This wooden chair uses a geometric trick to draw you into its open embrace

We’ve seen quite a number of chair designs that revolve around wood, a material favored for its natural beauty and sustainability. Most of these involve very hard and solid types of wood like oak, exactly because they are both actually solid and give off the impression of stability. Of course, those aren’t the only types of wood that you can use for furniture, nor do chairs have to look mighty and grand all the time. Take this distinctive-looking chair, for example, one that is almost just “skin and bones,” so to speak. It evokes a sense of lightness and it is also quite lightweight, while still providing a stable seating platform whose very shape seems to invite you to sit and relax under the open skies.

Rattan wood is perhaps better known as a type of material that’s woven to create a more decorative surface or to wrap around different parts of a whole. While that’s definitely a good use for it, it isn’t the only use case, either. The rattan stem can also be used as the foundation and skeleton of a piece of furniture, which is what this rattan chair attempts to do. Thankfully, the flexible nature of the material made it easy to bend the solid length of wood into a circular form, something that’s less trivial to accomplish with hardwood.

Beyond the creative use of rattan for almost the entirety of the chair, Eclipse’s biggest pull is its unique and unconventional design. The base and seat itself are nothing but an open box with strips of rattan wrapped around the front and back, leaving the sides open for both viewing and potentially for storage. The most iconic parts, however, are the two vertical circles that arch over the seated person, a design that serves more than just an aesthetic purpose.

Visually, the circles frame the person seating inside, drawing attention to them. The rear circle is also smaller than the front, creating an almost conical shape that tries to draw you into the chair. The circles also make it seem like the open sky is reaching down to embrace whoever is sitting below. The open design, joined by sparse patches of rattan wrapping, provides a more peaceful and inviting atmosphere compared to a full cover that provides more shade but also overshadows the person.

The Eclipse was conceived as a sort of “thinking chair,” one that aims to inspire the mind into deeper thoughts with the open sky and wide areas as the backdrop. Almost ironically, this kind of chair probably wouldn’t survive too long outdoors given its wooden construction and very minimal protection from both sun and rain. It still has that welcoming and relaxing effect indoors, though, especially when used in open or large spaces. Regardless of where it’s placed, it will easily call attention to itself, despite barely having any meat on its body, so to speak.

Hence, this piece of furniture needs to be not only comfortable but ergonomic and aesthetic as well. And we’ve curated a collection of chair designs that meet all these criteria! From a wooden chair that transforms into a rocking chair or workdesk to a leaf-inspired outdoor chair/sunbed  – these innovative chair designs are not only a boon to your back and help you maintain a healthy posture, but are also super comfy to sink into and will perfectly match the interiors of your modern homes.

1. Peach Easy Chair

The visually intriguing Peach Easy Chair was created by Annabella Hevesi to introduce and experiment with a kind of mechanical joint. The unique chair features an innovative mechanical joint solution that allows the foam to be shaped in a completely new and refreshing manner.

Why is it noteworthy?

The joint enables the foam to be shaped without cutting or casting – the first method creates a lot of waste, and the second method is quite expensive. Instead, a new ‘tufting’ technique was employed to distort the foam and create the shell out of the chair.

What we like

  • Not only reduces waste but also offers a mechanical connection between the components, eliminating the need for glue

What we dislike

  • The chair offers a slouched posture, which may not be ergonomic for the user

2. The Tone Chair

At first glance, the Tone Chair grabs your attention for a variety of reasons, primarily because it is oh-so-simple in its form, and yet so solid in its character. The Tone Chair was the result of the exploration of a simple metallic tube and bending process on the part of Filipic.

Why is it noteworthy?

Four tubes, and and two pieces of sheet metal were used to build the chair. The two pieces of sheet metal were used to form the seat and the backrest, while the four metallic tubes were utilized to construct the legs of the chair.

What we like

  •  A smooth and linear furniture design whose various components effortlessly merge together
  • Features bright and loud yellow, which adds manifolds of character to the stark and minimal chair

What we dislike

  • The form of the chair can be considered too simple and stark for some
  • Doesn’t look comfortable to sit on for longer durations

3. Nice Chair

Designed by Ali Shoieb, the Nice chair is designed to be a ‘disassembled chair’.  Space-consuming furniture is the bane of tiny modern-day apartments with space constraints. Hence, Shoieb wanted to design a furniture piece that does not occupy too much space and can be assembled and disassembled with ease.

Why is it noteworthy?

