Upgrade Your Sleep: World’s First Bed with Sleep Tracking, Automatic Adjustments, and Vibration Alarm

If you asked anyone in the 1920s what a bed would look like in 2023, the ErgoSportive is probably the kind of answer you’d get.

Ever so often, a product comes along that completely shatters the preconceived notion of what consumers want/expect from it. Nobody thought speakers needed a voice assistant in the 2000s, but in 2014, Amazon changed everything with the Alexa. Similarly, up until 10 years ago, nobody knew a smart bed could be as advanced as the ErgoSportive, but here we are in 2023 with a bed that automatically adjusts the head and feet sections, has built-in non-contact sleep trackers that monitor your sleep activity, an anti-snoring feature that raises your head when it detects snoring, and built-in vibration modules that use gentle physical nudges to wake you up instead of a noisy blaring alarm. The headboard of the ErgoSportive has built-in LEDs that create the perfect ambient environment for you to relax, as well as USB ports to charge all your gadgets. Now that, my friends, is what beds of the future look like…

You spend a third of your life in bed, so why does it always have to be flat? The bed isn’t just a place for sleeping, it’s also a place for relaxing, meditating, reading, snacking, watching Netflix and even chilling if you play your cards right. ErgoSportive’s design keeps that in mind, with its adjustable format that can lift your head or your legs, or even orient itself like a poolside lounge chair on demand. The elevation features aren’t just for comfort, they help alleviate snoring, relieve joint pain, help boost recovery, and prevent stomach-sleeping or side-sleeping, which can be problematic for some people. Customizable presets let you instantly go from a flat-bed to your favorite reading position or TV-watching position, and a dedicated Zero-G button sets the bed in a zero-gravity position that simulates the feeling of weightlessness or zero gravity. (The concept of zero gravity beds originated from NASA’s research on the effects of zero gravity on astronauts’ bodies during space travel).

Access your personalized sleep data and receive customized recovery recommendations through the ErgoSportive App. Share your sleep report with your coach, trainer, physician or loved ones.

More than just being a shapeshifting entity that you sleep on or relax in, the ErgoSportive is also positioned as a wellness device. Sure, beds are for relaxation and recovery – but why is it that you need a smartwatch to measure how relaxed or recovered you are while asleep? Non-contact sensors within the ErgoSportive measure your sleep cycle, tracking sleep stages and health-metrics without you needing to wear any appliance or product on your body. Health metrics get shared on ErgoSportive’s smartphone app, where you can access the data as well as toggle features like the bed’s anti-snore functionality. The Anti-Snore feature works by raising your head gently if it detects snoring. By doing so, it prevents your tongue and/or palate from blocking your breathing pathways as you sleep, alleviating snoring by allowing you to breathe better. Moreover, integration with Garmin’s devices and wearables allows the ErgoSportive to work in tandem with your smartwatch or fitness tracker to determine recovery and sleep schedules for peak health. That’s right… your bed is effectively a fitness-wearable!

Ultimately though, a bed is a bed, and even though the ErgoSportive has its handful of health-focused features… it still nails the basics extremely well. The bed comes with the ErgoMattress that has a memory foam construction with ErgoEdge™ Support that’s perfect for both back as well as side-sleepers. The mattress lining comes infused with bamboo charcoal for its anti-moisture and anti-odor properties, and advanced airflow technologies ensure proper ventilation so you don’t wake up in a pool of sweat. The mattress aside, the ErgoSportive bed’s headboard also comes with a built-in LED strip that lets you set ambient lighting at night or even during the day. Whether you’re relaxing, reading a book, or just lazing in bed, the dimmable LED strip is arguably a brilliant accessory for the bed… but it doesn’t outshine the fact that the ErgoSportive also comes with USB ports to charge your gadgets. Given that most bedsides have only one or two plug points, and the fact that the ErgoSportive needs to be plugged in, not being able to charge your gadgets by your bedside can be quite a bummer. USB ports on the ErgoSportive fix that, letting you juice your phone, tablet, or wearables right by your bed while you sleep. Moreover, if your home’s prone to power outages, the bed has failsafes too, including automatically going back to its flat position in the event of a power cut.

What the ErgoSportive so expertly does is cover all the aspects a bed needs to, in the best ways possible. It’s the perfect place to rest, but it’s also the perfect place to recover after a workout, or to watch movies, or read a book, or just recharge your phone while you recharge at night. The ErgoSportive takes smart beds to the next level by tracking and monitoring your sleep, giving you the insights you need to be healthier and live better. Each ErgoSportive bed comes with a remote that lets you control it, with multiple buttons that toggle the different features or even the bed’s various presets. The ErgoSportive bed comes in three sizes – Twin XL, Queen, and Split King, with a 30-night trial for the bed itself and a 100-night trial for the ErgoMattress.

