the Future II, Marty and Doc jump forward by 30 years, and the date set on their DeLorean time machine was October 21, 2015. That date is nearly upon us, and to celebrate, a new Back to the Future Blu-ray box set is coming to a store near you.

bttf_flux_capacitor_1zoom in

Among its many features, the box set will have something very interesting for fans of the franchise to enjoy. Christopher Lloyd will be revisiting his Doc Brown character in a brand new short called Doc Brown Saves the World.

The short will be a box set exclusive. Other than what we can glean from the title, the plot of the short is unknown, but I’m looking forward to seeing what they have store for us.

Back to the Future II Sports Almanac Sells For $7,000

Sadly, the time has passed when you could make some serious money with this Grays Sports Almanac featured in Back to the Future Part II, but at least one person was able to profit off of it. Surprisingly, that person was not Biff.

grays_sports_almanac_1zoom in

The original almanac prop from the movie just sold for £4,750 (~$7,200 USD) in an auction for movie props. Great Scott!

This wasn’t the only BttF item that sold. A prototype Hill Valley High School letterman jacket sold for £600.
The torn phone book page Marty used to find Doc Brown went for £1,700. A plutonium fuel cell sold for just £3,000. Marty’s fedora from Part II went for £5,000. And two USA Today front pages from 2016 featuring Marty McFly Jr’s escapades sold for £1,800 and £2,750. I’m kind of surprised that some of this stuff didn’t go even higher.

I could have used this book several years ago and become a millionaire, but sadly that didn’t happen.

Back to the Future Funko POP! Delorean Won’t Hit 88 MPH

A few days back, I talked a bit about some cool Vinyl Idols’ Back to the Future action figures with the crazy eyes. At the time, I wished there was a DeLorean to go with them. While it’s not in the same style, Funko now has a DMC-12 to go along with your Back to the Future collection.

btf-deloreanzoom in

The car includes a Marty figure with the trademark Funko POP! beady black eyes. Marty is a standard POP! size at 3.75-inches tall, and can be pulled out of the toy car.

I only wish the wheels could turn on the car. I’d still push it around and would need to work out exactly how to make flaming skid marks on my desk as well. You can grab the set from ThinkGeek for $24.99(USD).

Back to the Future Vinyl Idols: Great Scott, My Eyeballs!

Back to the Future introduced us to Doc and Marty back in the ’80s and spawned a memorable three-flick franchise that was rather extraordinary for its time.

What you see here are some vinyl collectables of Marty and Doc that don’t look much like the characters from the movies. Doc has some sort of chameleon eye thing going on.

btf-1zoom in

Doc has his remote control clipboard and Marty is holding the camera and skateboard. The action figures are 8-inch scale and are part of the Vinyl Sugar collection that also has those sweet Ghostbusters figures I talked about before.

You can get hands on Doc or Marty at ThinkGeek for $19.99(USD) each. Too bad there is no scale DeLorean, that car was as much a character in the film as the actors were. Though it might look weird with chameleon headlights.

Build Your Own Back to the Future Hoverboard

You don’t have to be from October 21, 2015 to build your own Back to the Future hoverboard you know. This video will show you how. It actually looks very simple and the board looks just like the one in the movie!

bttf_hoverboard_1zoom in

This latest video from AweME’s Prop Shop shows you how to build your own hoverboard for less than $35. Host Dustin McLean will walk you through the entire process. All you need are a few basic supplies, some time and patience, and of course, these decals.

The end result looks pretty cool and you will have a hoverboard to use for cosplay, or just to display on your shelf and admire. Sadly, the board will not work on water – or hover – but you can’t have everything.