The minimal wooden chair can function as an ordinary chair to sit on, or even a rocker that can be moved back and forth. The rounded bottom edges of the Nice chair allow it to rock back and forth, creating a harmonious lull that could guide anyone to fall asleep. On, the other end, you can slide in a tabletop between the ridges on the arms of the chair, transforming it into a convenient space to work in.

What we like

  • Multifunctional furniture design

What we dislike

  • There is no way to stop the chair from rocking while working

4. Vale Collection

London-based design firm LAYER designed the ‘Vale’ collection for US furniture brand KFI Studios. The Vale collection is a range of eco-friendly chairs and stool created from recycled PET bottles, and are a protest against the plastic waste that is drowning Earth’s oceans and landfills at an alarming rate.

Why is it noteworthy?

The Vale collection is LAYER and KFI Studio’s eco-friendly solution to this ever-growing issue of plastic waste. In a day and age, where almost 9 million tons of furniture are found in landfills, the Vale collection is a refreshing change and a fine specimen of sustainable furniture.

What we like

  • The elegant-looking chairs and stools feature shells and seats built from a tactile felt material. The tactile material is manufactured from recycled PET bottles, and it is eco-friendly and quite sturdy, durable, and easy to maintain

What we dislike

  • The aesthetics of the chairs and stool are a bit mundane. More details could have been added to them

5. The 6-alloy Chair

Conceptualized by SUNRIU Design, the 6-alloy chair doesn’t look like any of the regular or traditional chairs you see on the market, or anywhere around you. It looks as if a stool and a chair had a love child – resulting in the intriguing-looking 6-alloy chair.

Why is it noteworthy?

Built using aluminum and Piñatex (leather created from pineapple leaf), the 6-alloy chair features an aluminum body, that comprises of three tubes. The three tubes are subtly interlocked together, with two pieces of leather forming the seating section, and a nifty storage section beneath it (or a cute spot for your pet to nap in).

What we like

  • Functions as seating space for your pet and you
  • Made using eco-friendly elements

What we dislike

  • The leather at the bottom of the chair may not fare well to pets who are in the chewing phase.

6. The Conicent Chair

The Conicent Chair takes the simple and humble cone shape and transforms it into an impressive and unique piece of furniture. The chair features a cone with the front half chopped off, with an innovative dropped top that seems to be caving in on itself.

Why is it noteworthy?

The chair features a smaller inverted cone inside that serves as the main surface for sitting. Adding a cushion makes it a comfortable indoor chair, though leaving it bare makes it suitable for outdoor use – making it a versatile chair that can be utilized both indoors and outdoors.

What we like

  •  Made to be comfortable and ergonomic, regardless of your preferred sitting position, thanks to gentle slopes and curves in every direction

What we dislike

  • Space-consuming + bulky design
  • Not a real tangible product

7. The Orfo Lounge Chair & Sunbed

The Orfo lounge chair and sunbed is a unique, quirky, and eccentric-looking piece of furniture that was designed by Miray Özlem ER. The designer was inspired by Mother Nature and used this influence to design the chair.

Why is it noteworthy?

If you look at the chair closely, it may remind you of a leaf or an exotic-looking plant. The woven pattern of the chair and its dusky green color were characteristics that Miray picked up from nature.

What we like

Designed by Jiung Yun and Minji Kim, the Morph chair was created for ‘quiet contemplation.’ Our daily modern lives can be quite hectic and tiresome. And we need to take a break and simply relax once in a while. The Morph Chair is designed for those moments.

Why is it noteworthy?

The Morph chair was designed for moments of peace when we can take a break, and simply lounge about on it. It attempts to function as a calm space for users to organize their chaotic thoughts and worries and take down their stress a notch or two.

What we like

  • Has a storage section integrated beneath the seat, which can be used to store books and other miscellaneous items

What we dislike

  • Aesthetics can be dull and stark for some people

9. The Blu Dot Port Dining Chair

The Blu Dot Port Dining chair is a comfortable and stylish chair with a sculpted wood seat featuring elegant contours. The well-designed piece of furniture maintains a graceful aesthetic, while also managing to be functional and practical.

Why is it noteworthy?

The dining chair features a shapely and cozy bent plywood and back, which provides enhanced comfort during meal times. It has been equipped with a solid wood frame and legs, which is excellent for interacting with guests and spending time with family

Built using wood, the Loop Chair has a traditional and archetypical character accentuated with tricky and progressive details that lend an air of character to it.