The thin, flexible strip worn on the finger can generate energy when you are sleeping or simply doing nothing since the sweat from your body powers it. As the fingertips produce exponentially more sweat than any other body part, they are virtually an abundant source to put to good use. The strip has carbon foam electrodes that absorb the sweat, and a chemical reaction is initiated between the lactate and oxygen molecules. The result is electricity generation that’s stored in capacitors to power our modern power-hungry wearables. According to co-first author Lu Yin, “This work is a step forward to making wearables more practical, convenient and accessible for the everyday person.”

Oblak is essentially a smart speaker that walks users through their nightly sleep routines. Through the use of smart technology, Oblak introduces each individual user’s optimal bedtime environment ideal for effective rest. Many factors can contribute to sleep deprivation, but in today’s world, the overconsumption of media on our smartphones is perhaps the leading cause. In order to step away from smart technology doing the work for us, Stanisic takes a holistic approach instead, encouraging users through Oblak to make conscious decisions that benefit their sleep patterns. For instance, Oblak uses NFC technology to register when its user is ready for bed.

Sleep Experience Center is essentially a sleeping and living pod that can be stationed in any setting from an airport to a remote science research center. With a simple interface that comprises just three buttons, the AROMEO Sense lets you choose between Sleep, Relax, and Focus modes that work at different times of the day depending on the need of the hour and the activity. The Sleep mode uses melatonin-boosting lights, sedative aromas, and gentle sounds to lull you into a state that helps you drift off easily. The Relax mode works better while you’re meditating or just unwinding after a rough day, with light that helps guide your breathing patterns, gentle fragrance, healing sounds to lower your stress levels. The Focus mode helps guide you into a state of wakefulness and awareness, with cool blue lights that stop your body from producing melatonin – the sleep hormone.

Lune, a holistic training and monitoring system for people with sleep apnea trouble, encourages sound sleep by stimulating oral muscles around the throat by means of pulsating electrodes. Inspired by the male frog’s mate calling technique, which is when the male frog lifts his head upwards in order to produce mighty ribbits, Lune incorporates an integrated airbag into the sleeping assistive device in order to maintain an upright position for their head, which in turn promotes steady, open airflow. Then, during sleep, Lune uses sensors to determine whether or not the user’s breathing canals are blocked.

An unlikely area of intervention for an automotive company, Ford’s now designing self-adjusting beds! Designed as a part of the Ford Interventions series, which uses automotive technology to remedy everyday problems, this is the Lane-Keeping Bed. As its name suggests, it prevents bed-space-hoggers from occupying more than half of the bed’s space. We move around a lot when we sleep (some more than others). This often results in inequality when it comes to bed-sharing. That’s where Ford’s quirky Lane-Keeping Bed helps bring back the balance. It uses Ford’s Lane-Keeping Aid technology, which monitors road markings to help guide the driver back into the appropriate lane, and a conveyor-mounted mattress that can roll/shift to always make sure your partner (or you) occupies the correct amount of bed space.

The Top 10 bed designs that promise to reinvent your sleep!

Our beds are our safe haven, our ultimate safe space, where we can just nestle in after a really bad day, and let go of all our worries! On my days off, I love snuggling up in bed, watching some Netflix, while munching on my favorite snacks. I’m sure most of us share the same sentiment. Our bed has literally always got our back. But finding the perfect bed can be a dilemma! We all have different requirements when it comes to the ideal bed, and just because a bed works perfectly for someone else, doesn’t mean it’ll work perfectly for you as well. Hence, we’ve curated a diverse collection of super comfy, cozy, and innovative bed designs that’ll tempt you into immediately jumping onto them. These beds promise to soak up all your stress!

Pandemic or no pandemic, we can all agree that this is the ultimate bed just like its name states – the Hariana Tech Smart Ultimate Bed! The $2800 price tag is justified with a myriad of features that make it perfect for a weekend in or even work from home – let’s be honest, they both feel the same right now. You know we always have to get up to get stuff before we settle into relax mode? Well, this bed was designed to have everything you will need to relax within your bed frame. It has an integrated reclining massage chair with a remote, a built-in Bluetooth speaker, a bookshelf, a reading lamp, an air cleaning system, an area to plug-in and charges your devices, a foot-stool that opens up for extra storage, and a pop-up desk for the ultimate WFH setup, Netflix marathon or cozy reading hours.

Suspended on a single leg, the Fluttua Bed by Lago Design truly looks like it’s floating in the air! The bed can be installed on various kinds of walls, handle up to 240kg of weight and it’ll transform your snooze session into one magical experience. Quite honestly the bed reminds me of Aladdin’s Magic Carpet! I really wouldn’t mind jumping on it and sailing effortlessly through my dreams like Jasmine. That is the closest I’ll probably get to acting like a princess!