2. Sado Chair

Designed by Martin Luu, the Sado Chair is an experiment in unconventional design, and it will remind you of a horizontal tree log or horseback, which supports a straddled seated position that encourages a healthy position. Johannes Steinbauer Office For Design created these 3D-printed seats that can be built without fabrics, springs, and foam, and they still manage to be comfortable and functional. The chairs use rigid prints instead of the usual racks from chairs. The different parts are easy to assemble and disassemble and once it reaches the end of life, you can dispose of the different parts separately and recycle them accordingly. 6. Tailor Armchair

Called the Tailor Armchair, this interesting and uniquely designed armchair also doubles up as a desk!

Why is it noteworthy?

If you want to use it as an armchair, you can simply rest and place your back on the raised panel or plank of plywood that is placed at the center of the chair. The raised panel is further supported by a vertical curved panel. These panels function as the back support, allowing you to comfortably sit back against the armchair. If you wish to use it as a desk, you can instead use the raised panel as a tabletop and fit your legs into the blank spaces created by the intersection of the raised panel with the vertical curved panel. So the same panels of plywood that characterize the design as an armchair also allow it to convert into a desk!

What we like

  • Doubles up as an armchair and a desk
  • Equipped with storage space
  • Clean and minimal aesthetics

What we dislike

  • It’s not a real product yet, still a concept!
  • Space-consuming + bulky design

7. The PINCH Chair

Designed by Medium2 Studio, the PINCH chair gives your traditional and typical plastic chair a fresh and transformative makeover. Plastic stackable chairs are seen almost everywhere these days, and the PINCH chair gives them a much-needed rejuvenation.

Why is it noteworthy?

The traditional plastic chair was given a new form factor with the PINCH chair. By simply pinching and pulling the material (plastic), the designers were able to give an otherwise old-school design a new and improved look. This gives PINCH a uniform form and a visual design language that is extremely intuitive and dynamic.

What we like

  • Gives the plastic chair a new look and form

What we dislike

  • Not a sustainable seating option

8. Loop Chair

Designed by Annabella Hevesi, the Loop Chair is the kind of straightforward and simple furniture piece that instantly makes you fall in love with it, because of how minimally and cleanly it is designed.

Why is it noteworthy?

Built using wood, the Loop Chair has a traditional and archetypical character accentuated with tricky and progressive details that lend an air of character to it.   • It’s still a concept!

9. The Nodding Chair

I love cozying up with a good old book; however, sitting in one position and reading for hours on end can be a curse for my back. Hence this unique product concept was created to function as the perfect chair for bookworms!

Why is it noteworthy?

While rocking chairs are good for relaxation, they’re not always good for floors and, if you’re like me, for our eyes and peace of mind. The designer thought of a new way to have a chair that can be comfortable and still let your body have its range of natural motion while reading, resting, or even writing (if you’re used to that). The Nodding Chair can be tilted forward and backward, letting you make smaller movements that won’t make you too nauseous.

What we like

  • Creates less pressure on the floor so you won’t get marks and scratches
  • Allows the chair to move with you as you occasionally change positions while reading

What we dislike

  • The seat itself doesn’t seem to be that comfortable as it’s just plain wood and there’s no cushion
  • Not everyone may consider the chair comfortable

10. The Hunter Chair

Classic furniture designs are classics for a reason, they’ve withstood the test of time, cementing their value and functionality as pieces that will never truly go out of style. One such design is the Hunter Chair by Torbjørn Afdal. Designed in 1960, the Hunter Chair is Afdal’s version of the “hunting chair,” a kind of seating that was quite popular during those times. And Eikund has brought the Hunter Chair to life once again!

Why is it noteworthy?

The Norwegian furniture brand decided to recreate and relaunch the Hunter Chair, an excellent specimen of classic Norwegian furniture. The Hunter Chair is considered a modern-day classic.

What we like

  • Features solid cast brass buckles, organically tanned leather, precise edge stitching details, and perfectly smooth transitions of wood
  • Gives a classic design a fresh makeover

What we dislike

Conical chair gives you a majestic seat whether indoors or outdoors

Chairs need to be stable and comfortable, but beyond these two critical requirements, everything else is pretty much fair game. From materials to forms, there is a lot of variation possible, which has given rise to a great number of chair designs, from the most minimalist to the most sophisticated. You don’t always have to go overboard, though, when trying to come up with a distinctive design for a memorable chair. This one, for example, starts out with a simple geometric shape that evolves into something with its own personality, almost resembling an exquisite yet subtle throne that you can sit on, whether relaxing in the castle that is your home or basking under the glory of the sun in your backyard.

It’s easy to underestimate the value that simple shapes can provide, especially when there’s so much attention paid to elaborate and complex forms, contours, and colors. Even minimalist designs sometimes pile on multiple elements, straddling the fine line that divides minimalism and everything else. There is, however, an elegant beauty to simpler forms that diverge little from their base geometries, such as the Conicent Chair concept that elevates a cone into a majestic piece of furniture.

The design takes a simple cone with its front half chopped off and then makes the top drop inside, almost like caving in on itself. This creates what looks like a smaller inverted cone inside that serves as the main surface for sitting. Adding a cushion makes it a comfortable indoor chair, though leaving it bare makes it suitable for outdoor use.

The semi-circle shape of the chair’s base gives it enough stability, but a hollow trapezoidal structure can be added underneath for support. This can be made from a different material or in a different color from the chair, such as finished wood, to give a bit of chromatic contrast. A better material has to be chosen if the Conicent chair will be made for outdoor use.

The chair’s wide base that gracefully tapers toward the top helps lead the viewer’s eyes to the one sitting on it, an effect that is widely used for giving focus to prominent people, like royals on a throne. Unlike a throne, however, the Conicent Chair is made to be comfortable and ergonomic, regardless of your preferred sitting position, thanks to gentle slopes and curves in every direction. With just a cone and, optionally, a trapezoid, this chair concept offers a simple yet elegant piece of furniture that will make you look like royalty and maybe even feel like it.

We spend the majority of our day sitting on chairs, whether we’re working in our home office, enjoying a meal, or simply sitting and reading a book for leisure! Hence, this piece of furniture needs to be not only comfortable but ergonomic, and aesthetic as well. And we’ve curated a collection of chair designs that meet all these criteria! From a minimalist wooden armchair that doubles up as a desk to an armchair inspired by the huge mooring ropes used for ships – these innovative chair designs are not only a boon to your back, and help you maintain a healthy posture, but are also super comfy to sink into, and will perfectly match the interiors of your modern homes.

1. The Flow Single Sofa

SUNRUI designed this rather minimal and chic-looking armchair as a part of the FLOW Collection. As the name of the collection hints, the armchair is called the Flow Single Sofa. If you look closely at the chair, it quite literally looks like a Queen’s Chair.

Why is it noteworthy?

The sofa has a rather bulky and space-consuming form, although its structure has been designed quite elegantly and smartly, which somehow downplays the stoicness of the sofa. What also imparts the single sofa with sophisticated air are its spiral armrests. The spiral armrests add an interesting and artistic element to the sofa, and also quite amusingly resemble the Ionic Order. The Ionic Order is one of the orders of classic architecture. It is defined by twin volutes or spiral scrolls, such as the ones we can see in the Flow Sofa.

What we like

  • Meets the needs of humans and pets alike
  • Creates a shared space, where the owner and cat, can spend some quality time together

What we dislike

  • It’s still a concept!
  • If your pet pees or poops inside the armrests, it could be difficult to clean up

2. The Knitty Chair

Designed by Slovenian designer Nika Zupanc, the Knitty Chair is a bulky and chonky armchair that takes inspiration from the large mooring ropes for ships.

Why is it noteworthy?

The huge armchair features a chunky basket-weave design that mimics a knotted rope. The chair has been upholstered in a knitted fabric that features a quilted diamond pattern and is available in 15 different colors.

What we like

  • A visually interesting armchair that has been layered with depths of personality and character

What we dislike

  • The Knitty Chair’s aesthetics aren’t for everyone, they’re quite bold, and won’t work for those who prefer a more simpler and minimal style

3. Sharing Joy

Rather aptly titled ‘Sharing Joy’, this award-winning chair comes with a side table for humans to place their books and cups of tea/coffee on, and a crawl space for cats to casually lounge in (complete with a suspended toy for them to play with).

Why is it noteworthy?

What I personally love about Sharing Joy is that it subscribes to a broader vision of what lounging is and who can ‘lounge’. Designed for humans and cats to cozy up in, the chair comes with a hollow, oblong backrest that’s perfectly sized for an adult cat (or a tiny dog) to crawl into and laze around in. Moreover, the idea of having the human and pet lounging together against each other sounds like absolute perfection. 10/10 will give you the happiness hormones.

What we like

  • The chair sports a minimalist aesthetic that fits in most contemporary homes

What we dislike

  • The little space reserved for your pet doesn’t look too comfy

4. Tailor Armchair

Designed by SUNRIU Design, what makes the Tailor armchair super interesting, and a rather unique design is that it can be used as an armchair and a desk.

Why is it noteworthy?