Titled the Work/Sleep Balance, this morphing piece of home decor is ideal for tiny apartments, serving two purposes within a small footprint. The desk top is large enough to accommodate most of your work accouterments, while the cabinet on the side features a collapsible tri-axial bed frame that opens up to become a base for the mattress, which rolls right up and slides into a compartment in the desk’s back. The transformation takes around 2-3 minutes, allowing you to efficiently use your space to work during the day, and catch some shut-eye during the night!

Designed by Hi-interiors, the HiBed is quite frankly the bed of my dreams. The second generation in their smart beds, this one is a more minimal and sleeker version of its predecessor, the HiCan. A modern take on the traditional canopied bed, the smart(er) bed is versatile and integrates effortlessly with any and all furnishing. Equipped with a built-in 4K projector that can be synced with a series of devices to binge-watch movies/TV shows on a 70-inch retractable screen, the HiBed is the epitome of in-bed relaxation. A built-in surround sound system with invisible speakers makes the bed feel more like a movie theatre.

Just a mere 100mm thick when folded, the Extendable Flatpack Paper Bed is quite incredible for a few reasons. Made entirely from paper, the bed uses an accordion-style folding mechanism to allow the bed to extend and collapse when needed. The paper’s vertical layout gives it incredible strength, allowing it to easily take the weight of two people (up to 300 kilos, or 661 lbs) sleeping or sitting on it (the mattress helps distribute the pressure too). The bed’s foldable nature may give it the advantage of portability, but its foldable mattress allows it to also turn into a sofa and an ottoman stool when you need it. Just fold the base and mattress along and you’ve got yourself a simple, sturdy seating device, with or without a backrest!

zipline_loveseat_1

zipline_loveseat_2

Normally shape-shifting furniture sounds like something bachelors would have. A bed that’s also a couch? Bachelor’s dream come true! However, the Zipline Loveseat’s design makes it fit into any household. It exudes a certain finesse that’ll make it look great in any and every home! The Zipline comes in four separate parts that when put together, can be turned into either a bed, or a sofa, or even a divan. Separate elements can be used individually too! For example, the small units that you’re left with after turning Zipline into a sofa can be used as either footrests or really chic ottoman stools! You choose what furniture you want or need, and the Zipline Loveseat will shapeshift to fit your demands!

The Three Sixty bed by Savoir truly puts the extra in extravagant. As the name suggests, it rotates 360 degrees and is currently the most expensive bed on the market with a price tag of…I suggest you take a seat right now…$300,000. The Three Sixty is meant to shock and dazzle from every angle, literally. You can change your view with a simple touch on their app. It also has reading lights, USB slots, and power outlets weaved into its sides along with glowing LED lights at the bottom to give it a levitating illusion. The expensive tag comes at the cost of 300 hours of skilled labor and the state-of-the-art turntable from Bumat, a company that usually makes them for the Geneva Motor Show. To make it even more exotic, the cotton velvet used in the headboard was sourced from Dedar and the topper was made from rare natural fibers of a Mongolian yak.

slashbed_layout

slashbed

The Slash/Bed was designed to be so incredibly compact when shipped that its entire set of components fit into two boxes that are the same size-footprint as two large pizzas. Open the boxes and your entire bed sits within, ready to assemble. The Slash/Bed is designed in such a way that putting the bed is a one-person task and requires no power tools. The bed relies entirely on Japanese joineries, and the ‘Slash’ design allows each beam of the bed to be folded in half, but be strong when opened out, transferring minimal weight onto the hinge. In the places that use screws, the Slash/Bed relies on metal inserts, so the screws don’t puncture or damage the wood, making it easy to disassemble the bed too.

cuddle_bed_04

cuddle_bed_02

When we think of a bed providing us with the ultimate relaxation and comfort, we would normally connect this directly with the mattress, but what if the bed itself could contribute to this factor? Well, that’s the objective of the Cuddle bed, which features a flexible, cushioned headboard that’s packed full of functional features! Each side of the headboard can be pivoted by the user to create a sense of privacy and security that conventional beds are missing. This movement is reminiscent of the gentle human interaction that is hugging, or cuddling, adding an element of comfort to the design. The cushioned sideboard also removes the need for a bulky side table; the large pockets are perfect for storing smart devices and books in when the time comes to get some well-needed sleep!

ivation_ez_bed_1

The EZ-Bed uses a compressor and a pretty beautifully designed framework and layout to fit an entire twin-sized bed into a bag that’s good enough to fit in the boot of your car. Simply unzip the bed, connect the plug to a power source, and run the air compressor and the bed unfolds before your eyes, expanding to its full size in under two minutes. Durable, comfortable, and big enough for two adults, the EZ-Bed may have an aesthetic that’s more ‘NASA Mars Rover’ than ‘Quaint Apartment’, but it’s pretty ideal for those quick moments when guests need to spend the night over and you’re short of beds, or if you want to magically turn a spare room in your flat into an Airbnb homestay without shelling out money for a solid bed and upholstery. What’s more, the bed even compresses on its own back into its original space-saving shape when deflated.