If you want to use it as an armchair, you can simply rest and place your back on the raised panel or plank of plywood that is placed at the center of the chair. The raised panel is further supported by a vertical curved panel. These panels function as the back support, allowing you to comfortably sit back against the armchair. If you wish to use it as a desk, you can instead use the raised panel as a tabletop, and fit your legs into the blank spaces created by the intersection of the raised panel with the vertical curved panel. So the same panels of plywood that characterize the design as an armchair, also allow it to convert into a desk!

What we like

  • Doubles up as an armchair and a desk
  • Equipped with storage space

What we dislike

  • It’s not a real product yet, still a concept!

5. The Nodding Chair

As someone who loves to read, and read for long periods of time, I know that wooden chairs are the least comfortable ones to sit on while finishing a good book. And I’ve also tried to read while on a regular rocking chair and that made me dizzy since the constant big movements are a bit too much for my poor eyes. But staying put in a chair can still be uncomfortable and you need some type of motion while you’re reading. This product concept seems to be the perfect one for bookworms like me.

Why is it noteworthy?

While rocking chairs are good for relaxation, they’re not always good for floors and if you’re like me, for our eyes and peace of mind. The designer thought of a new way to have a chair that can be comfortable and still let your body have its range of natural motion while reading, resting, or even writing (if you’re used to that). The Nodding Chair can be tilted forward and backward, letting you make smaller movements that won’t make you too nauseous.

What we like

  • Creates less pressure on the floor so you won’t get marks and scratches
  • Allows the chair to move with you as you occasionally change positions while reading

What we dislike

  • The seat itself doesn’t seem to be that comfortable as it’s just plain wood and there’s no cushion

Colorful flat-packed chairs aim to achieve full sustainability – from material choices to supply chain

And a super sustainable chair design that recently impressed me is the OTO chair by Alessandro Stabile and Martinelli Venezia.

Designed by Alessandro Stabile and Martinelli Venezia for the Italian furniture brand One to One, the OTO chair is intended to be a “manifesto for circular design”. One to One is a brand that heavily focuses on sustainability, and the OTO chair is a recycled plastic chair that aims to achieve a goal of full sustainability, in both material choices, and the supply chain as a whole.

“From the beginning, we realized that using recycled materials was not enough. We had to think about something that would systematize the entire sustainable supply chain, from production to logistics, distribution, and assembly, to stimulate the public with a product capable of activating a new awareness,” said Stabile and Venezia. As a result of this, the OTO chair is built using a single mold, sold online, and delivered in a flat-packed form.

The OTO chair has a clean, minimal, and simple form, and is available in a variety of fun colors – onyx, fog, mustard, eucalyptus, coral, and forest. You can pick a color that best matches your personality and interior decor style! While creating and making OTO, One to One partnered up with Ogyre which runs the Fishing for Litter Platform. This platform allows fishermen to contribute to collecting marine waste for reuse. The production of each OTO chair removes almost 500 grams of plastic from the sea, according to the brand. It truly has sustainability incorporated in its core, and approaches sustainability as a whole, trying to integrate it into every step of the process – whether it’s designing, manufacturing, or even selling.

This Instagrammer’s collection of Hype Chairs sneakerizes classic furniture designs to awe us

Marco Rambaldi is a dreamer and for a ‘dreamer, reality is boring!’ No wonder he has employed AI and Photoshop skills to relieve his boredom and conjure up Hype Chairs that dress as Nike sneakers.

While the Instagrammer, who goes by the name of MarkVonRama, has sneakerheads drooling over his imagined versions of chairs; his handle comes with a disclaimer ‘nothing real and nothing for sale.’ This can be information for those who don’t lose sanity in awe; but the awed only realize the obvious after bombarding the comment section with needy blabber.

The artist and designer’s chair designs include Nike makeover of furniture pieces from Herman Miller and Miles van der Rohe. In addition to the sneaker-themed chairs, he previously shared sneaker-themed AI houses on the social media platform, which also garnered ample attraction.

MarkVonRama’s latest creation reimagines the Eames Lounge and Ottoman as Air Jordan 1 Retro High “Chicago” and the Eames Molded Shell Rocking chair as the Ambush Air Force 1. Since the Hype Chairs are not meant for lounging and are only for the eyes; the creative liberty has Jump man logo, fabric tags, and Swooshes all protruding from the sides of these furniture pieces.

There are eight chairs in the collection some of which – other than the AJ 1 and AF 1 – are based on designs from Mies van der Rohe and Vitra. These have armrests featuring Swooshes and lace eyelets from Air Jordan 4, adding to the sneaker-inspired aesthetic.