Sleep better with these product designs to get a productivity filled morning: Part 2

A good night’s sleep is extremely vital for achieving maximum productivity the following day. Designed as a part of the Ford Interventions series, which uses automotive technology to remedy everyday problems, this is the Lane-Keeping Bed. As its name suggests, it prevents bed-space-hoggers from occupying more than half of the bed’s space. The bed uses pressure sensors to know when one person occupies more space than the other, and immediately (and silently) rolls/shifts the mattress in the opposite direction, making sure that the two partners occupy an equal amount of space on the bed

Designed as a pair of pretty massive earmuffs that also double up as a neck-support, the Sleepmuffs can be worn in bed or while seated, making them perfect at home or while traveling. Made with high-quality foam (among other materials), the Sleepmuffs aren’t just comfortable to wear, they do a pretty remarkable job of blocking sound too. With as much as -33 decibel attenuation, the Sleepmuffs are arguably better than a pair of earplugs, or even your passive noise-canceling headphones.

Nocturnal, designed by Alexander Braga, is an interactive sleeping aid that specifically aims to help insomnia sufferers. With user-defined technological and personalized features, this design solution makes restful sleep possible. Surrounding the bed is an OLED, a film of an organic compound, emitting light, which bridges digital solutions with the human experience. The OLED screen is the sleeping aid’s primary charm and uses rollable, flexible technology in order to envelop the top half of your body and project images from the depths of your most peaceful, relaxing imagination.

Designed by Hi-interiors, the HiBed is quite frankly the bed of my dreams. Equipped with a built-in 4K projector that can be synced with a series of devices to binge-watch movies/TV shows on a 70-inch retractable screen, as well as a  built-in surround sound system, it is the epitome of in-bed relaxation. The bed is connected to an app and monitors our sleep patterns and movements, adjusting the temperature according to our comfort.

Most of us scroll through our social media apps before bed and the blue light exposure keeps our brain alert even after we keep the phone down. Mudita Bell is a calming alarm clock that wants to replace the screen-scrolling so we can get rest according to our natural sleep cycles – a key in waking up rested and relaxed. It has an E-Ink screen which means you aren’t actually looking at a screen but at the ink that is programmed to move to create visuals, thus reducing your exposure to blue light.

Designed by Kunal Ghude, Turbo is a Smart Air Purifier, inspired by the mechanics of a turbocharger. The futuristic and innovative device purifies the air around you, allowing you to breathe in clean oxygen, and helping you sleep better. You will wake up refreshed!

The Gravity Weighted Cooling Blanket is created from a fabric that absorbs the moisture from your body, keeping you cool while you sleep at night. The blanket is filled with plastic poly-pellets, making you feel super comfy and cozy in your bed. This blanket helps you save up on a lot of electricity costs, as you don’t need to switch on the air conditioning, making it environment-friendly as well!

The EnergyPod Napping Chair by MetroNaps is my new favorite product design! This comfy chair is perfect for taking a quick power nap…especially while you’re at work! You can settle into the pod for a pre-programmed 20-minute nap. You can adjust the time if you wish to. The spherical cover gives you privacy, separating you from the world, while you peacefully snooze.

The Philips SmartSleep Anti-Snoring Band, debuted at the IFA Press-Conference this year, prompts you, through gentle vibrations, to sleep on your side. Strapped around your waist, the band has the ability to sense when you’re supine, or on your back, and coaxes you to sleep on your side by delivering soft vibrations that get you to adjust your position in your sleep without waking you up. The band optimizes patterns based on your sleep intensity to determine the best way to subconsciously alert you and machine learning even determines the most optimal time to give you the nudge.

This ultimate bed doubles up as a couch and a WFH desk fitted with all the smart tech!

I have never wanted to use my position at Yanko Design to review products in person before seeing this bed.

The sound system also features and SD card slot, an auxiliary port and a USB port. Another interesting detail about the Hariana bed is a password-protected safe box for you to store your most precious belongings – for me it would be my passport and snacks!

The Hariana Tech Smart Ultimate bed is something straight out of Spy Kids and I say that with utmost appreciation for both. The only thing I would add is a coffee maker so I can go from binge watching to office hours seamlessly.
